Valhalla Rising (2009)
True masterpiece, a work of art. Deep and raw...
This is what i call cinema at it's true and pure essence. This movie is raw, intense and beautiful. It focuses on the human nature, throws some great concepts from Nietzsche and adds a primal yet substantial ideology on how we are connected to nature. It reminds me of Apocalypse Now and how the journey moves on. Excellent cinematography and atmosphere. It really took me into the movie and made me enjoy every single second of it.
I've read some bad reviews and seen some negative ratings on this one, and i totally understand why. This movie caught a lot of attentions because of it's title, being English spoken and also because of the trailer, but sadly it ended up in the hands of some action-popcorn-thirsty-kids. Please go see Lord of the Rings and leave the ratings to those who seek a deep and philosophical movie. I'm not an intellectual freak and i love Lord of the Rings and other blockbusters but to those not familiar with Tarkovsky, Fellini, Bertolucci or even Leone will surely dislike this movie and not be able to see it till the very end.
The soundtrack is amazingly rich and original, the visuals are stunning, the story is simple yet deep and meaningful. I would say this is a cult movie and a must see, one of the best movies ever.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Born to Run (2009)
What an amazing twist!
Have you ever wondered what does happen when John Connor assumes the role of leader in the human revolution against the machines? Well, this is the answer, to how it all started. Everyone who has been watching the series will be amazed and overwhelmed by the twist at the end. All episodes converge to this single point in the Terminator universe and they make an almost perfect ending to the series. Almost... because there are still questions left to be answered. Besides that it is beautiful to see what any Terminator fan always wanted to see, how the future begins to humanity. Absolutely brilliant! Don't miss it!
They should do another Terminator series called 'The John Connor Chronicles'
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Cliché
I'll start by pointing what i really enjoyed. The acting is mind blowing, so much great actors all put together in one movie drew my attention at first sight. Specially Kevin Spacey and Benicio Del Toro. Bryan Singer is a good director and i can't say much about how perfectly directed this movie is. Not to mention, the soundtrack! Beautiful.
Now, i am the kind of guy that watches movies since very early in the childhood and had kept watching tons of movies until nowadays. My father is a director, i guess that explains. So I'll point out what i didn't like in this movie. First of all, i anticipated a lot of dialog of the movie. Specially all those remarkable lines. But worst of all, i figured out the ending way before i should have. So i hate to say this to a good movie with an excellent cast and with a good director, but i found it to be HIGHLY CLICHÉ ending twist!
That ending just happened too many times in other movies, the "crippled man cover" has been seen through and through. I understand that this movie is being overrated by the regular weekend movie spectator. So i would give this advice to people who know movies and have seen a lot of them, do not expect too much of it or you'll end up like me. It surely doesn't deserve to be considered a cult movie or a must see.
This is a good thriller, i enjoyed it. And that's it.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008)
I'm hooked...
Well, to start I'm gonna tell you I'm a Terminator fan. And being a Terminator fan i could never think about a sequel or a TV series without Arnold, it just sounded wrong! But after seeing this i must admit i was totally overwhelmed by the character Cameron, played by Summer Glau. It is mysterious, intriguing and more complex than i would ever expect. Summer Glau who appears to be a mediocre actress that fits well in the role of a machine, is actually a great actress and she proved that more than once in some episodes. It really seems that the plot is evolving in a direction where her talent as an actress is going to be shown more often and more intensely.
Sarah Connor and John Connor are very well played by Lena Headey and Thomas Dekker. These are also very interesting characters and are deeply explored. The directing is amazing in all episodes, the soundtrack is as good as the original one from the movies (maybe better). But what holds me on to the screen is seeing the relation between John and Cameron evolve. Cameron is a true femme fatale and John seems to hold on to himself as his secret feelings for this machine come to the surface as the series go on.
I would love to see a new Terminator movie with the actors from this series. In fact these series reflect the very true essence of the Terminator movies. Unfolds some mysteries, reveals others and promises to be filled with surprises in the upcoming episodes.
V for Vendetta (2005)
This movie almost made me believe there is Perfection
I wasn't even really aware of the movie i was about to see. I thought i should give it a try since i knew it was written by the Wachowski and based on a comic book. I expected another ''hero'' movie with lots of good action and very entertaining. But then, i realised it was much more than that. There is such a deep message in it which is delivered with so much beauty and love that it inspired me and changed my spirit. Beneath the Anarchist side of the movie, it is the mirror of our world, where everything seems to be fine, a world ruled by TV and the media in which we consider to be telling the truth about what happens. It represents the control governments have trough fear which they generate to attain power over us. And weak in mind as we are fall into it. V for Vendetta really is an eye openner and makes you see different prespectives of the world we're living nowadays. Natalie Portman is at her best as well as all the other actors. Great work of art!
Last Hippie Standing (2002)
The Heart of Goa
This short documentary shows a world that was forgotten. The Hippie culture. Many think it vanished in the 70's. This is wrong. And that's exactly what this documentary says. This is a journey into the heart of Goa and into the hearts of the people who abandoned society, left everything behind and went to Goa to start over. In search for beauty, peace, love and Spirit. The true essence is captured in the documentary, and there is a lot of information you might want to know if you are into the Psichedelic Trance culture. It's origins and why it was spread all over the world are some of the issues Goa Gil will be talking about, all of this along with some great archive footage of Goa back in the 60's and 70's. If you are not familiarized with this don't ignore it. I really think everyone should watch it, even if you are 16 years old or 70 years old (specially if you lived the 60's) it enlightens you to a sub-culture long forgotten but very real nowadays. It shows a growing Hippie culture that survived time and the pressures of society. This is a rare documentary to find. Make sure you grab it if someday it flashes before your eyes.
Les mémés cannibales (1988)
They made a comedy instead of horror movie.
Now this is one of the worst films i've ever seen. The best way to explain why, it's as simples as this: The director is an amateur, the actors are amateurs, the script is amateur...the entire team has no clue of what a movie is. So, you can notice that the director wanted to create a horror movie, but turned out to be a comedy. I really laughed at some scenes, not because of comedy content, but because of the stupidity of some scenes that should be frightening. I would have vote 1 out of 10 but i voted 2 because of this involuntary comedy factor that is present. Don't waste time of your precious lives watching this movie.
Hook (1991)
Nostalgia Factor
I was drawn by Steven Spielberg's vision of Neverland. An impressionist and impressive vision of Peter Pan's surroundings. Spielberg tries to wake in each of us the child within, or at least make us remember it. It had a bit nostalgia effect on me, a very deep feeling of innocence. In this movie you can feel a kind of spirit floating, you feel the weight of the past, the legend. I mean, you feel like reading Peter Pan's stories since you where a kid and now you get the chance to know Neverland, where all those stories happened a long time ago. It is a very good feeling of fantasy and Spielberg's magic! I won't say it is a "must see", it's not. But for some people like me who can feel that "magic" in the movie it is a very good movie worth to see more than one time and to be remembered. Excellent directing! Good actors, specially Robin Williams and of course, Dustin Hoffman. Great soundtrack, the eternal John Williams.
I understand the fact why some people hated the movie, if you never seen it i would recommend it. The feeling it had on me made me love it, the same effect on you may make you hate it, but i hope you get much pleasure as i did.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
The Magic of Close Encounters
As we all know Steven Spielberg has always been one of the best directors bringing a story to screen, his ability to tell stories is contagious, touching, wonderful, inspiring and absolutely magical, Close Encounters of the Third Kind is the perfect example of a Steven Spielberg's movie. This is one of the movies which i have seen most times in my life and it grew up with me since i was a little child. About the movie, Close Encounters is like an unforgettable mysterious magical experience who makes us look at the sky in a different way we looked. All along with the movie and to intensify this experience there is Spielberg's favorite music composer John Williams, at his best! The special effects are very good if we consider the fact this movie is from 1977, some 80's movies have worse special effects. Of course there is no need mentioning about the directing...it is Steven Spielberg! A very good story involving love, mystery, fascination and amusement. This is a ''have to see'' movie! A very important influence on nowadays science fiction movies. Truly inspiring!
