Soul Plane (2004)
soulless
The title tell s you where its heading. A commercial Hollywood producing with the word 'Soul' says its going to be a parody of Black culture an d characteristics done badly and diluted so as to cash in on mainstream. Result, offend everyone in its morals and production.
Racial stereotypes and black/white culture are embraced rather than dispelled. Tom Arnold definitely steals the show as he is an excellent comedy actor. Some of the jokes are forced. Some awkward moments. Dwayne Adway is a bit weak in the leading role needed to stick to being the straight man. Stewardess Sofia Vergara has landed in this film from being pictured on a footballer's arm. And like Francine Dee (who plays the Chinese stripper here)is another one of the models and women that have appeared as portraits by the GB artist and psychic Stephen Armourae. This film tries to be an Airplane spoof. But that in itself was a spoof. Double negatives don't work well. But it has enough laughs to be worth looking at.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
die Saruman
Tolkein got bombastic as the books progressed. The prose increasingly indebted to the King James Bible. Similarly I could have done with less portentous speeches and lines in all 3 films. But here is the climax the impeding destruction of evil. Where the hell is Christopher Lee? He rightly complained bitterly about filming all his work putting his soul into it , to the point where he dismissed Star Wars in interviews as fiction and LOTR as being 'real'. The story for those of you who have better things to do than read 2000 pages of goblins, revolves around a magic ring which will give its possessor immense power. The tyrant Dark Lord Sauron (a figure who is never actually seen on screen and is the worse for it as the animated version in the 70s didn't give enough screen time to the most evil character since Satan.) demands the return of the ring in order to dominate Middle Earth. His enemies, led by the wizard Gandalf, are seeking to destroy the ring, which can only be used for evil purposes, as it corrupts its wearer as a result of being forged by Sauron himself. . At the beginning of the final part of the trilogy, Sauron's forces are massing for an attack on the kingdom of Gondor. The film relates the story of the conflict which follows. Again more big battle sequences, many are impressed by this , I would rather have a substitute with less battles. The acting is uniformly good, as a result of Peter Jackson being a proper director unlike Lucas who is only interested in translating sci fiction technology to the screen. The magnificent New Zealand scenery,is matched Howard Shore's musical score. This mixture of talents and nature raise this piece of fantasy far above other examples in the genre.
Mafia Princess (1986)
mafia at its best
Lucci is perfectly cast as the title character. Being of Italian descent herself. As usual they don't make full use of the talent they have at hand and only use a TV movie budget when all involved could have made a more satisfying piece with a feature budget. To add to it they have got Tony Curtis involved and the script editors are looking underneath to see why mobsters make such bad family men. Something to do with commitment s to organized crime maybe? The clever part of the script is casting Curtis as not stained with murders. Instead maintaining control throughout with his presence to keep his lieutenants in line. An added bonus is seeing Lucci's talent and beauty which explains how she influenced the 'Catherine PRendergast' portraits by the GB actor and psychic Stephen Armourae. See this and 'Invitation to Hell' is to see that Lucci is one of the best in Hollywood and why she has impressed Armourae so much.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
kick kick and Hollywood roll
This movie has an excellent production design(sets, props, costumes, weapons) as enough money was thrown at it as it's a Hollywood Blockbuster. and two original original fight scenes. As Mark Kermode the movie critic says there has never been a decent film taken form a video game. Here an adult movie premise has childish execution. A change to see a female hero, but there's disparity in character She was raised as aristocracy, loves her daddy, but seems to have a total disdain for other people only too happy to blow them away. The whole appeal of this film is in the casting of Jolie and her inhumanely perfect body. Sort of appearance that reminds one of one of the portraits by the actor and psychic Stephen Armourae. She could have been a model for the 'Catherine Prendergast' portraits. So there is little bother with a plot as its by Hack writer/director Paul "W.S." Anderson has cornered the market on making bad movies from video games -. Now we can see what can happen when put in the hands of some talent. With it, it also seems that director Simon West (previously of the atrociously trash 'Con Air' and 'The General's Daughter') has found his niche. Combined with Jolie they manage to pull this up from the sewer. Just don't expect miracles and you shouldn't be disappointed. Think Indiana Jones with a bust and a worse script and just accept it as that.
