Victoria's Secret: The Tour '23 (2023)
A journey into the artists' soul
Genuinely enjoyed this detour into the lives and motivations of the international designers. Great homage to seasoned models along with an introduction of new faces. Editing / stitching, natural landscapes and music were spectacular additions to the story. The brand is undergoing an uneasy transformation, and I didn't find the stories too pushed or cheesy. I thought that the film did a good job balancing its notorious fashion show -- albeit on a runway free of a visible audience -- with the stories, and didn't overdo the inclusivity part (that would have made it banal and cliche). I would have liked to have seen it nominated for it's novelty and artistic production. It was bold and different.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Matrix fan worthy
This has to be one of Tom Cruise's recent toppers, and that alone says a lot. The entire time, there is never a dull moment or lack of suspense, yet we witness the key characters grow and develop a relationship in training and the battlefield. There is a touch of sci-fi fantasy coupled with war and a bit of romance necessary for the viewer empathy, yet just enough and not over the top. There are a few surprises, and certainly the viewer is never sure whether our main character will make it but rooting for him each time. Arguably we can tell when the final battle takes everything he can give it and there's not another reset to save him. There's equally a subtext of humor that allows us to see imperfections that are more likely for an amateur recruit, particularly in the beginning.
There is a paradox at the end with the time reset. If our hero's blood been transfused with the alien enemy's, which ultimately causes the reset, wouldn't that logically have irradiated him when he destroyed the alien?
