Intelligent Clouseau????
24 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Being a fan of the original series, I had a hard time watching this movie. However, change all the character names and locations, and you actually get a pretty funny movie, that the only thing in common between it and the original movie series is that Clouseau is a klutz! Other than that, this version of the character is very intelligent and observant. That's how he ultimately solves the case. Things no one else would have noticed he did. This character understood Chinese clearly while having you think it all went over his head earlier in the movie. This is Steve Martin's interpretation. This is NOT him even attempting to be Peter Sellers, and thank goodness for that. In Fact, that probably saves this movie from being really bad.

If you are able to put the old series behind you, give this a try, but remember that this is NOT the same character you grew to love and laugh at.

Some nice memories, but fails to be a serious countdown IMHO
24 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, these were 101 nice moments. However, any list that fails to mention John Belushi performing as Joe Cocker WITH Joe Cocker on stage just isn't serious about finding the greatest and most memorable moments in SNL history. That moment isn't just a great SNL moment, it's one of TV's GREATEST MOMENTS of ALL TIME! Belushi's imitation of Joe Cocker is SO PERFECT, IT'S UNBELIEVABLE! Seeing them side by side just proves it! Heck, I'd even put John's spin on "Get by with a little help from my friends" above over 2/3rds of the list! I'm sure not mentioning Will Ferrell in a patriotic thong would not have been missed if replaced by this moment.

And Wayne's World #1???!!! Sure, it's a great sketch worthy of the top 10, but if I had to pick a skit turned movie as #1, it'd be the Blues Brothers by far, not because they were famous in their time, but they re-popularized a whole subculture of music that was dying out! And that didn't even make the top 10 (it was #11), but the Cowbell sketch AND Bradys vs. Partridges did? Ewwww!

My Top 10? 1) Joe Cocker meets John Belushi (MISSING!) 2) Rudy after 9/11 (#2 on old list) 3) The Blues Brothers (#11) 4) Wayne's World (#1) 5) Eddie Murphy doing the Cannon Commercial as Stevie Wonder (Come on! it's classic when he takes the lens cap off for Joe Piscipo! This replaces old #7 - Stevie and Frank) 6) Channukah Song (#8) 7) The Church Lady (#12) 8) Chris Farley vs. Patrick Swayze for Chippendales (#9) 9) Anytime someone "Crashed" a party (Streisand, Pesci and DeNiro, Arnold, Reno, Etc....) (#6, #88, #57, and #92) 10) Steve Martin and Gilda Radner dance (#82) Hon Mention- Shiller's Reel - "Don't look back in Anger" (#62), "Da Bears" (#75), "White Like Me"(#41), and Emily Latella - "Nevermind. (Missing!).

No Neck Joe (1998)

There's more than 5 episodes
16 May 2005
I saw the original set of shorts at the Spike & Mike festival in the village of NYC. The first episode left everyone stunned in silence and confusion. by the 4th or 5th, everyone in the theater was shouting "NO NECK JOE" when the vignette would come on, and the laughter was nonstop. By the end, everyone was disappointed that there were no more. Craig McCracken has since produced a few more episodes.

Currently, there are 2 DVD's and 2 videos each with a subset of the episodes (4 or 5 each), but with some overlap between them. It's a real pain having to spend $15 on a DVD just to get the one or 2 new episodes on a release. I really wish they would release the whole series on one DVD.

Honestly, you'll scratch your head at the first episode, but love it by the end. It grows on you.

The Yule Log (1966 TV Movie)
A bit of NY History
19 October 2004
Wow. I can't believe no one has commented on this program.

For those who don't know, the show is a video loop of a log burning in a fireplace while holiday music plays in the background. In the early days, there was an FM stereo simulcast as well. Today, with stereo and dolby broadcasts the norm, it's not needed. However, it's still history.

Honestly, it's a corny program.

Honestly, it's a great memory and a part of my life.

We were fortunate enough to have a fireplace most years while I was growing up. However, we would still have the Yule Log on while we opened presents, even with our own "Yule Log" in the house. It was a nice reminder of the good fortune we did have and we did give thanks for it. It left the airwaves in 1989, and I left the area in 2000. I have just learned it is back on the air in NYC, and I couldn't be happier for everyone there. It's not action, it's not a story. It's a program for a time to have families be families together. May it grace the airwaves for generations to come... even if it's corny. :-)

Great movie, HORRIFIC EDITING
29 January 2004
I heard great things about this movie before seeing it. I was looking forward to a classic telling of a real story. It was there, but seriously marred.

The editing is the worst thing I have seen in years on a movie that is considered classic, let alone Oscar-worthy!

Now, the story was well told, and the acting, cinematography and directing was great, but watching it was like watching a classic movie that someone took an axe to just to shorten it for the theaters. I felt that the transitions were inconsistent. Sometimes they were smooth, and others they were so abrupt, it left my head spinning wondering how we got to the next scene.

I really hope that there is another more complete cut of the movie with much better transitions.

As much as I love everything else about the movie, I have a hard time recommending it because of the sloppy edit job. It really detracted from my enjoyment of the film. As a result, I just don't see this movie as being as great as everyone else.

This is... umm.... interesting....
5 November 2003
Words can scarcely describe this movie. Loaded with ridiculous stereotypes, a silly plot, and poor music, this movie lacks in just about every category.

Don't be fooled by the IMDB credits. This is not a Michael Dorn movie. He's a secondary character in the grand scheme.

Also listed in the Credit's is an actor named "Prince" - which makes me wonder if it's the same artist formerly known as.... Then again, I'm not sure this movie is worth watching just for that.

Big summary... bunch of teams... one has kidneys... one has $35,000.... one has an "Illegal Substance".... and one has $350,000. Add some confusion and mixups as to who needs to meet who, revenge on being taken, and such, and you end up with this mess of a movie.

Given a choice, I'd pass on this movie.

8 Simple Rules (2002–2005)
Let's Give the show a chance!
4 November 2003
I'm sorry, but I have to speak up here.

I think this talk about "John Ritter is gone, the show is going to die!" is very premature.

There is still Katy Sagal who is a wonderful comic actress in her own right, as well as a now established acting family at the show. I think before we start crying the death of the series, we should give the show a few weeks to pick up the pieces and see where they go from here.

The next few weeks will be the toughest for the series. Once they get past those, the show will then take it's new stride. At that time, if we want to sing the death song for the series, so be it, but I don't want to proclaim it yet.

It will never be the same series it was, but that doesn't mean it can't be as good. Who knows... the best may be yet to come.

Unbelievable (and I don't mean that in a good way)
1 November 2003
OK. I have seen some movies where the setup is so predictable, but this movie was just rediculous. Father (Stallone) gets custody of son when wife dies. He's a trucker and needs a new truck to support the family as an independent trucker. What does he do? Enter the dark and underhanded world of the World Arm Wrestling Championship. The prize, money and a New Truck.

Yeah, there's also the plot about gaining the son's respect, but IMHO it was treated more as a subplot than winning the truck. That's where the movie failed. I mean, not all arm wrestlers are truckers, and I think its kind of presumptuous to have a truck as a prize. Forget having the blasted truck as a prize. It just becomes so obvious a plot device that it's disgusts me. Of course the baddies don't want Stallone to get the truck. I mean, come on!

You want to see the clash of blue collar dad and white collar kid, there are far better movies out there. However, if you love bad movies, well, you may give this a turn because there's a lot to make fun of here.

It's biggest crime was it came AFTER La Vita E Bella
30 October 2003
I heard a lot of critics complain about this movie. I absolutely liked this film. However, it had 2 major failings:

1) It was a remake of a East German classic that was award-worthy, and had a high standard to the art film critics.

2) A Beautiful Life (La vita E Bella) had won best picture accolades 1 year earlier, and the stories have many similarities.

Neither of these are the fault of the movie. They were just 2 insurmountable odds it had to fight. For that reason, the movie failed miserably.

However, it really is a good movie. I can't speak for the original version, but I can say that while this movie was good, it's just not great.

Robin Williams does a great job as the reluctant "hero" and the supporting cast was solid. When Robin is controlled in his performance, he can really shine and this definitely shows you what is to come from him in the near future for dramatic roles. There is still some humor, but it's directed and not totally off the wall.

If you are interested in this era of history, I would recommend this movie.

Good, but not extraordinary
12 July 2003
I find it comical (no pun intended) when people complain that fictional characters are not portrayed "realisticly". But enough joking

I had high hopes for this movie, but while I did like it, it fell far short of my hopes. Rather than rehash the story, I will just hit the highlights.

The Action was great, but the problem is it rarely stays on a shot long enough for you to see anything - especially with Nemo. What glimpses you see are terrific, but it's not enough to really enjoy or appreciate it.

Also, I felt like they put all their character development into one basket. It felt like a giant pause in the movie when you begin to learn about the characters. I wish there was some action inserts to keep things feel like they were moving.

While many feel the need to criticize certain unbelievable elements in the movie, I must comment "It's a fantasy! That's the point!". Who cares whether Nemo's sub should fit in the canal's of Venice. This isn't necessarily our world, remember?

In spite of my criticism, I did enjoy the movie a lot. There was a lot of good action and plot twists in the story. Perhaps character modifications were made to enhance the story (i.e. Dorian Gray, Mina Harker), but just accept them as "alternate versions" that the original novels are based on, and you will enjoy it more.

HUGE LETDOWN
3 July 2003
I need to be very careful not to give away anything, but I will state what I feel the major failings are:

1) From Edge of Realism to Comic Book. The thing I loved about the first 2 movies was even though much of it was unbelievable, there was quite a bit of tension and realism to the characters and chases. The problem was that T2 pushed the limits. They decided to go farther, and it just became rediculous. Most of the chases I found myself laughable they were so silly.

2) Too Many rules changed. If you watch T1 and T2 before T3, you will see exactly what I mean by the way the T-101 acted, especially, since it's not supposed to be the same as from the prior movie(s).

3) The theme changed. I feel like the story was going one way in the first 2 movies, and they completely changed their minds as to what to do.

Now, I don't want to say the story was without merit and the ending wasn't good, but it was executed and designed POORLY. It feels more like "let's revive the Terminator movie just to make it" rather than "now, how do we pull it all together?".

I think perhaps another 6 months to 1 year to work on the storyboarding and scripting was needed to make this a really good movie, because if this was the first movie, there would NEVER EVER EVER been even a snowflake's chance in hell on the hottest day of the year while sitting in an over set to 5,000,000 F all day for a sequel, let alone anyone caring about it.

James Cameron, WHY DID YOU LET THEM DO THIS TO YOUR MOVIE???!!!!! I DON'T CARE IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO DO IT, YOU SHOULD OF DONE SOMETHING TO HAVE SAVED THIS MOVIE FROM WHAT HAPPENED!

Cute Family Movie
18 May 2003
This George Pal classic is a nice story for the family. It's a definite morality play, but with a fun comical twist. Rupert (the "animated" squirrel) ends up being a catalyst to set the fun in motion for everyone involved, though nobody really knows.

Jimmie Durante is ok in this film. This is not his best. Don't expect a lot, but do expect some fun. I hope families could try to get together and enjoy this forgotten holiday classic (as it should of been remembered).

Both Great and Horrid at the same time.
7 April 2003
Wow. I don't think I have ever been so torn as I have been watching "Merlin The Return". Rik Mayall, Adrian Paul, and so many others put in absolutely wonderful performances.

However, there were 2 MAJOR points that made this utterly disasterous.

1) The American Kid. There are some scenes that's he's good in. Most, he is just... BAD to be kind.

2) The "Modern Day" characters about town. The main ones they focused on (including the kids) seemed too accepting of Merlin and his appearing. Someone could of said "he appeared out of nowhere", and someone else laugh it off. If perhaps it was established better that Merlin was known as "the town nutter" (a little extra dialog could of killed that one) and only one person believed he was really Merlin (say the girl or her mother), then there could be a better believability. Also, everyone seemed to be a bit nonchalant when Merlin uses his magic and then Mordred comes through the gateway the first time.

Yet through the holes, lies a pretty darn good story for the most part, and some solid acting and swordplay. Really a fun movie.

I gave it 5 out of 10, because of the distractions, but it's still a very fun movie, though better for kids than adults (and that could of easily been fixed).

Acropolis Now (1989–1992)
Ethnic Comedy Aussie Style!
19 February 2003
It's pretty unusual to find an American like myself who goes out of his way to find new and unique programs from around the world, and for me I have struck gold! Acropolis Now is everything right about an ethnic comedy that America has mostly forgotten until "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

For those who haven't seen it, it's about Jim, a young "Greek-Australian" (or Wog, as ethnics in Aussie are known as) who is given his father's restauraunt to run while he returns to Greece. Of course, he has grand ideas, but little common sense. He worries more about getting the pretty girls than anything.

There are many other characters including Mimo (a fast-talking Greek), Effie (Jim's high-haired cousin), Effie's "friend of the season" (a wog wannabe who usually fancies Jim, but Jim can't stand), Rick (the sensible yet slightly wogish businessman who helps his friend Jim keep things under control at the restaurant), and Liz, the primary "non-wog" of the bunch.

The comedy is broad and funny, and can easily be appreciated by anyone. What holds this show together is the characters. They may be crazy, but even so they come off as believable, a major strength. Good News is that the DVD's available are Region 0! If your DVD player can convert PAL to NTSC, you can get this show to watch! I recommend it!

A Very real story
2 January 2003
This has to be the most real war story I have seen... ever. I found Black Hawk Down laughable, Windtalkers sad, but this... wow.

This is an excellent film that tells the true tale from the biography of Lt. Col. Hal Morris. It shows the horrors that the families go through, as well as the men. It even shows how the "enemy" are people too.

I would like to make a personal editorial here, since I feel a great wrong has been posted about this movie by some people here... To all the people calling this flag waving propaganda, you obviously didn't watch the movie, hence I feel your votes should be removed for this film. If anything, it showed the horrors of war, how our men suffered for what was believed to be a noble mission, and how in spite of terrible odds they overcame, and the promise that "No one will be left behind" was kept. I know people who were there. They ended up having nightmares because it hit so close to home. This was REAL. If it were propaganda, everyone would get home and we would all be happy. You want to talk Propaganda, watch almost any John Wayne movie, or even Patton. This was not. Men died. Good Men. Family men - on both sides. Yes, the only way we survived that battle was superior technology, but it was the only reason. They were dropped into an ambush, yet they survived. Lt. Col. Morris didn't come back proud of what he did, he was just happy the mission was accomplished and they survived. Yet, he was hurt badly by every wasted life. Propaganda? You totally missed the point! Is propaganda showing how we killed our own men because of our mistakes? Lies? Tell me, were you there? I didn't think so. Unless you were there, stop with the misinformation. Your the ones spreading propaganda and lies, not the film! If you want to get picky, then I will cover one more thing. Was there some fictionalizing? Of course! they had to squeeze in over 40 characters into a few leads! Lots of stuff had to be cut, so things were glossed over and cut. I'm not saying it's perfect in character detail, but the overall story was left in tact. This was not a Hollywood story even with the changes. The plot did not deceive. That battle was as real as a recreation could be. Even Lt. Col. Hal Morris, who is retired and was there, says so. Even my ex-boss and a couple other friends, who were either at that battle or at Nam, said so. If anyone has a right to point out lies, it's our ignored and abused Nam veterans.

My apologies to everyone else for that rant.

It was ok, but I was Disappointed
14 December 2002
This looked like a very interesting and good movie. However, I felt somewhat let down. It wasn't as good as I thought it could of been. I think more could of been done to express the internal conflicts that were going on. I didn't feel the relationships developed well as expressed in the movie. The story was there. Everything was there to make it a phenomenal movie. I just feel the execution to put it on the screen fell far short of the potential.

Possibly the only Disney animated feature I HATE
14 December 2002
This movie, IMHO, is AWFUL! I have been a huge Disney animation fan. I'm a huge Jazz and R&B fan (and in fact, love all music styles). I generally like how Disney tells a story. This fails in all 3 counts. The music is either dull or totally annoying. The Animation is what I can best describe as "experimental New wave", and is visually annoying (Pokemon has better animation). Lastly, the story is totally destroyed. Not one real toe-tapper you could walk away from the movie singing.

I have been converting all of my Disney animated videos to DVD as they have come out. All videos, but one, and I'm thinking of dumping it anyway.

Lame - as in Search for Spock Lame
19 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
POSSIBLE SPOILERS, not that anyone should care..... it's so LAME.

As far as sequels go, this movie may just be the death nail for MIB. I am a huge fan, but the story was so contrived and LAME when it came to bringing Tommy Lee Jones back in. I would of been happier to see him not get his memory back and have to be retrained rather than the forced plot of half the movie being that. Would of been far better.

The only other sequel I have found this contrived is Star Trek III - the Search for Spock (or search for a plot as I like to call it).

What a shame. The first movie was so awesome, this is a complete letdown.

Not resting on their laurels
18 November 2002
I must say the Harry Potter franchise is earning it's right to be a franchise. A fairly intelligent story, though not as many clues early on to help you solve the mystery - though perhaps on DVD review I may change my mind.

Most people who go to see this movie probably know the story already (as this is a very popular novel series), but without having read the books I still find it wonderfully entertaining.

A let down, but not a complete wash
5 September 2002
Warning: Spoilers
When you try to design a feature length movie around a character designed for sketches, it's usually near impossible to pull off very well.

Rowan Atkinson, a brilliant English comic, didn't quite pull off the impossible. That's not to say the movie is not good. It's fairly average overall. People who expect the laugh-a-minute pace of the TV series and his stand up will hate it.

Still, inside this long, drawn-out, boring story, lies many gems of comic brilliance. I don't want to give away what happens near the ending, since to say so will lay out some major spoilers. Suffice it to say if you rent this movie just to get to this scene, it's well worth it.

I'll give you a hint. If you decide to watch it and get bored, watch the scenes in the art gallery to get an idea of the plot, and get to about 20 minutes from the end and watch from there. The ending is pretty close to a 10.

A Fun "romantic" comedy.
30 August 2002
Being in the US, we tend to not get a lot of the foreign "ethnic" films. It's quite a shame. Wog Boy was quite pleasant. There was enough other story to avoid the "romantic comedy" trap, but in essence it seemed to me to be a lite romantic comedy. Don't let that detract. Nick Giannopoulos put together a story that was well constructed and executed. Of course, the characters are more "charicatures", but that's part of the fun.

Harmless fun
25 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
First, I would like to say FOR SHAME to anyone that expected a "real movie".

WARNING: There may be some mild spoilers, but I don't think it's anything that will take away from the movie.

I found this movie quite fun, though it may be a bit hard for people who don't know or are not fans of "The Croc Hunter". First, it has distinctive cinematography. The Aspect ratio of modern movies is 16x9 or "widescreen". This holds true for this movie, 'cept when the Irwins get on the screen. At that point, we revert back to the classic TV ratio of 4x3. The reason for that lends itself to the second part... any time you see the Irwin's, it's like watching an episode of their TV series! Steve and Terri narrate their way through this adventure.

Next, I must comment on the acting. I have been a fan of Magda Szubanski since I saw her on an episode of "Fast Forward" a friend sent me years ago, and she fails to disappoint. Brozzie is a cartoonish vision of an outback farmer out to protect her farm from the evil croc. This actually helps since Steve is so animated when he's not fighting a croc. Most of the other characters are people trying to just "do their job" yet keep the big secret. It's silly more than anything as the "CIA" investigates the Irwins, determining them to be possibly dangerous instigators due to the uprisings in countries they have visited.

The story, as a result, is more cartoonish than anything, especially when and where Steve eventually finds the Satellite part the croc had swallowed.

The most hysterical piece of acting is a 3 second scene where Steve and Terri had do actually "act" outside of their normal role. It was so bad, you begin to wonder if the reason for the way they made the film was because of this.

Criticism aside, this is a wonderful movie for families. It is mostly harmless fun. Fans of the TV show had the added bonus of seeing Steve on the big screen.

It is sad the movie lasted barely 4 weeks in the theater. I was the only person at a showing on a Tuesday before it closed. What a shame. The cinematography of the natural environment is beautiful. To see it on the big screen was worth it. So if it shows up in the local "second run" movie house for $1 or $3, go see it if you are a fan of his.

I gave this movie a solid 6, since it is fulfilling for his fans, but may leave others empty.

Better than Barney (but what isn't?)
11 August 2002
Well, I have no idea why, but I happened to stumble upon this movie and decided to watch. Well, I think this is a good movie for small children. Adults will find it lame and stupid. Some of the editing seems abrupt (as if scenes were left out), but small kids probably won't even notice, and if they do, it can be fun to have them fill in the gaps themsleves. Heck, isn't that part of the charm of Thomas... Imagination?

For those who remember
22 July 2002
When I was young, I remember when G.I. Joe was this BIG MANLY toy "Action Figure". Now, it's been demoted to a 3" piece of plastic. Well, If you want to reminisce, check this out. A plethera of classic 12" G.I. Joe action figures all dancing and partying in a kid's room.

This is fun animation, not just for what it's about, but for the memories of the older generation. Yet, I think young or old, we can all enjoy it.
