Project Blue Book (2019)
Innovative take on a historic narrative
I love everything about Project Blue Book.
Having read Dr J. Allen Hynek's original book and been familiar with most of the cases portrayed in the tv show, I am finding it rather nostalgic about all he cases I did read. The innovative take on the individual cases and the narrative of the show are refreshing and can show a completely mew generation of people what happened in the volatile 50s & 60s when the Cold War was in full effect and everything was possible. Including Aliens & UFO's.
The cast is excellent. Aiden Gillen (Dr J. Allen Hynek) and Michael Malarkey (Captain Michael Quinn) in particular has great chemistry kind of like a quasi Mulder and Scully mix. One is open to all possibilities, the other is very regimented (Captain Quinn's case his military beliefs as opposed to Scully's science hypotheses).
Season 1 was a great introduction to most of the important cases. Season 2 is elaborating further on we'll known, and some not so well known cases from Dr J. Allen Hynek's case studies.
As I am a UFO/extraterrestrial life believer, I am enthralled for the entire duration of episodes. I like that they don't try to convince that their is extraterrestrial life. It leave it as an option. Like Mulder would say "not outside the realms of extreme possibilities".
I'm looking forward to seeing how the narrative & story evolve in upcoming episodes.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
New with the Old!
Star Trek Picard offer a new, innovative & especially, fresh look at the Star Trek world.
I watched episode one with the idea of setting aide all I know, and like if the traditional Star Trek narrative.
Right from the first minute I realised just how different STP is from the original. The old foes are there - the Borg, the Romulans. Up to here, it's traditional Star Trek. The old crew is there - Data -
Picard (Patrick Stewart) is still the charismatic, icon Captain of the Enterprise, but it's a different Enterprise of course. Though ageing, STP might just have arrived at the perfect time in the Star Trek world, to protect the new narrative of Star Trek. From this aspect, this show does a very good job.
The show has a more cinematic feel to it, excellent editing, different lighting & very different camera angles of the characters. There is even swearing witch would have been frowned upon in the old Star Trek Generation days. There is also more segments of violence.
So, my underlying question is why is Jean-Luc Picard no longer the Captain of the Enterprise? What could have removed our iconic Picard aqua from the Captain's chair? A mysterious cataclysm drove him out in disgust we find! That the strength of a STP - that utopian circumstances don't just happen in the Star Trek world. I'm looking forward to ensuing episodes elaborating on this notion.
Even with a familiar face, we are cast into a new & excitingly fresh narrative of Star Trek, one much darker than we've ever seen before. I cannot wait to see where the show develops the story & narrative. Episode 1 is fantastic start....... If you are a Star Trek fan go in with an open mind & you will not be disappointed.
The Outsider (2020)
CSI meets True Crime with a sprinkling of Law & Order
Having read the Stephen King novel, I have been eagerly awaiting the TV adaptation.
Having watched the first two episodes, I can say it's a fantastic show. Love the premise of the show. It has that CSI meets True Crime with a sprinkling of Law & Order vibe to it. An innovative murder crime mystery.
It's dark and edgy from the first minute. If you like elaborate crime tv shows, you will like this show.
I readily admit that it may seem a little slow winded in getting to the point, but I personally love these types of elaborative, thoroughly investigated crime shows. I really find myself questioning and analysing each little notion I think may affect the plot & story.
The cast is superb and the acting is well portrayed.
It seems to be a popular notion lately to adapt a lot of Stephen King's novels into tv adaptations. If they are portrayed correctly they can be very good adaptations. Me Mercedes is a perfect example of a great adaptation. I see The Outsider heading that way of the plot & narrative are correctly & intricately evolved.
I see a good future for this show.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Great Addition to the Star Wars family
I had high hopes for The Mandalorian and was not disappointed. Right from the beginning when Mandalorian enters a bar & takes in two goons, cutting one in half when closing the door, I knew that Mandalorian will be a character with attitude & significant personality. Pedro Pascal does a fantastic job of portraying him. His voice has an aura about it.
Looking forward to seeing how this character develops & the morality journey he will undoubtably experience.
Love the addition of Carl Weathers. So much potential for his character - Greef Carga.
As an old skool Star Wars fan I'm finding it has everything I'd want, not forgetting the legacy but also adding innovative characters, plots and stories.
I got especially excited early on when I saw the use of Carbonite freezing, flooding my memories of Han Solo in Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi.
The special effects are superb.
Cannot wait to see how The Mandalorian develops. It shows great potential.

The Irishman (2019)
I heard you paint houses.........
The Irishman is everything that is good about the mafia genre of movies.
Having two legends of the genre like Robert de Niro (as John Sheeran) & Joe Pesci (as Russell Bufalino) only adds to the appeal of this movie.
I love movies like this that tell a deep, long ended story that spans decades. It reminds me of Gooofellas.
I myself have never heard Robert de Niro speak Italian in any of the mafia movies he's stared in, with the exception of a few words. I found this an added bonus.
I'm not concerned with the 209 minute length of the film as such a story that spans decades needs the time it needs. Simple as that.
I love the story, the acting & the chemistry the case have, in particular Robert & Joe. They are just two classics that will never be repeated. They exude attitude and that suave all gangsters have.
I found the narrative Robert de Niro provides in his storytelling is just magic. It has been too long since we had a mafia movie this good.
The fact Harvey Keitel (as Angelo Bruno) & Al Pacino (as Jimmy Hoffa) are Ali I this film, it just adds all the classic actors who have portrayed & illuminated in the mafia genre.
I'd recommend this move to anyone. I've read several books about the main characters in this movie so to see them portrayed in a feature film put things into perspective.
V-Wars (2019)
Innovative Vampire Virus Concept
As a Virologist, I have always found the concept for the cause of vampirism been a virus to be quite innovative & not outside the realms of possibility.
With that in mind, I found V Wars quite interesting. The polar regions are vastly unexplored territories so we don't know what lies breath them. So, the beginning of Episode 1, where the Prion existence for causing a virus infecting people with a disease that turns them into vampires is a great way to start a plot, that can offer many different angles for which the story can go.
While the plot turns out to not be as strong as I first envisioned after Episode 1, the ensuing episodes do makes an interesting story of humans ingenuity to combat the virus in every shape or from.
I found V Wars very entertaining. The characters could have been individually explored in greater detail, so as not to become mere caricatures of the actual plot.
But the story is enjoyable enough to provide solid entertainment. The episodes do flow well with interesting stories.
I hope there is a season 2 so that the plot & story can be further developed.

The Man in the High Castle (2015)
Great Ending though Rushed
I went into the final season with so much anticipation given how well thought out the first three seasons were.
The plot lines, and especially the twists, along with such an innovative dystopian narrative of this show, culminate rather well though a little rushed. I completely understand this given that it's the final season and it's usually the case that an ending is rushed.
This show will live long as a pure Machiavellian marvel. The concept and ideas have always been well thought out.
I will say that there are a few things that I found somewhat strange, one in particular is how quick the American Nazi general turned given the years of indoctrination they had endured. I found this somewhat hard to fathom.
Other than that, The Man in the High Castle will go out in its own way having constructed a marvellous narrative which I found so innovate from Season 1 Episode right up until Season 4 Episode.
Enjoy this show for what it is - an alternative dystopian, Machiavellian way of how different the world could have turned out.
The special effects, music and the wardrobe all are spectacular. The wardrobe of all the characters te one of the things that impressed me the most. It is so well thought out.
10/10 for a show that has been so enjoyable to see the plot develop & how it ended.

For All Mankind (2019)
Dystopian Russian Moon Landing
The title of the pilot tells you where For All Mankind will be heading = RED MOON!
I must say that I was shocked to see the first astronaut thinking it would be Neil Armstrong, only to hear the Russian Cosmonaut Alexei Leonev saying the first words in Russian "I take this step for my country, for my people & the Marxinist-Leninist way of life"
From here I knew this would be an emotional, reflective type of show.
I've watched the first two episodes & am finding the mix of historical factual & fiction rather interesting. The production values are superb, the cast & acting is very well portrayed.
If you are someone who finds themselves wondering how the world would have turned out if important historical narratives that we learned in school where not in fact the truth, then you'll love this show. I love these types of shows. The Man in the High Castle would be a perfect show to compare with For All Mankind.
I find it interesting delving into how the human evolution would have been with alternative narratives. It tests our knowledge of current historical narratives as well.
This show has so much room to progress with a fascinating story & plot.
Give it a go and have an open mind, and I'm sure you will enjoy.
