Mulholland Dr. (2001)
David Lynch is a genius.
David Lynch is a genius. Too bad this is a film that only a genius can understand. There were no copies on the shelf of the Hollywood store in my neighborhood, so I grabbed "High Heels and Low Lifes". When there was a copy available at the desk I exchanged them. The Hollywood employee who swapped them said I should have stuck with 'High Heels' because nobody she has spoken to has understood 'Mulholland Drive'. Me neither. But I'm glad I watched. Fascinating stuff.
Kukla, Fran and Ollie (1947)
Loved the Kuklapolitans
This was more than a kid show. If I remember correctly some of the sponsors were Ford, RCA Victor and Life Magazine. I can remember most of the Kuklapokitan Players. Kukla, Ollie (The Dragon), Beulah (The Witch), Mercedes, Fletcher Rabbit, Madame Oglepuss and Cecil Bill (The Sailor who only said "Tooey, Ta Tooey"). I think Ollie had a sister named Olivia. Does anyone remember any others?
The Strange One (1957)
The launch of some brilliant careers.
This film is a real sleeper. It launched some brilliant careers, especially that of Ben Gazzara. But also those of Pat Hingle, George Peppard and Arthur Storch, who became a fine stage director. Look for this one to see some interesting characters and a compelling story.
Pinocchio (1940)
Parents - Beware of a frightening scene in this film
A Disney masterpiece that contains one sequence so frightening it has haunted me since my childhood. I can't recall any little children being killed in a Disney film, but in Pinocchio, they meet a fate far worse than death. Little boys are turned into donkeys. Sure they are naughty little boys who relish the sinful life on Pleasure Island but do they deserve to lose their humanity because of it. This is a film about a puppet gaining humanity and regards it as the most precious gift of all. After seeing it as a child I will never forget the little boy crying "I want my mommy!" and then being turned into an animal. Parents should be careful about letting their kids see this film despite its wonderful characters, animation and music.
