I Spy: Mainly on the Plains (1967)
Karloff Shines with Enthusiasm
As a Boris Karloff fanatic , I had to track down this episode. I had seen it as a child on it's original run , and always remembered the scenes of Boris fighting the windmills, a la Don Q. Boris is a nuclear scientist who has developed anti-missile technology. Of course, it's up to Culp and Cosby to convince the nutty Boris that the good old USA will use his discovery for the good of humanity. In the meantime , Karloff leads our heroes into some bizarre situations that are life threatening including deadly encounters with some nasty German agents who also want the technology for their own evil purposes. Boris is surprisingly athletic here, considering that he had just filmed "Die , Monster, Die" , playing the entire movie from a wheelchair. Here, he runs (albeit with an obvious leg brace), is flipped up in the air by Spanish peasants, and wonders about energetically, giving a wonderful performance as an old man with Alzheimers. This episode really shines compared with some of the other TV work he was doing at the time (The Girl from UNCLE , The Wild Wild West). Karloff fans will want to see this one.
Jan-Gel 2: The Beast Returns (2001)
WoW, This movie Rocks
Conrad Brooks has got to be one of the great independent video movie directors of all time. This dazzling sequel to "Jan-Gel, the Beast from the East" continues the story in Florida, where Conrad is hot on the trail of the resurrected monster. Conrad displays his usual witty acting style, and is ably supported by talented players, including Robert Ellis and Richard Bereseford who are both outstanding in their parts . This movie ends with a tribute to Conrad's mentor, the late great Ed Wood, with whom Conrad worked in such classics as "Plan Nine from Outer Space" and Glen or Glenda". This title is available as part of a double feature with the original "Jan-Gel" from Movies Unlimited.
Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)
Boring and Mundane
This is the most boring movie you will ever see....with verrry looonnnnggg takes in which nothing at all happens . The best thing about it is that you don't have to understand French to know what's happening ... I have seen amateurish unedited home movies that are more entertaining. Even the supposed "shocking ending" is a complete dud.
Also , This thing is waaayyy toooo long at 3 1/2 hours.
It's as if the camera crew set up, then went on a long coffee break.
Somebody please edit this movie to about 80 minutes. I saw this on Turner Classic Movies. Was Robert Osbourne actually praising this film ??
Season of the Witch (2011)
Don't Believe The Bad Reviews. This Movie ROCKS !!
This is the best monster movie I've seen in years. It begins with a nod to Michael Reeves' "Witchfinder General" with the similar execution of suspected witches, but with a twist. This film is a buddy movie with Nick Cage and Ron Perlman as Crusade soldiers killing in the name of the Lord. After quitting the holy wars in disgust, they learn of a plague killing the good people. The two are captured and jailed as deserters, then taken to the Cardinal (Christopher Lee) who offers them a reprieve if they transport a suspected witch to trial. They soon learn that this supposed witch-babe is actually possessed by a demon that is causing the plague. The final showdown is a real hoot. Cage and Perlman play this with a sly sense of humor. Christopher Lee is on the screen all too briefly under heavy make up. The FX are great. A very cool horror film to start the new year.
Women and Bloody Terror (1970)
This one lives up to it's title.
I saw this one at the drive-in on a double feature with "Night of Bloody Horror", also with a young Gerald McRaney. The drive-in was packed, and people were even watching from the bowling alley across the street. This one is the better of the two, and includes an oversexed mother and daughter team, boobs ,rape , murder, car crashes, and a very downbeat ending. Although "Night of Bloody Horror" is available on video and DVD, "Women and Bloody Terror" has vanished. I can"t find it anywhere. Anyone got a clue? Probably Joy Houck's most entertaining effort. This one made Castle of Frankenstein Magazine's list as one of the all time worst, but worth a look . Where can I get this movie ? UPDATE AUG.30,2011 : I was able to find this ultra rare movie at VIDEOSCREAMS.
