this version a 3 and the uncut version a 7
12 January 2003
ok i remember seeing this when i was young and it was pretty scary then. I just saw the new release though and its the same as the old one which is cut by alot. there is much more of the orgy scene in the beggining and i dont know why they would not include that in the new version and just rate it r. Overall a fun little b movie that deserves to be seen complete and uncut. im suprised i did not see any other comments about the cuts made to this movie. over all i would give this version a 3 and the uncut version a 7.

Signs (2002)
4/10
the them of faith done for ages 5-7.
9 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Well i just saw signs for the second time on dvd and i must say my opinion has not changed. I think it's way to simple and it's view on faith is way to simplistic and kinda dull and pandering. I like alot of how the movie is filmed though. I think it builds tension well and has some creepy and somewhat scary moments but in the end it's paper thin story just does not give much reason to care. For it to have worked as a thriller it needed to be much more dark and driven in its structure i think.

M Night says he based it on "the birds" and "night of the living dead" and "invasion of the body snatchers(1956)", but it comes across more as "Watcher in the woods" but without all the thrills and violence that watcher had. You think I'm kidding but I'm not. *****Possible Spoilers***** The them of the film which seems to be the ability to regain your faith after tragic things have happened in your life or how people keep faith in thier lives has been done much better in other films. I would say david cronenbergs movie "CRASH" is about how people keep faith in a world that seems devoid of things to trust or believe in. It shows this very well and in a very interesting way without lying to audience with sappy rhetoric. Speaking of which i think "It's a wonderful life" sappy as it is is a much better film about the same thing. It has much more character and feeling than Signs even attempts to. Also films like The addiction and Bad Lieutenant provide questions and answers about lost faith in much more honest terms. I don't know what i was supposed to get out of signs but i would much rather watch invaders from mars myself. if anyone else got something out of this more than the overly simple theme then kudos to you because i dont think the director is clever enough to put more into it and having just watched the documentary with the dvd, called making of signs, he proves my point. Lets hope Mr. Nights next film tries to explore something a bit deeper than this one did. Don't get me wrong the themes of faith and losing one's faith are deep but the way they are treated in Signs is not. A great comparison to find out what i am talking about would be to watch the other films i listed right after signs or better yet watch mike leighs "Naked" that should get ya thinking.

The Most Unrealistic Movie About Male Hustling Ever Made!!!!
25 December 2002
I saw this on cable and thank god i did. I was a male prostitute when i was young and this movie is so way off that i can't believe someone even thought of making it. First off women NEVER hire male prostitutes. It just does not happen except in rare occasions and only from ads in magazines never ever ever off the streets. Whoever thought that girls pick up guys off the street was dreaming. Guys turn tricks for other guys PERIOD!!! Ok having said that it would not be quite so horrible if the acting by the lead was good, but its not its awful and unrealistic. Maybe they should have played this like a fantasy cuz then maybe it would have at least been somewhat entertaining but the only characters who is even worth watching is the gay guy and Daryl Hanna and thats it. If you have to watch a movie about male hustlers then watch "my own private Idaho" or maybe "johns" which is not great but a much much better movie than this piece of crap. I gave this movie 2 stars for the gay dude and Daryl Hanna but other than that save your time and money and don't watch this.

Style and direction over gore and effects.
23 June 2002
This has always been a favorite movie of mine.I just bought the dvd widescreen of this and enjoyed it this time around as much as i did as kid. It's got a great cast and a great story, and while it has some flaws, it's not as stupid as other people who have reviewed it say it is. There is not alot of gore in the film but there is a great deal of tension and atmosphere, and the story is never dull. The science is not realistic and who would expect it to be. I mean it takes place way in the past and its a HORROR FILM! You would think from some of the other reviews that people have posted that they had never seen a horror movie before. You either agree to go for the ride and suspend your disbelief or you rent something else. It's a classic film that deserves a much better rating in my opinion. If you want dead teens or massive effects don't rent this, but if you like hammer flicks and appreciate style and direction in your movies then this is for you. Dont believe the other reviews on here that say its a lousy film. Its a great little film that any horror film buff would love.

Zombie (1979)

Quite Possibly the Best Zombie Flick Ever Made!!!!!!
11 June 2002
I saw this movie at the theater when i was 12 and have never forgotten it. I own the dvd now and before that i owned every vhs copy that came out. I am biased. I love this flick. It made me want to see all of Lucio fulci's other films. Alot of which are great(City of the living dead,The Beyond)some of which are ok(House by the Cemetery,Don't Torture An Ugly Duckling) and some of which are awful(The New York Ripper,Demonia,Manhattan Baby).

The films story is simple. A women goes to look for her father, who is a doctor on an island where unknown to her or her shipmates, the dead have come back to life to eat the living. All of the actors do a fine job with what they are given to say and i even laughed at the bit in the beginning where they pretend to be a bickering couple caught making out on a boat by a night guard. The women are hot.The effects are still great even after all these years and the music is fantastic. Alot has been made about it being a rip off of dawn of the dead but i think zombie 2 stands well on its own. Give this one a try i don't think you will be disappointed if your a fan of Italian gut munchers.

some great effects but overall boring
11 June 2002
I bought this film over two other films i was considering buying and with my limited budget its important for me to check reviews of flicks before i buy them. I cant rent most of the movies i see because i dont have a credit card(for online renting) and they dont carry the films i like at most video stores. I must say that most of the reviews of this film while correct about the effects fail to mention how dull it is. It stars with the main character's wife dying in the hospital and continues from there. I am not giving anything away thats not on the outside box. There are very few murders in this film and they are done with an extreme lack of style. I know that its not a Dario film and i should not expect that but come on. It's not a bad movie though all in all. I mean for this kind of film there are much worse out there. Rent one of Todd Sheets movies for an example of how to make a very bad horror flick. I was just hoping from a little more from the guy who gave us The Grim Reaper, which is not great but its way more than this film.

p.s. The commentary by the main actress though on the dvd is quite nice and almost worth the price of the dvd as well as the very funny commentary from one of the art directors.

Great little alien flick from the 80's
8 February 2002
Ok this is not the greatest flick ever made but its not anywhere as bad as some say and its much much better than comparison movies like predator, which stunk to high heaven, and makes this look like a masterpiece. The acting alone in this is miles above predator. Its your basic alien taking over the earth, or at least a small town. It has plenty of suspense and some good effects to boot, as well as gore. If you want something nostalgic thats worth the hunt you could do way worse than Without Warning.

Saseul (2000)

a very tame film
4 February 2002
I went into this blind since no one else has seen this film it seems. It is about a writter/serial killer who has a thing for a woman next door to him. There are scenes of violence and sex in this film but it could easily be a R rating in America. Compared to some of the other 3 films I have seen out of Asia this is very tame. The acting is not to good here but its not awful and the story is oddly light and almost cornball which is in contrast to the material but it does not come off funny, just kinda off. All in all you could do worse with this kind of film. See any Shannon Tweed film and you will know what I mean.

this new uncut version rocks!
4 February 2002
I saw the cut version of this film years ago and hated it. This new version with the 45 mins added back in is another movie completely. A much better film. A very philosophical horror film that dives below the conscious and trys to awake those demons within. A very effective film.

Crash (1996)
this is the end
14 March 2001
I have read many reviews of this film and i am always surprised to never hear what i think it's about. The revier her by gluong 2 ? I thought he was right about the film being anti-erotic. It is anti-erotic but its very fetish oriented. What i thought the film was about was the lack of purpose in american culture. They feel empty and being american and told happiness is for everyone and in fact is our right, they can't figure out why they are not. they have great bodies, great sex, great houses, great cars, and great jobs but it amounts to an empty dead space inside of them. You can see this is every frame of this movie. It shows with every line about the trafic getting worse and every scene of dialogue where the characters try to connect but know they dont have the words. The next level is not really a next level at all but an extension of the culture we live in. what other than sex do we worship. We worship cars and movie stars and so these thing get combined in a sort of bizarre foreplay and sexual deviance.Nicks, dents, gashes all become parts of a cars flesh. It takes on an emotional identity to the characters. They treat the cars as if they were extensions of themselves and in fact the metal and chrome of the cars does start to become part of some the characters in a backwards way(rosanna). She is part machine. This movie to me is a metaphor for longing. It examines in an extreme way our desire to be filled and not feel so empty inside. The people in this movie live in a deeply religious state and are even willing to die for it. They want to die for it in fact. They want salvation. The people in this movie are consumed with the longing for salvation from their empty lives and the fear its not there at all.

The question people ask alot is why are they so empty? why don't they join a church or something? I think the people in this movie already have gone that route and found it lacking to say the least. I think this movie is far bleaker than most reviews i read so far. I think it is saying. we are headed for the big meltdown. We are driven by desire than cannot be fulfilled. The end result is desire and faith turned into violent obsesion and sorrow without end. A Disapointment so big that it drives you to death. By the way im not this bleak but i thought the movie was. And yes i did like it alot :)

dark, disturbing, and wonderful
14 March 2001
i thought this film was realy great and im amazed to see it here. I saw it at a film festival in san jose, ca. I have always wanted to get this film on video so if anyone has any leads let me know. The film revolves around an abused woman whos final escape leads her down a road she could never have imagined and neither can we the audience. The plot unravels itself from her perspective as she writes down the story on her naked body in a room somewhere. Im not gonna tell you anymore than that except to say it was emotionaly powerful and i would recommend it to anyone who likes dark and powerful films.
