Baby the Rain Must Fall (1965)
Mixed feelings
I'm torn over this film. It was great to see a Steve McQueen film on TV other than "The Great Escape", or "Nevada Smith" and for 90% of the film he is his usual great self - but!
Steve was about 35 years old but the characterisation of Henry suggests a much younger man, maybe early 20's.
The girl portraying his daughter, at 8 years old, would also have been better as a babe in arms, or toddler.
I feel that they could have done more to show how the young Henry had been treated by the old lady to fully explain his obvious fear of her other than a few words spoken by another person.
Unfortunately, despite Steve doing a great job for most of the film, some scenes were horrendously poor! The fight outside the bar, oh dear! Also the fight at the cemetery!
One last criticism - definitely the wrong voice to dub for Steve singing!
Having said all that, on the whole, I enjoyed seeing Steve in the role.
I'd definitely say to watch it, it's good to see a less macho Steve!
White Boy Rick (2018)
Oh dear!
If you're a young dude from the cities of America, you might get this. As middle aged viewers in the UK, it was slow, dark and the language used by the characters so far from "normal" English that, coupled with swearing just about every word, we struggled to actually understand what was going on! We watch a lot of films, this one is on Prime, and from time to time we have to double check the accents used to make sure we've got it right, but we have given up on this one!!
I'm sure it is an interesting story but please, tone down the street talk! How people are expected to easily understand a sub-language, such as used in this film, is unfathomable. Please, American producers, you want your film to be successful worldwide, make them more accessible to the millions who don't speak this sub language!
The War Below (2021)
Intriguing true story!
My husband loves watching war films, especially when they portray little known, amazing stories.
This is one of those, he knew that it actually happened but to see it re-enacted was so interesting, even for me.
Don't take any notice of the negative reviews, miners have a very specific skill, that's why mining was a protected profession.
The Royal Engineers would have been employed elsewhere, doing what they did best, built bridges, re-built roads, they weren't there for digging.
It was interesting to see the difference between the trained soldiers and the miners, both had integrity and bravery but in different ways!
If you enjoy seeing true stories of real people who made valuable contributions to, in this case, winning WWI, you'll enjoy this!
USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage (2016)
Better than expected
We weren't sure whether to watch this or not because of the bad reviews. However, although the quality of the special effects may not be up to current standards, the story is emotive enough to make you ignore them. That this is based upon a real event makes it well worth watching. We would recommend it.
The Mauritanian (2021)
How can it happen?
Amazing, powerful, emotive, scary.
How a superpower can ignore the law, torture people and detain them for years without even being accused of a crime, is outrageous! The country should be censured at the highest degree!
Lions for Lambs (2007)
Visually, great: thought provoking
Visually this is a great film, the performances are strong, especially from Redford, Cruise and Streep, as you'd expect of course.
The dialog between Redford and Garfield, and between Cruise and Streep, is intense and particularly interesting if you're into politics.
However, the sound is awful!! You can hear Redford putting his jacket on, a noise much like the sound the soldiers were hearing, was constantly there, throughout the Redford scene!! I'm glad I didn't watch it in a cinema, the sound could have pushed me out!!
Trick (2019)
Great story!
The story was good, we were kept on the edge of our seats till the end.
But, why do people in horror films have to be SO thick??
Not one police officer had so much as a stab vest, never mind full body armour!!
In Like Flynn (2018)
Not In Like Flynn
With seemingly no attempt to find an actor to look, or sound, like Errol Flynn, this is a film of four guys having fights and fun on a boat!
It's ok, as long as you're not expecting to see an Errol Flynn based film!
