Powder Keg (2001)
Amores Perros showed promise...
...but this film sux. Gonzalez Inarritu tries to use a conventional narrative structure that doesn't conform at all to the limitations of short film. Where it should focus on the imagery, it tries to establish dialogue and familiarize the viewer with the characters' history. There's no time for that! Show the BMW and los malos hombres and wrap it up!
The Follow (2001)
Mickey Rourke--nothing ever changes
I had to watch this film, the third short in the BMW series, several times before I appreciated how good it is. The spare dialogue is perfectly timed to bring out the pure visual lyricism of the film. Solid supporting cast including the always watchable Forrest Whitaker and Mickey Rourke--art imitates life.
Chosen (2001)
The Buddha and the Hulk in a short film by Ang Lee
Second in the BMW series, this film is very different from the first BMW short by John Frankenheimer. Not as tightly structured as that film, but it has moments of poetry--particularly a balletic chase sequence. Final "Hulk" scene wraps the film up tidily.
Ambush (2001)
Old-school action from the director of Ronin
Everything that a short action film should be--a gut-wrenching chase sequence built around a well-balanced narrative structure and callous disregard for bystanders. More than just a promo for BMW, although it does make the car look pretty tough. Worth watching several times--it's only about five minutes long!
