Miss by a mile
27 January 2011
I bet this looked so good on paper, lets have a show where some successful British SitCom writers go to LA and see how they cope with the pressures of studio life. We'll have some really good British actors, Steve and Tamsin were great in Green Wing, and Matt, what can we say, everybody's favourite Friend.

But.. just how funny is it that the studio boss says he loves the show but he hasn't seen it. The guard won't let them through the gate to their house. Everyone is so insincere.

It brings to mind the "Pilot" shows from Sienfeld, only the writers for that show remembered to put some jokes in. We can't identify with the characters, not being BAFTA winning writers or comedy superstars, so they have to be really well written. Sadly they are not. Such a wicked waste of the talent available.

Fun for the children, maybe not so good for adults
27 January 2011
The strain is beginning to show on Hollywood as the publics insatiable appetite for films starts to take its toll. My children like to go to the cinema about once a week, and its a miracle that there are almost enough films for us not to have to see them twice. My heart sinks sometimes when I see the forthcoming attractions.

I was dreading taking my son to this shameless vehicle for Jack Black, the trailers made it look dire, but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. We all know the Gulliver story, big guy, little people, and the love story was a bit of a yawn, but there were some laughs along the way, the supporting cast was excellent and somehow it skips along to the end without losing pace. Yes the plot was trite, the editing poor and there could have been more jokes. But, as my son pointed out, it was very clever how they made Gulliver big and the little people, well... small. He loved it!

Not the best film I've ever seen, but entertaining enough in its way. I just hope I don't have to go and see it again.

Funny stab at reality shows
13 January 2011
Ashamed to say this but this show is probably only really funny if you've seen the 'fly on the wall' shows that they parody. The characters are pitch perfect send-ups of the hapless 'stars' of the airport based programs.

Less cruel than Little Britain, like many character based comedies, such as The Fast Show, this just gets funnier and funnier. David Walliams and Matt Lucas are top notch comedy actors, in some ways much too good for such light entertainment as this. Thank goodness they've dropped the catch phrases!

The format probably won't last for more than a series but enjoy it will its here.
