'Dont believe the Hype'
6 September 2002
I am tired of reading reviews of this film with the words 'oh dear the potential'' or some rubbish like that. I mean have you ever thought that maybe some of us did not want a brain dead Summer Blockbuster with 'franchise potential' mass destruction Id4 type movie and would prefer a well made ,well acted character based film instead? Yes, you may blame the Posters, the Trailers and the hype that precedented this movie I think they actually did intend to dupe you into thinking it would be a sort of Apocalypse Now with Dragons and stuff ,but there are people like myself who were pleasantly surprised that it was not, OK it was'nt the best movie ever made but it was certainly the best dragon movie I've seen. With good performances from all involved, A grown up Christian Bale and the underrated Matthew McConaughey, his character Van Zan is one of the baddest mofo's in film for a long time. So take my advice people 'dont believe the hype'.

Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001 TV Movie)
6/10
actually quite good
17 May 2002
Robert Townsend for me was not the ideal choice to make this, nor would I have used Beyonce Knowles as my first choice to play the lead Carmen Jones in this updated version of Bizet's classic opera 'Carmen'.

In the films defence I will say the music was great, and she may not act that well but Beyonce can sing people and she looks hot. Remixing some of the original Carmen score worked really well and Mekhi Phiffer was as always very good. On Mos Def I will say he is a peculiar guy, sometimes it seems he is acting real good, all laid back and sometimes it seems as if he is heavily stoned and cannot remember his lines!

Overall the concept of remaking Carmen into this MTV hip hopera was a very good idea and I think it worked well, given most of the cast were non actors.

A Truly brilliant film. Until I had seen the film in its entirety I had always heard others talk of the brilliance of these films but I myself had only seen bits over the years. I considered myself somewhat of a film buff until I read somewhere that 'you know nothing until you have seen Satyajit Rai' how true that was , I found myself falling in love with this masterpiece of cinema.

Khalnayak (1993)
he is the villain!
28 January 2002
Sunjay Dutt is no great actor, infact he is as wooden as they come. A limited actor, Sunjay is often cast as the heavy or underworld kingpin, his role in Khalnayak was billed as the ultimate villain and he managed to portray the title role brilliantly.

Subash Ghai the self proclaimed 'showman' is no great director, his films are always hyped to death and full of hits and missfires, creating just as much commotion when his films flop as when they are hits. Khalnayak however proved to be a massive hit. I must say Ghai has delivered and how!

This is Bollywood masala at its best and it also has a message. Sunjay Dutt plays a renowned terrorist on the run, how he and others like him came to be terrorist's against their own country is told throughout the film in flashbacks. In an ironic twist of fate prior to the release of the movie, the films star Sunjay Dutt was arrested and jailed in real life for terrorism related charges this along with the controversy caused by one of the songs in the film made this one of the most anticipated movies ever made in India.

The film proved to be worth all it's pre release hype and publicity intentional or otherwise with a sensational performance from it's leading lady Madhuri Dixit, an excellent soundtrack and the ever reliable Jackie Shroff this was bound to be hit.

monster, monster

Like most of the reviewers here I saw this when I was a child, and I remember having an excellent time watching this over and over. In my opinion, though it may not of had the budget or the flare of The Goonies, Monster Squad was just as good if not better.

Excellent

This is a remake of Shankar's own south film Madhalvan in Hindi. The south Whizz kid director has made an awesome spectacle of a film with Nayak.

It is a definite must see. Rahman's music is superb, 'shaka laka baby!' to say the least. This film contains superior special effects and CGI for it's time, unlike others who have no sense of using CGI effectively and non garishly, Shankar has created beautiful sequences for the songs. The cinematography is breathtaking, a joy to the eye. The South influence is very imminent, that is what makes this film so good along with a bravura performance from Anil Kapoor and the sensuous Rani Mukerjee although underused only adds to the films beauty.
