Creepshow (2019)
Inconsistent Episode Quality But Good Overall
Creepshow is an anthology horror series, the first season being 6 episodes with 2 stories per episode. The quality of each segment is so inconsistent that my opinion is much different now that I've seen all 6 episodes than it would have been a week ago when I had only seen 5 of them.
I had low expectations for the series after watching the first episode. They are probably the most conventional segments of the first season, but compromises made due to the low budget leave them with an amateur feel.
Other episodes embrace their low budget and B-Movie quality source material, and this is generally for the better. There are some really awful, substance-less episodes such as "All Hallows Eve" and "Times Is Tough In Old Musky Holler", others are truly bizarre scenarios that hold your attention like "Lydia Layne's Better Half" and "Skincrawlers", while others are campy and serve as semi-entertaining filler such as "Bad Wolf Down."
The segment, "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain", in the final episode realized the best balance of conventional storytelling and budget limitations and demonstrated the full range the series is capable of. It is hard to rate an anthology series when the quality of the individual episodes vary so much. However, Creepshow is ambitious and offers a variety of distinct stories and filming styles. I am hopeful the show has found its' footing and leverages the best of what we have seen in the first season when production of the second season begins.
