The Yellow Rose of Texas (1944)
Very Good Roy Rogers Musical Western
This Roy Rogers western features Dale Evans and Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers. Roy is an insurance investigator. The musical numbers are very good with some very catchy songs. Roy and Dale do several together and Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers do "Timber Trail" and "Song of the Rover" which are excellent. We love the musical ending which is almost like a musical Broadway Show. We also love the song that Dale sings "Moonlight on the River". Very pleasant and entertaining movie.
Fire Maidens from Outer Space (1956)
I Love This Movie
I just love this movie. I can watch it over and over and get enjoyment out of it. I first saw it in 1956 as a child and watched it many times over the years. The musical soundtrack is so captivating. Susan Shaw is very cute. It reminds me of the early Universal Pictures Horror Movies that I can watch again and again. This movie and The Mole People and Zombies of Mora Tau are my favorites from the time period. Please watch it and see if you agree with me. Many of the current movies cannot hold my interest and I have to force myself to sit through them. This movie has a certain charm and holds my interest. It is a low budget but they did a great job with the funds they had at the time.
San Fernando Valley (1944)
Excellent Movie
In order to enjoy San Fernando Valley you must watch the uncut version. It is a shame that they cut Roy's movies to 54 minutes for TV. Most of the time they cut out some great musical numbers and songs. This movie has Dale Evans (her first year in the Roy Rogers movies), Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers, Jean Porter and of course Trigger. They have an excellent musical number at the end with loads of catchy tunes and dancers. Most of Roy's movies are available uncut but you must search for them. Don't watch the 54 minute versions. One highlight of the movie is when Roy sings "How Could Anyone Be Sweeter Than You" To Dale and the Pioneers singing "Over The Rainbow Trail" to the girls around the swimming pool.
Utah (1945)
Love Utah
Another Roy Rogers movie when Republic Studios had his movies loaded with songs and music which I love. You must get the uncut version of this movie to really appreciate it. Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers sing some very good songs along with Roy. Gabby Hayes has some good lines when fighting with the women who he wishes would leave the west and go back to Chicago. There is an excellent musical stage ending where they all sing the title song and several others. The one scene where Roy, Dale and the Pioneers sing Utah against a backdrop of scenes from that beautiful state is a highlight of this movie. Again watch the uncut version.
Hands Across the Border (1944)
I Love Hands Across the Border
One of my all time favorite Roy Rogers movies. I love the music and catchy tunes in this movie. Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers add to the music and plot. I have the full length version and just love the musical ending. Republic Pictures loaded Roy's movies with musical numbers from 1943-1945 after the head of the studio saw Oklahoma on Broadway and I am glad he did. Everyone looks great and the scenery is wonderful.
I compare this movie with several others Roy made around that time including Song of Nevada (1944), San Fernando Valley (1944) and Utah (1945) which had a lot of music and songs and are wonderful to watch. Try and get the complete versions and not the 54 minute edited for TV versions.
The Singing Hill (1941)
Excellent Autry Movie
I love this movie. It has action, good songs, attractive actors and a good chase scene at the end with the special Republic chase music that was composed especially for the Gene Autry movies. Gene was at his best during the 1938-1942 period of his career and the movies show it. He had Smiley Burnette, June Story, Fay McKenzie, Mary Lee and good songs, nice stories and great scenery. The action was very well done, stories moved along and everyone seemed to be enjoying making these nice and enjoyable movies during this period. The Western Channel recently showed these movies in the uncut format and what a difference. Also the Autry Museum has them for sale in DVD and uncut. It is well worth it to see the full length versions.
Song of Nevada (1944)
Favorite Roy Rogers Movie
Song of Nevada is in my top 10 list of favorite Roy Rogers Movies. The writing and story line is very good, larger budget than his usual movies, very good songs, lavish ending production number and an overall good movie. It was cut from 75 minutes to 54 minutes for TV, but recently the 75 minute uncut version became available from the Roy Rogers Museum. For some reason I still think there are two songs missing from their "uncut" version: "A Cowboy Has To Yodel In The Morning" by Roy and "Hi Ho Little Doggies" by the Sons of the Pioneers. But it is still worth buying as this version has much more than the 54 minute version. Also Mary Lee sings some nice songs and adds to the story.
