Damsel (2024)
What is the problem?
When did moviegoers start nit-picking every tiny thing and stop just enjoying movies?
Was this the best fantasy movie ever made? No, it wasn't.
Was the cinematography so breathtaking it brought tears to your eye? Nope. None of that here.
Was the script perfect in every way? Yeah, not so much.
Was the acting superior to anything you've ever seen before? Not really. It was good, but didn't quite reach a level of excellence.
Was the story unique in every way? I have to admit it was a tad predictable.
However, with all that, I was able to sit back and just enjoy myself with a bit of frivolous entertainment. In fact, it's worth watching again.
So, you nit-pickers can keep searching for flaws and faults if you like. I plan to keep searching out enjoyable frivolous entertainment.
The Ritual Killer (2023)
Pointless
Too slow to be considered a thriller. Too many subplots that were ham-handedly handled.
The professor challenging the student to Google a culture that he couldn't coexist with. What happened with that and how does that tie in with the main plot? It doesn't.
The police detective in Italy questioning people, showing a picture we never get to see. Then connecting with our detective in America, but conveniently forgetting vital information. Useless filler that could have been handled so much better.
The death of the detective's daughter, told through thoroughly horrible flashbacks. More useless filler.
All in all, the movie meanders pointlessly all over the place without actually going anywhere worthwhile.
Invasion (2021)
Mediocre at best
You read low reviews telling you not to trust high reviews. Then you read high reviews telling you not to trust the low reviews. They are both right. The show is mediocre at best.
It's not a sci-fi alien show like the preview shows. It's a character-driven drama. Not saying one is better than the other.
The most frustrating part for me are the Japanese scenes. Sometimes the subtitles work. Sometimes they don't. Yeah, it's that way across all devices. Hard to stay interested in something you can't understand. Just a word to the wise. Authenticity of languages won't enhance your show if the people watching can't understand it or translate it into a language they understand.
Virgin River (2019)
Extremely disappointing
I read and loved all the Virgin River books and I used to live in Humboldt County.
This is an okay show if you like Hallmark movies. But it is nothing like the books. Yeah, I know shows don't have to be like books to be considered based on them. I just expected something, anything, to be like the books.
The scenery is nothing like Humboldt. I especially laugh at every mention of Eureka. They make it sound like a ritzy resort town when in reality it's a haven for lowlife druggies and homeless.
Other than names, none of the characters are what I expected. Even the storyline is wrong. Not really bad, just not based on the storyline from the book. So, I'm forced to ask, why name it after the books?
Testament (1983)
What did I just watch?
This was about as interesting as watching grass grow. This was supposed to be how a family and community survives a nuclear holocaust. I expected to see people coming together, struggling to find food, etc or for the close-knit community to fall apart in the struggle. Neither happened.
I didn't see any efforts by anyone to survive. I saw people waiting around to die. The only one doing anything constructive was the boy. His mother just sat around the house writing in a journal that no one is ever going to read.
I wasn't so much bored as I was infuriated at the lack of anyone actually doing anything.
