Halfway through really enjoying it...
Thought I'd try a new throw of review. Am halfway through and really enjoying it. Definitely elements of Old Boy and Victoria here, given the fighting and fk up missing his daughter's birthday premise, and real time unfolding of the story, albeit not one unbroken shot. But the lead guy is fantastic, he's really struggling here, physically and emotionally, and with ever increasing conflict his day is spinning out of control. And it's funny at times, without becoming facile or silly. And the journey through Berlin is accurate, he's just passing my flat now😾Will continue review when finished...
It's great! The writers took SAVE THE CAT literally but in a very good way. They avoided most cliches and wrote something really quite lovely, and super entertaining, and you will not stop grimacing at the climax fight sequence, some lovely Korean cinema esque violence. But at its heart, and it has a big one, is the story of one man's mission to do the right thing for a change. And to put the confession scene in the mouth of the father was also clever. I loved this film and to redress one stupid 1 out of 10 review that seems based on racism I'm giving it 10. Bravo.

Don't trust me only watched the intro
However that's all I need to be thoroughly assured that this show is going to be awful.... As a person in a boiler suit and Russian gas mask drags what must be a dead body in a bag across a lawn or something. Unless there is a major gas issue out there that is the lamest and laziest scary psychopath outfit going. Cut to inside the mask and the heavy breathing for a second. Obviously. By the way the music is an awful nondescript blues tune that repeats 'i did a bad bad thing'. Uff. Then the worst bit. The psycho lays down the body and starts dancing. OF COURSE HE DOES! Please no! So cliche and so badly done! THEN. He opens up the bag the body is in and stabs it and blood sprays out all over him (or her). Of course it would not spray if it was a dead body. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if they just messed that up. It looks dreadful. Do better. But then again I only watched the intro!

Stick with it!
It might seem like a FleaBag b side to start but stick with it. This show has substance and craft and characters that get under your skin. I didn't like it, ready to ditch it, then loved it. Celeste is fantastic. It's far far better than at first appears. This is long form storytelling, do not trust anyone that dumped it early because they haven't even entered act 2. From episode 5 we start to understand her trauma, and although it's story craft by numbers it's crafted exquisitely well, and performed beautifully. Stylistically it's fantastic, the flashbacks work so well, always maintaining the emotional impact we are after. Blah. Watch it. Stick with it.
His Dark Materials (2019)
MasterClass in adaptation
The film was dreadful and it looked like these classic books and this timeless story were never to see the screen again. Then someone with a sincere passion and regard for the source and a blinding ability to actualise it made this. Beautifully acted, crafted, scripted and shot, full of drama and deep darkness, all intertwined majestically to create sincere connections with the characters and some serious points about organised religion, science, love, authority, living and dying in the process without ever veering into the didactic. This is a huge success and I recommend anyone with a taste for fantasy, and obsession with reality, to go on this journey with Lyra Bellaqua.

I'm in bits
Just watched it, can barely write, I'm in bits. Absolutely beautiful.
