Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Disgusted
My 6 year old insisted on watching this movie because the dragon resembles chinese dragon which is our heritage. After watching the movie, researched the casts and trivia, I can't help feeling disgusted by the culture inappropriateness and the unspoken sino phobia.
The type of dragon portrayed was originated in China. Once it was introduced to India, it was incorporated in Buddhism and demoted to a less impressive animal. The whole movie was set in an imaginary land, but full of culture references. The creative team spent time visiting all the places adopted or heavily influenced by Chinese culture and some are part of sino sphere, but they do not bother to mention anything remotely connected to China. This is just sooooooo annoying. China has existed for thousands of years, long before CCP took over. Hollywood has no problem using culture elements originated from China, but painted it over and mislead the unfamiliar audience with Asian culture. This is so dispectful. Just because other nations adopted chinese culture and customized to their traditions, it doesn't make them the origin of the civilianzation. We all know what most famous ancient civilianzations are. When can Hollywood put political agenda aside and probably present chinese culture nd civilianzation unbiased? Before they can do that, I have to stear my children away from any Asian fusion movies make by the west. I don't need these junks to silently undermine my kids' sense of pride in their heritage. I don't want my kids seeing a Chinese character and automatically think that's Japanese. I don't want them to watch Mulan and think it was a story about feminism and self realization. The past few years of hypened waves of marginize and demonize China really showed the true color ofany people. Situating.
Designated Survivor (2016)
When u try to be everything and please everyone, u ended up being nothing and please no one.
This show was good for season 1. It was not house of cards. It is a lone wolf saving the world typical American patriotism on steriod show. But that okay. As a non-american viewer, I am used to it and can stomach it with a sense of amusements. Sutherland and Maggie Q held my attention throughout season 1.
Season 2, the show started trying to be everything and to please everyone, and ended up losing its focus. After Kirkman and his administration fire fighting a whole season, I really hope he did not announce the campaign. Oh well, I was wrong. Season 3 just went from bad to worse. So many irrelevant new characters were introduced with little to no substances to the show other than stereotype labels. It reminds me of the recent Calvin Klein billboard model selection. Trying to tick off each minority boxes to be inclusive. As a minority who fits in many boxes, I found it very annoying. Please stop pleasing me with superficial things and issult my intelligence. I just want to watch a feel good American patriotism show chanting "the most powerful man in the free world", "the leader of the free world" "the toughest job in the world" and "god bless the United States of America." It is so far from what the world really thinks the US and from the reality we are living in today, but it is entertaining. (I honestly think China has a tougher job by simply feeding 20% population on the planet, but dare I to say that without being attacked for not being politically correct). When Kirkman started being a hot head and looseibf his marbles in public in every episode, instarted loosing interest in the character. These outbursts did not make him personable, but sure made him less leaderlike. And the worst of all, Netflix killed the show by making Kirkman turning from a register independent in season 1 to a unregistered far left liberal. And this was very disappointing. Netflix pretend to be authentic by adding sex scenes and swearing words, but did not have the guts to address the elephant in the room which is the country is deeply divided. Season. 1 gave viewer the hope that this show might be able to shine some light in this area, but nope. I over estimated Netflix and the writer. If season 1 was a solid 7 in its category, season 2 is a 4 and season 3 was just a 1.5.

American Murder: The Family Next Door (2020)
Very difficult to watch
This is very difficult to watch towards the end. My heart still aches hours after watching this.
Tenet (2020)
Very pretentious
As a Nolan fan, I found this movie very pretentious. The backdrop of the story is nothing new. Bad Russian or Russian affiliated arm dealer wanted to destroy the world for whatever reason. American hero and his allies saved the world. The same concept throughout hollywood movies that has become empty and hard to emotionally invest in the movie. The acting was okay. None of the actor or actress acted in a conceiving way. In long dialogue scence, I rarely felt the emotion behind the lines. I didn't believe the actors and actresses understand or believe in their lines. The whole Nolan style mind twisting plots just became a game for audience to participate and brag about their intellegince later as "I am so smart that I watched Tenet and understand it!" So what? The whole movie is based on a self-centered, seemed nobel concept, to serve director's own self worshiping ego. Neither time traveling nor nuclear weapon ends the world is a new concept. Even with Nolan's new twist, this type of cold war mentality is just so boring and uninteresting. This is, if told without being purposely mysterious, a very average action movie with good visual effects. Very shallow movie.
Yi miao zhong (2020)
This is NOT a warm hearted movie
It is quiet opposite of what it seems like from the surface of the movie. The daughter was actually killed by the delivery truck. And the movie was supposed to end without the 2 years later. To viewers who are familiar with the 10 years of culture revolution, this movie is filled with underline messages of that period. By editing out the cause of death and adding reunion totally changed the tone of this movie. But regardless, director Zhang delivered his best film in the past two decades, given the circumstances.
