It wants to be Hollywood Squares but this is nowhere close. Hollywood Squares actually had sharp writing.
First of all, Hollywood Squares would ask questions that were somewhat at home on a game show, right? On 'Funny You Should Ask', the questions are so bad. Most questions are a reference to some super obscure event or person, clearly only conceived as a way to be a transparent setup to some joke, but even so, the 'jokes' are just terrible. What's worse than a dud of a joke that ALSO needed a strained premise to set it up?
Another difference is that with Hollywood Squares, it was a big time network show, so the celebs were cranked up to be there and really were on their game. Funny You Should Ask on the other hand is going head-to-head with infomercials. The celebs on Funny You Should Ask... not that they don't put in a polite effort to fake it, but they're clearly not excited to be a part of this. I'm not blaming Funny You Should Ask for not being a network show, but, maybe it would be better to feature up-and-coming comics/actors, rather than people who used to be big stars and are now slumming it?
