There are a couple funny bits
27 July 2023
There a few moments.....some genuine funny bits mostly supplied by the leads. I love a few of the actors; Eleanor Tomlinson, Bea Aisling and Jack Farthing. The plot is a number of setups for gags. I found the writing uneven, even amateurish in places. But there were spots where I laughed. I really didn't care what happened to most the characters. Although the sad sack overly talkative guy deserved some empathy. A good narcissist, as are many of these people. Sometimes following the story got very frustrating as the characters reasoning defied logic or credibility. Suspend your disbelief indeed. Anyway, if you're bored give it a shot. There are much worse things.

Clair Danes and Lizzy Caplan!
30 December 2022
There are a few for whom this will not be their cup of tea. But for me this is one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. It is thought provoking and rich on several levels. Its main achievement is to get the viewer to sympathize with then later become cold towards certain characters. The subjectivity of perception is examined. I was reminded how quick we are to judge. The narrator and most quotable is Libby. As Libby says later, people are not necessarily good or bad but are complicated with elements of both., as we learn by walking in their shoes. Clair Danes and Lizzy Caplan both give incredible performances. I see awards being given. Strongly recommend.

Excellent but shame it ended too soon
12 September 2022
I loved this series. If you enjoy most of the Masterpiece Theater series, you will like this. The stories, the acting is all round exceptional. Sad at times and funny at others. Each story is like a parable about what really counts; love, friendship, honesty and finding the good in all. There is also a little magic in some. You see the characters grow. You will recognize Brenden Coyle from Downton Abbey. I've been searching out the actors in other productions. I fell in love with Minnie Mudd! How sad they ended the series too soon because the main writer pulled out. They could have certainly done another season.

By the end you've fallen in love with these characters.
21 August 2022
The show starts off a little bumpy but builds. The acting is excellent (D'Arcy Carden!), especially the leads. The story gives you a more in-depth historical perception of what it was like dealing with racial and sexual bigotry, misogyny and the cruelty suffered by those who dared to live outside the narrow conventions then and by extension today. And we laugh and cry and fall in love with these characters. Maybe we have come a long way, but we are still far from the mountain top.

Has its good points and its not so good
23 July 2022
I did enjoy watching this. The scenery and production values are spectacular. The acting is variable but mostly good. But as others have noted, this is no Jullian Fellowes. The script and writing were a little wanting. The storyline fell into cliches at times. But I will watch the next season, hoping it picks up.

Not a classic but not awful.

It passes the time. It pales in comparison to Romancing the Stone's humor or other adventure-rom-coms. It's saved by it's secondary characters, Daniel Radcliffe, Brad Pitt, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and others. I admit I'm not a fan of Channing Tatum and his buttcheeks. It has it's moments but no real surprises. Watch if you're easy to please ( and a bit zoned out if you catch my drift.)

Very enjoyable for foodies and romcoms

If you like foodie romcoms and clash of cultures storylines with heart this is for you. It is well acted. And it has a happy ending with a message. I liked this film very much.

Very enjoyable
3 April 2022
I love Julia Child, I love to cook, I am a "foodie" and I love character driven shows. (Action film fans may want to avoid.) I've watched three episodes and smiled or laughed through each one. The acting is perfect as is the writing. It is fictionalized so it's not meant to be 100% accurate. But I believe it is true to her spirit. Showing the extent of her and her husband's affections and her insecurities personalizes this. She loved people. Where I live she was spotted often in a local market or restaurant, even Costco! She was happy to talk with anyone who approached her. Highly recommended. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Watch all of it. It's good.
21 March 2022
People who review a show without watching all of it have no credibility. This show doesn't start to take off until Episode 3 and continues progressing from there. By the end you feel you know the characters. There are those who wouldn't like anything Amy Shumer did as there are Amy Shumer fans. I won't go into why some don't like her but I think it's because they feel threatened. I enjoyed this very much. It feels authentic and deeply personal. And anyone who watches and listens carefully will find there's a lot to relate to. There are moments I felt moved and moments where I laughed out loud. Forgiveness and acceptance, learning empathy, being honest, it's all there. You can drag a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Sorry for those who thirst.

Near perfect.
15 March 2022
I'm a huge fan of Jullian Fellowes. I've watched Downton completely 3 times. Is it as good? Maybe not quite. BUT it has a similar feel. The production values are perfect. The music is perfect. Complaining about historical accuracy? Give me a break. It's fiction loosely based on history. Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixone and Nathan Lane......theater royalty! Whenever they are on screen you can't look away. Oh, the dramatics! I love watching this and can't wait for the next episode. I will be sad when the current season ends. Update: This is the first 10 star rating I've given. The main reason? Simply because it brings me so much joy. I watch every episode at least twice. They are so rich with detail. The acting is perfect, especially Christine Baranski and Cybthia Nixon. The nuances, the subtle glances every expression is just right. I've found myself smiling at the little discoveries. The characters are complex, not all good or bad. This is Prestige Television! I never want it to end.

I've fallen in love with these people
24 September 2021
There may be some valid criticisms about how this show was made. I've decided to ignore them. I don't think the producers are patronizing their subjects. I've fallen in love with all these people and their purity of thought. I've learned so much just about myself and what I can be capable of. Watch this!

To the few negative critics with ADHD here, complaining about "slow" and "boring" maybe you'd be better off sticking to the Avengers comic book movies.

Explores the diversity of relationships. I found this honest in its examination of relationships. The acting was good. I cared about the characters. They were not defined by stereotypes. I am curious to where the might be now. It's definitely topical. Anyone who doesn't like this film cannot be my friend.

First couple episodes I wasn't sure but then...
5 August 2021
This show is unique, original and unpredictable. It gradually completely won me over with well acted characters and and story lines. This show deals with OCD but it's about way more than that. It's also about learning empathy. I wanted more, to see what further happens to these characters. It made me vey sad to see it was cancelled. Maybe the gods at HBO Max will have a change of heart. There is certainly nothing else like it on any streaming service.

Only two episodes in
21 June 2021
This is unlike any show you've seen before. It's not really a comedy, it can get dark at times. And it can be jarring. This is not your typical network TV series. It is high concept and original. I am hooked and want to see where it goes. Also Annie Murphy shows her acting chops are way, way deeper than what she showed on Schitt's Creek, on which she was brilliant. She can carry this show. I eagerly wait for more. Will follow up....

So far I love this. Smart editing and production. Writing is spot on (for most part.) Best thing Jean Smart has done, and that's saying a lot. And newcomer Hannah Einbinder is perfectly believable as Ava. Looking forward to what they come up with next.

Great fun watching these great actors plying their craft
12 December 2020
I really enjoyed this film. I loved watching Streep, Bergen and Wiest. A lot of dialogue seemed improvised so there was a couple moments of awkwardness. This is a modest film. It's never quite predictable. It has little things to say about getting older, friendships and the fickleness of fate. If you like movies with thrills and salaciousness you may be bored. I have to add, the music soundtrack is fantastic and helps set the mood. Thumbs up!

Five episodes in....
6 October 2020
Yeah, it's mostly fluff, but it can be very entertaining, especially as you get to know the characters. For these times, it's a great diversion. Ashley Park is especially good as Mindy, as are the rest of the French cast. There are some old worn out clichés, of which I'm sure some are tired of. But there are some genuine laughs. It's fluffy. And sometimes you just need fluff. It's good fluff. Okay, enough fluff.

Fun film. Kudos to Millie Bobby Brown!
24 September 2020
Firstly, Millie Bobby Brown is something to be reckoned with. She is very entertaining to watch here. The movie was fun, not too dark and not as politically motivated as some other overly sensitive snowflakes here would have you believe. It's not meant as any kind of substitute for any previous Sherlock Holmes and shouldn't be compared to them. It is a very good watch and stands alone on it's own merits. I very much look forward to the sequel. Excellent job Millie!

Thank you Amy and Chris
12 July 2020
Candid, brutally honest and as authentic as you'll find. It's not about her comedy, it's about a part of her and Chris' (and Gene's) journey through very challenging times. The last hour of the film I was crying especially at the birth. And I applaud Amy for sharing her puking. Thank you for some life affirming moments in these trying times. Bless you and yours.

As someone else said, "meh"
30 June 2020
I love Will Ferrell first of all and here is his usual schtick. But overall the movie is just okay. Nothing special. I did have a good laugh during one scene, but after the movie ended I couldn't remember what the scene was. Sort of forgetful. Norway was beautiful and I would have liked to have seen more. Pierce Brosnan gave it some dignity. Overall it was mildly diverting but nothing great.. What's next?

Only just watched 1st episode
17 May 2020
I've only just watched the first episode but I'm excited to watch the rest. The acting was perfect and the writing was just right. But comedy is a very personal thing and it's obviously not to a few commentators liking. A very few. Elle Fanning is great. I've previously thought of her as a young burgeoning child actor but I've not been paying attention. My loss. I'll make a point to look for her other works. I heartily endorse this series. I will comment more after I've finished it.

New edit: This show is still one of the best written and acted anywhere. I have to respond to some of the ludicrous reviews I've read. To complain of it not being historically accurate is hilarious Hello?? Elle Fanning is amazing as is all the other acting. Anyone getting bored watching this is really the boring one. Maybe you should go back to your Marvel Universe.

It's heart is in the right place
12 May 2020
The main message I got from this was that movies can and do change the way we perceive the world. If they had made movies back then that showed life as it really was for those who were/are discriminated against, who struggled against prejudice and bigotry , movies could help end those things. The majority of audiences can be swayed. Not all, but many. Movies can paint a picture of how an improved world could look. The production values were excellent, I really enjoyed seeing the old cars. The story was very contrived, but then it was meant to be a fantasy and comedy/drama. The message took priority. Most acting was adequate but some of the veterans shined i.e Patti Lupone, Mira Sorvino and Jim Parsons always has your attention whenever he's on screen, even if he was a little over the top. Overall, I enjoyed it. I gave it 7 stars. Note to the homophobes in the comments: it's 2020. Grow up or get left behind. Your world is dying.
