Can't miss this one!
15 May 2024
First time I saw this I thought it was a scripted parody. Comedy documentary or something, kind of a character like Napoleon Dynamite. (That wasn't out yet but may have gained some inspiration from this)It was just hard to comprehend that these characters were real people. They are just so unique and interesting. From Mark himself, his best friend and the old guy with the money, his Swedish mom and blunt father. It's either genius writing or real people. But when I watched it again after learning it was real I was amazed. Mark is a unique character. He can be annoying and intense. But seeing someone with that much passion, enthusiasm, and dedication is in a weird way admirable and inspiring. This guy dedicated his whole life to something and spends every waking minute pursing his dream. I have to admire that, no matter how irresponsible and misguided at times. I have never felt that way about anything or really met anyone that has. On top of all that, the movie is hilarious. His family and friends are honest and funny and a bunch of characters themselves. For some reason this is one of my favorite films. I guess it's because it's a window into the life of a real person with an insatiable passion to follow his dream.

Corny 80's movie but still a classic
8 May 2024
I see a lot of people commenting on this and here is my 2 cents. Compared to today's movies, this doesn't hold a candle. Special effects, acting, plot and timing are all lacking. But viewing it through the lens of the 80's it's pretty good. It's at least memorable. When I saw it on Tubi immediately recalled the basic story from 30+ years ago. Yes the premise is interesting. The acting is corny and has a lot of plot holes and cheese one liners. But I don't believe it was made to be a serious intellectual movie in the first place. It was a vehicle for a pro wrestler to possibly become the next Stallone or Schwarzenegger, didn't pan out apparently. It's basically an 80's action sci-fi shoot em up. Watch it with that in mind and you might like it. I think Rowdy Roddy did a pretty good job considering his acting experience is the WWF. The black guy was more believable and a more serious actor that helped it not seem too bad. Didn't like the women though, her lines, especially when they are first in the apartment together , are odd and ridiculous. No one would act that way. Almost like she wanted to be sexually assaulted. But the masks of the aliens freaked me out as a kid and are still pretty creepy today. If you are looking for a cornball action flick with a decent premise then try it out. I liked it.

Poorly written, acted and just everything
10 April 2024
Terrible cliche action movie. No character development. Nonsensical shoot em up scenes. No interesting characters or plot. Predictable surface level violence for the sake of violence. Don't get me wrong, I love violence but you have to care about the characters to become invested and in this you just want them to die. Maybe it's me, but lately I see these movies and can just tell they are acting, takes me right out of it. Everyone just phoning it in. Horrible.

Please let poor Bruce Willis retire! Is him family forcing him to work so they can get as much cash out of him before he dies or what? He looks like he needs to be in a care facility. Can't act anymore, just repeats basic lines. Makes me so sad, I used to love his acting and his movies. Now it's just depressing. Let the man enjoy a few years of his success! He can't possibly be proud of all these wooden, forced bit parts in new C movies. He clearly doesn't want to be there. Or maybe he doesn't even know what's going on. Sad. Time to start retiring some of these other old actors too. They are just ruining their reputation, they use their name until people realize it means nothing anymore and stop watching. Deniro, Cage, Malkovich, even Pacino. Here is an idea Hollywood try writing some better scripts with new actors over these terrible money grabs based on name recognition. Let these old guys retire with some dignity left. I can't possibly see anyone seeing this and feeling anything but pity when they watch these actors. Try something new. Will we ever get originality again or is American cinema dead? You have to work at it! Maybe we need AI to take over writing and acting because we can't seem to do it anymore. We want all the success without the work. Time for a change.

Gives insight into celebrity obsession
3 April 2024
I liked this documentary because I have always been curious about these type of people. It's pretty good at giving insight into what motivates stalkers and how they are built. The movie consists of two people talking, in their own words, without judgement or influence from the director. They go on describing their perceived relationship with former pop star Tiffany, and taking part in various concerts and "fan" activities. The movie is sad and very pathetic, but beyond that it is interesting. These two people seem to read into things deeply. Things that an average person would never attribute to being directed at them, these people see as a personal message or action directed to them from celebrities. Both state they are "destined" to be with Tiffany but can never really explain why. I honestly think they are severely lonely for human connection and grasp at anything. So much so when someone says a simple hello they can become fixated and interpret it as an act of love. If they stopped the obsession and started looking beyond physical appearance they might just meet someone they can have a relationship with. If you are interested in the stalker mentality, because that is honestly what this is, it is an interesting watch and offers an objective viewpoint. I would probably get restraining orders though if I were Tiffany, I can see how this could end up going very bad for her.

Boring, time jumping, political nonsense.
24 March 2024
I really wanted to like this. GOT is my favorite TV series of all time. I am even one that read the books back when they came out and thought that HBO did an excellent job of converting them to a visual masterpiece. I love dark fantasy books, movies, and tv shows. For the record I have not read the HOTD series.

I watched HOTD a few times to make sure, buts it's just not for me. No offense to any one that enjoys it. I think HOTD, like many shows, suffers from its own success, (or in this case it's predecessor). A lot of shows decline in later seasons as they become popular. Too many hands in the pot making and writing it. No singular vision. The love and creativity gets lost in trying to please fans and political agendas. Too many themes, build ups, and pandering ideas need to be included in HOTD and it's ugly. No comprehendible story line, unlikable characters, bad acting, and a closed world that seems small in comparison to the original. Mostly just a dark dreary castle with people talking.

GOT had a lot of story lines going with different villains and heros, different locations and landscapes that all hovered around the same theme. IMO HOTD overuses cgi and it seems obvious which takes me out of the story.

If the original never existed, I wouldn't even had made it through all the episodes.

In the GOT, the plot jumped between character perspectives and arcs, weaving in and out of each others stories building towards confrontation.always something new and the characters were interesting and you like them (or loved to hate them), HOTD characters are just too shallow and uncomplicated. This is one long boring political storyline. Cookie cutter trope characters with no depth. The politics in GOT added the story and contributed to the action, in HOTD the politics are the story, the action, sex, and crappy CGI seem tacked on. Seems they add the violence and sex to keep it from being just people talking but that falls flat without the viewer being invested in the character. Some might enjoy the political part of the GOT universe, I don't. Just can't keep interested. The acting is basic and I think that some actors just expected it to be a success and phoned it in. In addition, the time jump and change of characters was a mess. What little interest I had for the characters was lost with the time jump.

I am sure there are fans of this show, and I am thankful for them. Hopefully there are enough fans of this to keep GOT alive for another (better) spin off. But I usually am pretty good barometer representing the average person that watches this type of content and, if so, HOTD is not doing well in the viewership. I really hope they just wrap this and come up with a different spin off similar to the original. But probably not, GOT was a unique and risky investment that happened to pay off. HBO and American entertainment in general just doesn't take risks anymore, they just push agendas and just can't make a movie anymore without politics and pandering. Good writing and acting will always sell. Mediocre writing and acting will give you mediocre ratings.

Luther (2010–2019)

One of the best detective series of all time!
23 March 2024
I love this series and I wish it had not ended. I had seen Idris Elba in The Wire but had no idea at the time he was English. Without spoiling it for anyone I will just say if you like detective and police dramas then watch this, (especially if you like European and English crime dramas) I loved Spiral, Braquo, and The Bridge, with Luther still being my favorite.

Elba is great and the character is outstanding. After this show I added him as an "A" list actor I always watch, whatever he is in. And for me that list is really short. The first act of the first episode gives a picture of a tortured, principled man trying to do what's morally right but breaking the law in the process. This is a theme throughout and gives the viewer an in depth understanding of the moral dilemmas law enforcement face.

The crimes are horrible and unique and the thought process and human nature insight he uses to solve them are well written. His personal life is always conflicting with his professional life and adds a unique element to each story line. The complexity and relatability of his character and the top notch acting is what makes it truly a great show though. Not just Idris Elba's acting but the supporting cast as well. Justin, the boss, the various antagonists. Just very strongly written and performed.

I REALLY wish the US and Hollywood would take note and try something similar in the USA.

Well done UK!

Boring....and boring
23 March 2024
I am not a history expert and I don't need my movies to always be historically accurate. I know a lot of people had problems with the historical inaccuracy. If I cared more maybe I would too. I have also never seen the 1967 version.

In my book it's ok to take some liberties for entertainment. But I would assume those liberties seek to have a point, like trying to explain character motivations, define the mindset in America at the time and add to the development of the plot. I don't think these questions came even close to being answered, at least not in a believable way.

The writers of this had weird ideas of why criminals do what they do. Clearly they have never been poor or had much life experience . Psychic visions, fame, wanting to be a ballerina and get attention, because my girlfriend told me to? Please, Whatever. You can still have strong female characters without having them always have to run the show over some weakling idiot guy. This was a seriously missed opportunity to develop a strong female role.

Maybe it's just as simple as two personalities that feed each other and poverty that drove them to commit crimes. Maybe they wanted out but were trapped by the publicity. Not some sociopathic woman manipulating a passive man so she can get attention. Although I don't know a lot about the real history, I really doubt that Bonnie was the driving force. Just don't fit the time period or the style of the crimes.

The production values were good but ultimately this was boring and long (could have been done in 90 minutes). Also this is extremely miscast. I just didn't buy this pair as Bonny and Clyde. Sorry, I like Into the Wild with the same guy. I just don't buy him as a ruthless killer, or the actress that played Bonnie for that matter. She seems like a good actress and would probably be good in other roles. They were just wooden and non-threatening. Their emotional states didn't match the tone of the movie. Even charismatic murders have a way about them, kind of a vibe that scares people. These two just don't have it. Plus there is no chemistry between them. They didn't seem to love or even like each other. Natural Born Killers had a similar plot and the chemistry was there as well as you could believe their motivations and killer tendencies. Woody Harrelson at the time was considered a "nice" kind of stupid guy from Cheers and he nailed it. This just did not achieve the shocking and menacing vibe they needed.

But again the movie was well made and entertaining but ultimately too little action and too much added nonsense. It could have been better with an extended action scenes, less weird character arcs, and better editing. More realistic emotions and darker themes would have also been interesting.

I would recommend it as one of those movies you play in the background while doing something else and look up when some action or drama happens, otherwise I would pass.

Boring and anticlimactic
19 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been better if they actually gave all the background stories and maybe historical pictures or something about the hairy man. Build a little history and suspense. But they skipped right to searching the woods which is super boring and uneventful. I would not actually call it an abandoned town from what I saw. Old rusted equipment and some shacks. They don't seem very prepared and invested. Knocking on trees? Really? They really should have spent the night in the "town" and not on the ship. That may have resulted in a little more exposure and possible sightings of at least some wildlife. Spoiler: all they find is bear s***. Literally bear s**t. Their other "evidence" is highly questionable. Plus at one point they forget to turn on the camera overnight. Knuckleheads. I think the reason the town was abandoned is the work dried up and not some "monster" in the woods. I would pass on this one and find something a little more interesting. Maybe someone will actually do a real hairy man documentary, but this ain't it.

Pretty good snap shot of survival.
18 March 2024
Pretty good movie about surviving on your own in the wilderness. The guy is definitely making the best of his situation. Eats whatever he can hunt and supplements his diet with rice and beans he purchases every year. He survives alone in the mountains with just his dog through harsh winters. Apparently he had two horses that died, understandably with his living conditions. Not sure how he could keep horses fed when he and is dog live hand to mouth with what they hunt. The winters get desperate and he eats a rat at one point. He films it all himself and narrates his life. A lot of remembering the past and explaining how he does things. He states he was married multiple times and at one point a functional remember of society.

One thing that strikes me is he has created this narrative for his life that contributes to his station. Seems to me he is creating his own prison. Maybe he wants to live this way but it doesn't seem so. The man phrases everything as if he had little or no choice. He cries about his child but seems to have made no effort to be a part of her life. I think that getting this man some mental health care would be the best way to help. He needs to break through the barriers he has made for himself. If he started thinking differently it could get him out of the woods. He appears to have a lot of regret and feels he can't do anything about it. His black and white thinking: "I prefer this to living under a bridge". Illustrates his idea that those are the only 2 options. He must be in constant fear of being discovered as he is illegally squatting on federal land with a fake mining claim. Not to mention he is getting old and may reach a point he cannot take care of himself. He also has extensive dental issues that could result in a life threatening infection.

Overall I did enjoy the documentary and it gives one a unique perspective. Not often do we hear from an individual that walked away from society. I am impressed by his skill and dedication to surviving. Definitely check it out.

Mr. Holmes (2015)
4/10
Not the characters I recognize
15 February 2024
I wanted to like this. I am a huge fan of the original books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not so much the recent campy Americanized movies. Mr. Holmes is a decent movie but not the real Sherlock Holmes. Even in old age I think the real Sherlock would still have his spark and attitude. He seems very sentimental in this movie and uninterested. Boring and dwelling on odd things in comparison to all his adventures.

The real Sherlock was laser focused, excited about solving complex crimes for his own satisfaction, he was reserved with sentiments but never shy about being the smartest one in the room. This is a decent movie and interesting but really not Sherlock Holmes. Even in old age and with mild senility he would retain his core character and it's just not here. Where is the complex deduction and observation he is so famous for? I understand they were trying to present a aged, wiser, side of the famous character but I don't think this is it. Why is Laura Linney in this? Her terrible (Irish? I guess) accent pulls me out of the story.

I really hope someday they make a real period piece Sherlock Holmes that is true to the text. I think they underestimate the audience desire for real drama and a loyal depiction of the famous detective. We don't need all the explosions and action or corny jokes. We need a screenwriter loyal to the original text. We need a writer that explores the complex and dark side of the character that accompanies true genius. There is a reason this character has endured over 100 years.

Couldn't look away. Fantastic!

This was a great film. I love crime drama and get so bored with predictable, cookie cutter, tropes. This was truly a wild ride and unpredictable. The disabled brother is sympathetic and the motivation behind the main characters actions are questionable but in a way understandable. While he does horrible things he really feels like he is just trying to save his brother. Kind of reminds me of Of Mice and Men. I have not seen much of Patterson's past work. Just not my taste. But in this he was outstanding and believable. Most of all it kept me enthralled and interested all the way to the end scene with the credits. Loved it.

Please...

Dear Hollywood, If you want to know how blue collar hardworking people act and talk, try doing some research and meeting some instead of guessing. You clearly have no clue. Pretty much sums up the film. A horrible story of what people "think" us poor working folk are like. Disgusting display of how Hollywood views society outside their bubble. There is no depth to these characters past stereotypical cliches. Most of people don't have rich parents that offer them options, like college, law school, and clerking, beyond this type of work. They do it because they have to, not to "find" themselves.

Some great actors and actresses, just a really bad script, disjointed story and unreal dialogue. The performers past work is why I gave more than one star. Most of these people are good, but in other things.

After the ship sank and they were joking and laughing while being rescued and then went straight to the bar to party, I knew the writers had no clue. Do the creators have any idea how bad it is for a captain and crew that lost their vessel? Let me just say they would not be joking and partying. Please...

On Death Row (2012– )

Very one sided view!
12 December 2023
It is educational to watch for people who are interested in true crime. Well made, but the agenda is hard to swallow. The pretension in the title narrative is a little ridiculous , "as a German coming from a different background", come on Werner, your country has no room to judge. I know this is supposed to make people not want capital punishment but watching this made me feel the opposite. Why not show the victims families and let's hear them cry? Or the people that suffered at the hands of these sociopaths. We should be able to hear both sides of the story. The interviewees lying and manipulating is transparent. Self-serving stories that are mostly beyond any logic. Plus alot are smug and laughing and joking, almost bragging in a way. Listen to George Rivas smug attitude about the crimes he committed in episode 3. One person in episode 3 we were supposed to sympathize with because he was just there tying up hostages when the murder happened. Really? You were involved in felony crime after escaping prison where an innocent police officer was killed on Christmas Eve and your only excuse is " I didn't shoot him". You had no choice but to escape because you had 18 life sentences? What's that 3 years with parole ? Episode 4 a man that murdered a woman and stabbed two young boys to death. He was too drunk or high to remember as an excuse. The most simple explanations to all these is usually the correct one. They are murders and committed these various crimes, the only reason they feel sorry is they got caught and are going to pay. These are last ditch efforts to play on soft and privileged people's sympathies. I say privileged because most people have not had to live with the actions of these people or been preyed upon by predators, I imagine if they did they would have a different opinion. It's really offensive to victims families and comes from a point of view of people who have never suffered being the victims of crimes. Very little real remorse from these criminals, it's mostly non existent but occasionally an attempt is made to fake it. I am sorry, but.....me,me,me. Better to watch some of the true crime shows that show both sides, hear from the victim's families then decide the death penalty isn't warranted. Try telling it to the mother and father of a murdered child. You can always drum up exceptions to anything if you dig, but by and large they mostly deserve exactly what they get.

Very well done
17 August 2019
I read the book by Dan Simmons about 10 years ago. The tv series really does a spectacular job of creating suspense and drawing you in. There characters are exceptionally well written and relatable. The acting is superb from a veteran cast. The setting and scenery is so amazing you can almost feel the cold. Very well done AMC. I would recommend this to any history buffs or horror fans. The story follows the crew of 2 English ships in search of the northwest passage through the arctic and there survival when they are frozen in the ice. They are hunted by a seemingly supernatural polar bear bent on their destruction. It kind of reminds me of the movie Master and Commander with Russel Crowe but much darker. I love it!!!
