Joe Pickett: The Missing and the Dead (2023)
Season 2, Episode 1
4/10
Smothered the episode in too much tension, drama, and darkness
14 June 2023
My wife and I haven't gone back to show since this episode (loved 1st season). As the first season developed, viewers got to learn about Joe and his family and the challenges he and his family face at many levels, and the mystery and tension slowly ratcheted up. Most of all, you begin to care about these people. And by the time the season is over, I felt both exhausted and satisfied for the most part. Rinse and repeat?

That's exactly how this episode felt. So much all at once, with overwhelming darkness over everything. There is nothing to look forward to for this family.

The one bright spot were some of the sideshow characters, but again, felt like too much all at once.

We will likely go back to, but not at the moment.

Ghosts of Christmas Always (2022 TV Movie)
8/10
Very original Christmas Carol inspired movie and not at all like typical Hallmark
16 November 2022
Production quality and acting better than most. Really good story my wife and I both enjoyed, Several surprises in the story that we didn't see coming which again was refreshing for a Hallmark movie and usual Christmas movies. Diverse cast is good to see and where some of the secondary parts were the kind you wanted to know more about by the end. The movie is a bit of a mystery through-ought and it's not about girl getting the guy she wants, although there is a bit of that. The characters don't really know what is going on or think they know and you get to experience them figuring out as they go along. Solid Christmas movie.

Watching entire series over last couple weeks and just getting worse. . .good news, can't imagine worse than this. . .

This episode is worse than I could have imagined. Without spoilers, when characters we already have a good sense of their backstory and then filler material giving another perspective, not nearly as interesting or compelling as previous backstory and just cringeworthy story and lines spoken. Sigh.

Predictable

Very forgettable episode. There was zero mystery, and joked with my wife about ending I expected about halfway through, which is exactly how it played out. Very somber episode overall and boring.

A lot of good content and a lot of missed opportunity

The end of 60s love, drug use to drug abuse, civil rights, equal rights, lgbtq rights, systemic abuse of everyone not part of the silent majority, and the war in Vietnam. Take a performer popular in 1971 and see how many video and audio clips you can align to one of those buckets and you have a mini-series oh and cap it off with Bowie and glam rock because they had a quote of him saying "we killed the 60s"

The music is great and there is a playlist on Apple Music worth putting in rotation (85 songs I think).

Other than a brief mention on Yes and change in musical direction by many, such as they spent some time on Kraftwerk, they left a ton of performers out.

Half of the time the series focused on changes in music and others on the above buckets. I was never sure where it was going, and producers really cherry picked what they thought fit their vision. They focus on the Stones the most of any group, and their time in France in 71 heavily covered.

There is a good mini documentary though imbedded about the civil rights movement, George Jackson, Angela Davis and others but they tried to hard in the series to ties the music to how it changed things as a cause, when the music appeared to me to be a reaction.

Worth a watch for the music and insightful reminders of challenges today existed 50 years ago for many marginalized peoples, but as a series about music changing a year, I didn't get that. Good year for music though!

I put this episode with some of the best the series has ever had - top 10 easily

This episode was better than many movies. Suspenseful, intense, great direction and really original "perspective" on running away and fighting the dead. An original episode.

We did not need this at this point in the story

If you watch TWD and are this many seasons in, you do not need another pseudo, arm chair psych analysis of already very well defined characters. 2 people have a bad day. The end.

Maybe if Dr. Hartley had woken up and told his wife Emily about this strange dream I would have rated higher

Too Dark
17 January 2021
This show really works well when it focusses on the main cast and how they react to both the cases they solve and what's going on in their lives. This episode was so badly acted with fictional motorcycle gangs, almost no focus on main cast outside of Sandra. Although I never think of show as a comedy, there is generally a lighter tone. Did not enjoy.

Terrible
5 April 2020
This episode reminded me of the last episodes of Season 8 of Game of Thrones. So illogical, thrown together mess to tie off the story loose ends. Enough said.

Lost something. . .
30 October 2019
Wife and I were excited to see a new episode on Acorn, but that excitement changed to disappointment fairly quickly. Several major changes to setting, characters, and overall vibe of the show do not align with first couple of seasons. The story/script was disjointed, didn't flow smoothly, and I dozed off before it was over.
