Brave (2012)
Beautiful film
Just a quick review to counter a lot of the miserable sods I see writing here.
It's a simple and beautiful film about mother and daughter learning to communicate and express their love. And it's as great as any other Pixar or Disney film in that respect.
It has good characters. It is chock full of the usual mix of slapstick and cheeky humour.
The message is a good one. You can break with tradition. In fact doing so is often necessary to escape the errors of the past. And there are two perspectives to each family battle. Understanding the motives of the other is key to effective communication.
Recommended for all who enjoy great Disney stories, full of fun and vivacity and a solid moral core :)
Battlestar Galactica: Maelstrom (2007)
Excellent writing and acting - powerful drama
Such a pleasure to see more episodes like this where they dedicate the whole episode to one situation.
The whole series is Science Fiction at its very best - using future scenarios to create and explore human relationships and characters.
The actors are all settled into their characters and convincing down to the smallest looks, and the writing gives them enough space to portray all of the emotions.
This episode shocks us with the ending and left me very moved.
Like a very good book, you really feel you have been on a journey afterwards.
Code 46 (2003)
Just too boring really
They probably did as well as they could and sure the film had some nice aspects (music appropriate all the way through, interesting mix of languages, interesting concept on state restrictions and biotech etc), but overall I ended up really not caring about them very much, and I didn't sympathise with him or his choices, unless he was just so bored with his life that he needed to do something "dangerous" just for the change.
I guess they did a good job with the subject, but it doesn't really make any specific points for me, or provide much entertainment - I spent the last 20-30 minutes waiting for it to end (and hoping for something to happen that would surprise/shock/provoke me in some way to justify the relative blandness of the rest of the film).
Carpool Guy (2005)
A seriously dull film that thought it was good
I kept watching the film hoping for something interesting to happen... it was filmed as though it thought it would be interesting, and then the scenes towards the end were presented as though they thought it was a great film and we would all be in love with the characters... my only regret about this film, is that I didn't stop it after the first 20 minutes, when it was painfully obvious that it was going to be a complete waste of time.
I laughed perhaps three or four times in the film, and it had a few reflective moments on the boredom of balancing home life with work and evil bosses... which perhaps kept me watching in hope.
But they could have made the film much better... it was just too boring for way too long, in the end I was hoping that they would all be killed in nasty ways and it would turn into a delayed horror movie.
And then when they finally try and do something with the story, it ends with them all sitting around congratulating themselves on their own utter blandness, which was when I realised I had been lulled into a trance by the total boredom, and in a desperate attempt to regain some self-respect I switched off and missed the last few minutes.
Anyway... save yourself now while you still can.
