Coco (2017)
Book of Life was first, but this one still stands out
While the concept of Dia De Los Muertos in an animated film has been done before, Pixar as usual shines in on this one as another unique and original tale that shows how family traditions can change and also how music can inspire rather than ignore and how it can be used to create, rather than steal. I'm just a tad disappointed that the studio made it look like they "borrowed" the other film's concept (The Book of Life), yet they still know how to make it fresh enough for even the most skeptic. This one is especially a recent highlight for Pixar knowing that plenty of sequels are being/have been produced before and after this one. I do hope they continue to make original enough concepts in the near future. Overall, this film was fairly straightforward, yet complex enough to keep the audience thinking and for those unpredictable moments.
Logan (2017)
Fairly straightforward, and quite well done
I did not expect Stewart to have such a major role. After Days of Future Past, I thought he was finished with X-Men movies. Jackman still has it as the classic mutant in this final chapter of his character, even after almost 17 years since he appeared in the first Marvel X-Men film. Out of the films that star mainly him, this was probably the best (with the possible exception of Days of Future Past). Overall the film has quite the intense blade-to-blade action, yet still has its subtle dramatic moments and enough surprises to keep the audience stunned. It never really drags on much, even for a film that's almost 2 hrs and 20 min. Long.
The Founder (2016)
Truly captures the real war of business
This was a decent, fairly straight-forward film featuring Ray Croc and his persistent quest in marketing one of the largest-ever fast food restaurant chains. From a food documentary, it's so crazy how McDonald's does business today it's almost sick at times. As for this film, it was certainly a tasty drama about a tasty restaurant. Good acting and film cutting overall. My only real concern with it if anything was the tragic loss of the McDonald's brothers and how their honest and original business simply flopped. It's certainly the truth I'm sure, but still a semi-sad portion of the film. The business world can be cruel, but it's the heart of the franchise that will always stand out.
Twister (1996)
Fun and unique action/disaster film
I'm not quite exactly sure why this film got somewhat low ratings. I agree there may be some slow parts, slightly crummy camera control, and maybe even some cheesy scenes, but the effects are quite good and most of the storyline to me is decently catching. Set in the major tornado areas of the U. S., a crew tries to determine the science of what goes on inside the funnel of one of the most deadliest storms of our time. Success and failure arise, yet the intensity of the storms doesn't stop too soon. Since I saw this when I was fairly younger especially, it feels enough like a childhood classic.
Pete's Dragon (1977)
Not too bad
A little on and off at times, but not too bad overall. Saw most of it once when I was really young, and I was glad to see it fully today. I felt a tad bit bored during some parts, but the animation/real-life mix I must admit is quite good for it's time. Some the story arch could've been improved, but much of the action and special effects were pretty spot-on (not to mention seeing Mickey Rooney on the set). I may not remember the film much as a child, but Elliot has always been a catching character to me. Certainly not the best two hours and nine minutes of a lifetime, but still another decent musical number with an animated dragon to steal the show.
Her (2013)
Not too bad
Fine picture and cinematography when it comes to the actual film itself. Love will always be a mysterious thing, but I believe that when A. I. does become this intelligent, it can help us learn to communicate more thoroughly with the human spirit especially when we may be desperate. Intelligent assistants will agreeably be as useful as they were in the movie, and yet falling in love with one is obviously another story of it's own. I did't feel like I felt the love entirely like other viewers, but as kind of a tech geek, it was definitely really interesting. If A. I.'s like Samantha do inspire us to connect to real people, then our future may be brighter then we think.
Doctor Strange (2016)
A literal misshapen flick
Especially after seeing it at the IMAX for the first time, I must say it was quite riveting. A unique sorcery tale that relates to what goes on beyond what we see while mixing it in with the theory of multiple universes. Cumberbatch plays another soon-to-be marvel hero with yet another slight sense of humor, much like the latest heroes such as Star-Lord and Ant-Man. Marvel continues to head it's way to it's final epic countdown on the Avengers side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For a more recent film, this one I might have to consider at least one of my favorite Marvel avenger films involving a single main hero and not a group. Overall, I would say that even if you're not a marvel fan and/or you're into the psychological/theoretical study of multiple dimensions, it is a real kicker.
The 5th Wave (2016)
Straight forward review
It Started off interesting, okay during the middle, but crap at the end. Overall, it just wasn't worth it much. The effects were spot-on if anything, the acting was good as well, especially from Moretz. The plot was pretty interesting, but its storyline was just bad. It felt like a build-up to something very big and/or interesting, but then it just faded away once the credits came up. It was also strange how they said they were going to do something important at the end, but then we don't see it. The film wasn't poorly boring necessarily, it was just done poorly from a pretty clear perspective.
A Beautiful Planet (2016)
The IMAX experience
We do indeed need Earth. If anything, I'd rather fight for humanity than for other society causes. At any case, if we all really tried to do our part, the Earth can at least tend to last longer. According to this film, if causes like global warming continue to spread, the surface of the Earth could look like Mars if we literally did nothing. This was a nice 45 minute Imax 3D experience visualizing the best way possible of the Earth as seen from space. The storms at night was one of the best moments. With some included space station shots and the astronauts that work there, a good majority of the film is a breathtaking experience with much of it coming from the Imax screening and audio technology. The Earth is Beautiful and it needs to be saved.
The Revenant (2015)
"Revenge is in God's hands, not mine."
Good revenge film, especially one inspired by true events. Also a pretty dang good performance by DiCaprio and one heck of a nominee winner during the 2015 Oscars. The style of filmography with the ideas of using one long shot for most scenes, the very subtle cuts, and the in and out music. Some of the nature scenes were extraordinary, some of the best I've ever seen in a film as such. The ending was a bit unclear to me, but the rest beforehand was pretty straight-forward. This is yet another successful film that hardly uses dialogue and more emotions and expressions (a film like Wall-E being another). This is indeed an "epic adventure of survival."
The Fox and the Hound (1981)
Another one I grew up with
A bit far-fetched with the animation then I remember, but it is a well thought-out story especially for less than 90 minutes and also quite a good childhood classic. While the film has some fairly unnoticeable wit, it still brings out an emotional state well enough to save the show. It is indeed related to real life as sometimes your best friend eventually must go away for a little while and only time may tell for when they may return (a related example can include someone you know going into the army for instance). Pretty good characters overall, a fairly well-developed film, but a pretty unforgettable storyline that only Disney Studios can do. Not to mention a nice country-side setting as well.
The Walk (2015)
Total edge-of-your-seat suspense
Great movie. Would recommend it to just about anyone. While it goes through a more traditional style of film storytelling with the main character narrating himself throughout, it brightens up the mood in the beginning, than leans toward an almost too serious middle, but then an epic end. If anyone in the circus is an artist, than this trick for sure is true art itself. Some of the acting was maybe a bit bland, but it felt enough like how it was during classic times (I was almost guessing that Philippe played himself). Overall, the movie was well mixed together, the visuals were pretty stunning for a film as such, and it's quite amazing how it came out around fourteen years after the towers' non-existences.
Everest (2015)
Overall movie I'd say 3 1/2, but it is based on one of the most tragic real life events ever put on film.
The emotional impact throughout the film didn't feel too strong to me, but the ending before the credits was quite an emotional scene itself even without a moving picture. If you don't really know about the event that occurred, much of it as well as the film was pretty unpredictable as large groups of people in 1996 take on the most daring challenge mother nature has to offer. I don't know if much of the movie or the whole movie was filmed in Everest, but if so, a really big kudos to that. Really big kudos. Either way, this was a pretty incredible film involving love, daringness, courage, hope, and a pretty good emphasis on cooperation.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
IM2
A sequel that improves, but it may not be quite as memorable as the first. Downy Jr. Continues his hilarious role as smart-ass genius Tony Stark in this second edition of one of Marvel's most well-known superheroes. While getting the encouragement to join this so-called Avengers Initiative, he battle's out with what could really be his true fame versus sticking with his comfort zone as a solo worker. As it may turn out, revealing his secret identity may not have been the best idea he ever had. Overall, very enjoyable and laughable much like the first and it continues to build up to what hopefully will be a bigger and better future for Stark Industries.
Iron Man (2008)
A new generation of critical, visually stunning hero films
The first official Marvel Avenger film and also the first film in the Phase I lineup. Robert Downy Jr. Is an outrageous comedic show off that defines his character as witty and yet hysterically selfish. The storyline is well cut and the special effects are incredible. It's not only one of the highest rated marvel films, but it's also a well-defined classic especially for the fans of the comic heroes. While the ending may have been a bit predictable, the rest of the plot was well created and interesting. The origins of the iron man is a pretty memorable one as he is most likely considered the most popular avenger in the squad. One of the best Marvel films overall.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Not what you would expect
Days of Future Past is a swell X-Men film since the original trilogy. It included a very in-depth and complex story that involved the progress of saving the mutant race and restoring peace to the world. Even after his most recent hit major film, the Wolverine once again stars as the primary role during the process of saving the world from certain terror. While the rest of the original cast hardly had any extraordinary roles, the way the overall story was produced was at a level that proved to be interesting and thought-provoking and the end result to the film overall was quite satisfying indeed. Whether it's a new generation X-Men or the beginning of a new era, X-Men: Days of Future Past will certainly be considered one of the highest rated out of the new generation of X-Men filming and special effects.
The Wolverine (2013)
A better Wolverine film
Quite a pinnacle point for the most popular and well-known X-man. Hugh Jackman continues to make his character much stronger and more aggressive than ever before. An adventure taken across to the Asian culture where he puts himself back to the brink and meets a bodyguard who can predict his death. While the overall action wasn't as much hype as Orgins: Wolverine, the jump cuts and fight scenes were a little better. The plot itself was also more interesting as it proves that not every mutant is immortal, even the ones that can heal themselves. The ending lines after the last fight were well satisfactory and the ending cut scene was one not to miss.
X: First Class (2011)
The young X-Men crew
I didn't get much out of it first time, but it did have a fairly decent backstory with Xavier and Erik. The other mutants and their younger versions of themselves did give a pretty good kick to this film. It's swell ending stole much of the show. I found one or two of the mutant's powers a bit underrated and cheesy, like Bashee's scream ability. While I may have first thought that the actor choice for each of the main characters were a bit off, their talent and their character personality acts were more well done if anything. Pretty decent installment overall involving how the X-men name came to be.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
ID2
It's like the Independence Day twentieth anniversary special. It seemed like it was much like the first, yet bigger, at the start of film, but then it did develop to a new enough story. Pretty much all of the head cast from the first film were in this continuation except for Smith. While I wasn't completely engaged for most of it, it ended up being a little more aggressive in a good way near the end especially and it had a decent . Overall, while some of it was mostly like the first film yet bigger, it looks to be heading toward something even more extraordinary possibly in the next twenty years. Okay.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
First film focusing on Logan
It included some pretty decent facts about how Wolverine came to be, but some of the movie's jump cuts were not too well put together which especially includes most of the action scenes making them look a little more like obnoxious blurs. While the acting was clean, especially coming from Hugh Jackman himself, the film may have needed some subtlety. Bits of the plot/dialogue didn't catch me much either. I don't really know what movie effects were like much in 2009, but some of it did seem rather on the dull side when it comes to looks. Other than that the movie certainly didn't feel all that bad overall. Most of the action sequences, especially him fighting after the barn raid, were rather good. While it may have been a rather disappointing release after the first fine trilogy, this one is a solid step-up to the X-Men series film-wise.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
X-Men 3
Easily the most action packed than the previous films, but another swell improvement to the series. The full potential of these mutants is officially brought out as Magneto seeks his final revenge. With the incredible effects and battles, this one is quite a keeper from Marvel and is sure to knock your socks off. The intensity level may be a little much for an X-Men film, and the plot was rather self-explanatory throughout, though the plot itself still continued the flow of the overall story. From other such reviews of this film, I whole-heartily agree on having a thrill and a good time during this one.
X2 (2003)
Like any good sequel, it improves itself well and continues the story nicely
A more detailed and engaging plot and a rather epic and smash ending, especially when comparing it to the first film. Good fight scenes, better action, and the usual subtle humor (a lot more subtle compared to Marvel Avengers films, interestingly). The X-Men group together again with Magneto and Mystique helping out for the first time. Will the two ever officially be apart of them? As expected, they're not just on another rescue mission, but a mission that could potentially save their growing species as well as humanity's. I could almost add another 1/2 to this rating for the usual good sequel achievement. What happened to Magneto is certainly one question that remains.
X-Men (2000)
Quite good
A neat start to what I hear is a pretty popular Marvel series. It was a pretty straight forward action packed flick that featured some neat effects for it's fairly early time it hit theaters. Stuart, McKellen, Jackman and the rest of the bold crew were all portrayed as rare mutants that walk amongst society. A pretty straight-forward storyline throughout the film as the team of mutants known as X-Men try to protect and rescue one of their newer and younger ones from "the dark side" of mutants, with one of the helpers being a new member of the X-men as well. This saga introduction shall continue.
The Intern (2015)
A heartwarming-style comedy drama
A man finds his true passion after his retirement from a phonebook printing company despite his passed-away wife included. Finding out how stressful his female boss can get, he does what he can do to stabilize her, with his older age thus his longer life experience. While there was certainly a least an average amount of laughter, I would consider this more of a drama (a nice one in fact). There was certainly a lot of hype during the e-mail crisis scene, thus making the film more interesting and almost forcing people to pay attention to it again if ever the problem. It's basically a satisfying relaxing comedy with a catching plot. Fairly decent overall.
Sausage Party (2016)
Finally some 3D animated dirtiness
Even as a Pixar and Disney enthusiast, I got enough of a kick out of this film and it is true enough that just because something may be animated don't mean that it's for any age. I mostly feel a 3 1/2, but the extra 1/2 is for that rare and crazy idea for Rogen, Hill, Cera and the others to come up with another raunchy film, yet animated style. While it may have gone a bit further than I thought with the R-rated content, it was overall enough of what I expected. As unexpected, it had an interesting and well unpredictable storyline. The movie itself featured many hysterical gags that you would most likely hear from an adult world with adult talking foods. It also may have been a bit too witty and sometimes a little too carried away, but this kind of idea for a comedy I thought was as clever as it was raunchy, even well before the film was released.
