The Ring (2002)
Distinctly average
21 February 2003
Maybe i should not have seen this movie as i have seen the original trilogy before..but i still entered the theatre with an open mind..yet walked out with mixed feelings. By no means is this a bad movie. In fact, it has some inspired additions from the original movie that embellished the story. but plot wise, tension wise and momentum wise, a lot was lost. of course, if you have never seen the original, you might just think this movie is just as good as you could ever hope, and maybe you will tell your friends how scary it is. Its obvious to say a remake is not as good as the original, but this really underlines the point. I cannot go into details without spoiling it, (check my message board comments after youve seen it) but i would urge everyone to at least check out the original. It will scare you much more than this attempt could ever hope for. 5.

Memento (2000)

movie. compelling and original vastly A

If you understood my summary line, then you'll get this movie. There has been reviews for this that have painted this movie as exceptional and a must see movie, and they would be right, but i would like to point out two things. One, you will understand it, and that realisation when it comes will put a huge smile on your face, as when the movie plays, (and it does play backwards in segments that link together) you start to figure it out. The other is that it has no resemblance to The sixth sense whatsoever. When it comes to plot twists, i would compare it more to The usual suspects. What we have here is a truly unique movie, one that cannot be faulted in any department, which, due to the nature of the story, will have you on tenterhooks til its closing (or opening) frame. I simply cannot recommend this movie enough, and if you feel im not writing much on its story its because its hard to talk about the plot without giving it all away, and it IS better if you figure it out for yourself. So read no more reviews, get the movie, heat the popcorn, and enjoy...the conversations after the movie will be intense...

Magnolia (1999)

Film making at it's most sublime.

It's not easy to write a review of this movie without overloading it with superlatives, so bear with me. Everything about this movie is a joy. When the movie first came out, trailers gave little of the story away, so thankfully i went in blind. What i expected and what i got were two radically different things, which is wonderful. An ensemble cast of exceptional actors, famous and not so well known, sow this wonderful fable of forgiveness, regret and redemption into a quilt of emotion so powerful it will stay with you for quite some time. No performances can be singled out more than another, but you will be surprised at how much Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore can REALLY act. Adding a wonderful score of the exceptional Aimee Mann, and you have a movie you actually WILL want to buy after you've watched it. Not only that, but you'll want you're friends to watch it too, and even write in to this very page and add your own review....

This explains why Klowns are scary...
16 March 2001
Okay. You've heard the expression, "a movie so bad, it's good"? What about, "a movie that knows it's bad, so just doesn't care"? Both are quite a good description of this, marvellous movie. Klassic written all over it. And why? Because it's fun. It's filmed in the gloriously tacky style of all those early B movie monster films, obvious characters, crazy plot, bizarre finale, mixed along with giant Klowns, huge ice cream cones, killer pop corn, and balloon sniffer dogs. Okay, so maybe you havent seen a movie like this before, and thats the reason you should watch it. Dumb, yes. Fun, definitely. Worth renting for a party? You bet. Watch as the actors careers die before they even started...but i'll tell you this, i know a lot of people who would love to have been in this movie, and twice more that can't look at a Klown the same way again...

As evocative and poetic as the book.
15 March 2001
Based upon the bestseller by Peter Hoeg, "Miss Smilla's feeling for snow", it would have been hard for the movie to disappoint. The performances by all are exceptional, not least Julia Ormonds portrayal of Smilla, as icy as the landscape that involves (and evolves) the movie. The movie has an almost poetic feel, so beautifully is it paced, and the story draws you in steadily as Smilla searched for the truth behind her young friends death. There are enough surprises, twists and turns to keep most people happy, and the warmth of the two leads performances are in great contrast to the snow that provides the story. I couldn't recommend this story enough to fans of the book, or anyone who is interested in seeing a movie that is not your ordinary run of the mill hollywood movie, but one with depth, character and genuine emotion.

Superb.

Alice (1988)
10/10
Beautiful, disturbing, creepy, bizarre.

There is simply nothing i can say derogatory about this movie. Jan Svankmajer is a genius in his mixture of live footage and animation. His work is at once beautiful and disturbing, yet hypnotic in its use of visual style. there are very few animators with his unique style and flair. carrolls Alice was quite adult in tone, something that previous cinematic versions failed to bring across, possibly seeing the childrens market that could be capitalised upon. I would urge anyone who has seen Alice in Wonderland or has read the books to watch this if they can, and marvel at his unusual take on the story. Full of dreamlike and creep imagery, this is one movie that will stay with you for a while....
