The Amazing Mr Blunden (2021 TV Movie)

Disappointing
26 December 2021
I am sure some bright young thing thought you could take a children's classic and just update it to make it relevant to todays 'yoof' but in doing so just turned an original story into an anodyne tale. It doesn't work on many levels but particularly doesn't work based in 2021. Someone has tried to hit all the right buttons to show how right on they are but instead produced stereotypes, what value did two men kissing bring to the story apart from gaining brownie points?

The actors did their best, Simon Callow gave a good performance .but it wasn't enough to save a poor script it all seemed rather amateurish. It will satisfy young children and those who have never read the original book by Antonia Barber but but for a real adaptation see the 1972 film which is excellent for all ages.

Not Worzel Gummidge..

If you were looking for a faithful retelling of the book where you are willing to suspend belief as you get drawn into the characters of the young children and their adventures then this is not for you If however you were looking for something whose only resemblance to the original book are the character names and you want to embrace the politically correct, diversity eco right on luvvie message then this is something for you to bang a drum to. The screen play writer says he never saw the original series and it appears he has also disregarded most of the elements of the book which made it a classic. Do yourself a favour and read the original book or see the original series with Jon Pertwee in.

Confusing
31 March 2020
The film translates as The Endless Day and endless seems appropriate. The film starts off with three apparently abandoned children. Where are the parents? We do not know nor do we ever find out. It is always hard to make a film of this length with just three characters especially when it comes to young children. The film is interminably slow and covers a couple of days of the mundane activities of children left alone almost like a documentary then it finishes abruptly with some relief. No apparent plot I do not know why this film was made.

Budget Independent Film
25 March 2020
I have to say first of all that the budget was tiny and on that basis it was a good effort. Like others I found the sound hit and miss and some of the acting was below par. I'm not even sure if this is a ghost story or the inner workings of a solitary child who is attempting to compensate for a past that wasn't his. The premise was good and perhaps could have been developed more. I watched the ending twice and still find it obscure coupled with the beginning it left me unsatisfied like reading a book with pages missing.

Unsatisfying

Warning: Spoilers
Where to start? The acting is the best part of this but what there is of the plot has too many holes. I can buy that the main character could become a vigilante of sorts whose raison d'etre is rescuing young girls from traffickers albeit this wasn't entirely for altruistic reasons as he was paid. Joe is then engaged by a US Senator to rescue his daughter and return her from where she is being prostituted after being kidnapped. Now if you were in such an important position as a US Senator and your 13 year old daughter had been kidnapped and you knew where she was would you A) Involve FBI or B) Hire a vigilante?

But it gets more real because our hero Joe rescues the girl only to learn on TV that this Senator has apparently killed himself right before security forces come knocking on the door snatch the girl back and attempt to kill him which he dodges.. He then tries to get in touch with several contacts who all been mysteriously killed until he ends up home where he finds his mother has been killed also but the killers are in the house still. He shoots both of them but one is still alive conscious and quite talkative ans informs him that senator Williams snatched the girl back because she was his favourite. So off Joe goes and manages to get into Senator Williams property where he finds the senator with a slashed throat and the girl with blood on her eating dinner. They then ride off into the sunset together.

No one apparently missed the daughter of the senator and no one questioned where she was not her school, friends or family and there were no security people at Senator Williams house either or CCTV alarms etc noting this couple leaving his property. I feel like the kid who shouted ' The Emperor Has No Clothes' when everyone else was admiring his outfit. I can suspend some belief for art but I need some continuity that says this could happen. It impressed the chattering crowds but left me a little empty.

Strange

I am not sure what to make of this film, perhaps I needed to suspend belief and believe in the characters more. Father apparently loses child and has recurring dreams about the last day although why or how the child died is not mentioned or shown. Then we have the situation where this man appears to be having a breakdown because of his grief. The premise of the story appears to question what is real and what isn't and just left me bewildered.
