Rick and Morty: Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion (2021)
This season is soo hit or miss
It's really interesting to see last week's episode, which was quite over the top in a bad way, getting better ratings than this episode, which is easily one of the best episodes of this season.
One thing I notice this season is, the ideas and tropes for the episodes are becoming the main focus of the story, instead of the main characters and their adventures. Which is probably the reason why this season is so inconsistent in terms of episode quality.
Love, Death & Robots: Fish Night (2019)
Come on guys
I have been waiting for the reveal that the young guy was an imagination of the old salesman, representing his youth. Maybe that was the underlining story here but the execution, especially the ending leaves too much to be desired.
With all that setup and amazing visuals, this could have been metaphorically brilliant. What a wasted opportunity.
Love, Death & Robots: Sucker of Souls (2019)
By far the weakest episode of LDR
I really don't understand how this story made it to the show. Animation was nothing special, characters are more like stereotypical caricatures, ending was beyond terrible. Twilight was a better vampire story in my opinion.
Love, Death & Robots: Beyond the Aquila Rift (2019)
Simply breathtaking
I think others already highlighted everything that makes this episode a true masterpiece, absolutely the best short I've ever seen in my life by far. If you are reading this review to make a decision, just go ahead and watch it at this very moment.
I already watched it 5-6 times and will probably rewatch it many more times in future. It piqued my curiosity so much so that I found the short story by Alastair Reynolds and read it the same day to get a better understanding of the story. He also has another story, Zima Blue, adapted as a LDR episode and two are the highest rated episodes, a testament to the author's genius.
The book version is slightly different and leaves no mystery about what's going on but I also love how the show ending is more open-ended, it definitely does justice to the original source material. I recommend reading the story or at least listening to the audiobook version that's available online.
Love, Death & Robots: Blindspot (2019)
Don't take it too seriously guys
Although not as creative or cerebral like the other LDR episodes, it was still a lot of fun to watch this episode. Animation and action sequences are top notch, I loved the character design. The theme reminds me of 'Biker Mice from Mars', one of my childhood favorites!
Not every story needs to have a groundbreaking message or sociopolitical analysis, this episode is supposed to be an action-packed saturday-morning cartoon for adults and it does its job damn well. So much so that I would definitely watch a series based on this cute cyborg team.
And it does have a twist at the end for bonus points.
