Magnum P.I. (2018–2024)

Magnum Blows, mostly
1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Was a fan of several series that have been rebooted and to be fair, my opinion of them has been taunted by my love of the originals and my comparing the shows and characters to the originals. That being said, l have been able to enjoy a couple by toning down my memories and looking at them through new eyes as new series. Worked somewhat for the Hawaii 5-0 reboot. But less so for MPl.

For one, Higgins SUCKS! Her voice is annoying and her constant nagging and snooty condescending manner is sickening, she comes across as a shrewish mother in law often.

Second, what happened to the narrations by the title character?

Thirdly, most storylines suck or are implausible even for tv.

Fourth, not enough locals, this is Hawaii... Please. Taylor Wily spices up every episode he guests in.

Dharma & Greg (1997–2002)

ROM-COM SIT-COM WITH MANY HAPPY ENDINGS
8 December 2022
Dharma & Greg plays like an extended rom-com with many happy endings. A straight Will & Grace with all the kooky characters and fast paced laughs. This is what Mad About You was aiming for but didn't quite reach.

So hard to believe that Thomas Gibson would play such a wooden character later on in Criminal Minds, hard to believe it's the same guy.

Dharma and Greg are one of the most endearing couples ever on tv, they show the kind of relationship many wish they could have but few ever attain.

The actress playing Greg's mother is very attractive and gets the snootiness and exasperated responses down pat, she was born for roles like this.

A great series for a binge watch.

Starts ok but then stumbles
18 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This series started out rather well. The dynamic between the elder couple worked, reminded me of the elder couple from Rules Of Engagement what with their back and forth. Kenny was somewhat funny, a bit like Winston from New Girl.

The later season's "breaking the fourth wall" bits was innovative.

My faults were the jumbled episodes order and the unexplained disappearance of the other couple and not using enough of minor characters such as Anthony Anderson's, Margaret Cho's and others.

Past the first two seasons the ending of dome episodes seems to pop up suddenly as if the storylines were not fully thought out or scripted.

Dwayne The Tock Johnson Rocks
10 February 2022
Although not as funny nor the dialogue as brisk and witty as Get Shorty, Be Cool does have its fun moments, and for me most center around The Rock's performance as a naive gay bodyguard and budding actor.

Great series & Amy Acker sucks!
12 November 2021
Great series, a hash of Minority Report/Enemy Of The State. The relationships between the diverse characters was endearing. My peeve was Amy Acker's character Root: after the first couple appearances she became annoying...her constant smirking, grinning, smarminess and smug wanna-be-cute attitude became quickly off-putting and l began skipping almost every scene she was in. Enjoyable otherwise.

Started off well then wtf

Warning: Spoilers
Imo, the first season was the best and set my expectations high, but then it began to go downhill in the following seasons. What sucked for me was the silliness of the portrayals of the parade of angels/archangels and the corny cringy smirkiness of the parade of supervillains, the mundane banality of the too many "dream sequence" or alternative reality scenes, the overdone and overwrought conspiracy arcs, the excessive amount of times the supposedly close brothers betrayed or kept vital secrets from each other. My advice: watch the first season and forget the rest.

What the ......????
3 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Take lite versions of La Femme Nikita, James Bond, Mission Impossible, Warehouse 13, throw in various blank faced "agents", the obligatory geeky tech wiz (terribly overdone, especially with the cringeworty monologues), ridiculous gadgets, CLONES!!!, villains who seem to always escape capture or death, and a star with two facial expressions: a blank stare and a pout while sucking in her cheeks. The agents and agencies seem extremely gullible and naive and easily fooled, enemies are not killed when they should be, missions thousands of miles away are carried out at the drop of a hat and the agents usually not sufficiently armed or backed up. Starts off action/espionage ends up supernatural. A glorious mess that should be avoided.

Something's missing
9 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The only thing missing in this series is a laugh track.

Unbelievable that TP thinks he can pull this off as a serious drama. Everything is overblown or overdone, extreme suspension of belief required.

Also, how doesn't the pres ever attend any meetings, press briefings, trips abroad or even leave the WH??? And doesn't the kids ever go to school/college??? Why do the agents look so scrappy, and their weapons bulging out???

Seriously, TP... Get a (writing) room.

Classic 80's!
18 July 2020
Movies and tv series from the 80's basically set the template for later decades to follow, in almost every genre. This has many of the usual bits that showed up in later cop shows: the opening sequence showing the recklesss attitude of the lead, the pissed of police captain or chief, the lead is mostly either single divorced or separated, the lead's disobedience of a direct order to stay away from a case, the lead teaming up with opposite minded partner(s), many crashes, many shootouts, sourfaced henchmen, sarcastic bad guy who a big mansion, etc etc. This also harks back to a period when the music was as important to a movie as the plot, and the music in BHC rocks!!!

Best Role Flip
22 May 2020
While Harrison Ford is the top biller in this, the star and show stealer is the villain: the always pleasing neurotic overthetop Gary Oldman, with his trademark mood swings, along with a delicious Slavic accent. Everything and everyone else is just along for the ride.

Falls short of the movie magic
19 May 2020
Hollywood seems to be either running out of ideas or of creative writers. There has been an extremely annoying trend of serializing hit movies or remaking hit series, and almost always failing at both. This is one of those failures. Those old enough will compare this to the movie and find it coming up short.

The Predator (2018)

Predator goes SyFy
17 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is absolutely the worst of the series. It looks and feels like the project was handed over to the SyFy Channel for a reboot, or like one of those low low budget pre-emptive copy of an upcoming blockbuster (mockbuster I think it's called). The predator and effects seem way cheaper and less impressive . than the original movie. The acting, dialogue, plot all suck. The worst crime: the predator kills everyone in the back of a bus, takes a severed human arm and shows the driver a thumbs up sign when he asks about the commotion.. Like, for real? Is this a spoof of the series, or an audition for a SyFy tv series? Please look at only the first two movies in the franchise and skip the rest, this one most of all.

TRY HARDER OR GIVE UP
30 April 2020
TP continues to half-ass his way through poorly written, directed and produced shows, and expects us to love his shows just because he's black and they're about black people. But he constantly insults our intelligence with his output. He owns a large studio, yet his sets seem extremely low budgets, his apartments, offices etc seem almost like stage play sets. Dialogue, plots and continuity are poorly executed. Imagine that the police comes to arrest a guy in a hospital saying it's for murder and the supposed victim is alive in the very same hospital!

The continuity is very sketchy... it seems like a single day stretches over several episodes and then it's hard to tell how much time has elapsed over a couple seasons.

The most annoying character is Karen's assistant Pam, with her sashaying, ridiculous expressions, hand waving and sing song voice she comes across as a cheap caricature of what a hood black woman is supposed to be.

Why is Andi a top lawyer constantly acting like an airhead from a telenovela? Why are all the girls constantly sabotaging their relationships then blaming it on the guys.

Why is a part black guy playing the role of a white country hick? Why are the girls able to just rush off their jobs for non emergencies so often? Why is no one ever seen watching TV but just sitting on the sofa doing nothing? Why are people constantly popping up at homes and workplaces at all hours like stalkers? Why is Aaron hitting on Karen just after his wife's death and before she's even buried? Why does the airport always look like it only ever has the same one plane and couple passengers? And what's with the weird hairstyles??? Why are people who work in a bank and law firm dressed so inappropriately for the job?

TP needs to relinquish some writing and directing to more talented persons or step up his game. And get rid of the always smug look on his face.

Are We There Yet? (2010–2012)
Funny
21 April 2020
Very funny sometimes, other times bleh. What I like most: the dancing at the start, Kevin's monologues, Gigi's extra large smile and giggles/squeals, . What kicks it up sometimes are the guests/recurring characters Brick Street, Troy, the guy who plays insurance agent/travel agent/loan officer, African park attendant/caterer. And the running gags: Ice Cube's disappearing act (especially when used on him or ignored), Troy's lying about his whereabouts to his mom. And for fans of Half & Half ( which starred Essence Atkins) Telma Hopkins ( who played her half sister's mother on that show) appears now as her mother in law and Obba Babatunde ( who played her father on that show) appears again as her father.

Find the Nuggets in this treasure chest
29 March 2020
A fable inside a comedy wrapped up in moral. This has several gems of wisdom that can easily be overlooked: a little bullying can do tremendous harm; the devil comes to you in many guises and tailors his approach to your weakness; be careful what you wish for as it may not be what you really need to be happy; and many more.

Sinbad Show!
30 November 2019
Sinbad guest stars, but STARS! Totally steals the show, supremely funny without seeming forced the way many sitcom acts seem. This could've been an episode on his own series! Still got the magic...
