Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)
Trying so hard to be s horror flick - but doesn't quite make the grade.
While it is unfortunate that this slow-moving drama plods along with no sense of purpose or design, the real travesty lies in its deception, mainly, impersonating a horror film.
The characters are colorless, sterile and utterly uninspiring. The dialogue is contrived and the action is flat. If Stephen King were no longer with us, he would no doubt be spinning in his grave.
And how unfortunate this all is. This could've been a riveting, frightening ride, but instead it missed the mark and fell flat on its face.
Jaeden Martell's subdued, lackluster approach to his role only added to the starkness of the film. I have always loved Donald Sutherland's acting but I felt he was wasted in this role.
A word to the wise: if you are looking for a compelling action-packed horror flick, move on, as this is definitely not for you. The fear factor here is negligible, and the viewer will undoubtedly feel short-changed.
So, my conclusion? By all means, save your hard-earned money and look elsewhere to get your horror fix. You will be oh so glad you did.
Expedition Bigfoot (2019)
Entertaining but totally frustrating
Every Sunday evening I watch this show. I'm always hoping against hope that THIS episode will be different from all the rest. But I am always disappointed. The only intriguing thing that was captured on thermal camera (so far) was what looked like a Bigfoot walking in the woods. The rest is just fluff.
Ghost Nation (2019)
Disappointed!
I love the original Ghost Hunters. That was a truly groundbreaking show and was the catalyst for all the other ghost shows that have followed it.
However, the new Ghost Nation is a let down. I do love how they delve into the history of each location, but it seems that the outcome is always the same. "Nothing is malicious here and you have nothing to worry about".
One positive thing I will say is they don't over dramatize events and sensationalize things like Ghost Adventures. Could Zak Bagans be any more of a drama queen? This is much more realistic and low-key than Ghost Adventures.
I also miss the chemistry between Grant and Jason. They were a good team together.
The Gift (2000)
Flawless Performances/Engrossing plot
With an all star cast, The Gift is a powerful, moving, must-see drama. The story unfolds in a sleepy Southern town, where Annie, the town psychic, (played by the truly "gifted" Cate Blanchett), does readings for the neighborhood folk. There's only one problem: this is totally taboo in this part of the country.
Everyone's acting is superb, (with the exception of Greg Kinnear, who has the same expression on his face from beginning to end.) A very special shoutout goes to Giovanni Ribisi for his skillfully layered portrayal of the troubled Buddy Cole.
A riveting storyline supported by an exquisite musical score are sure to keep the viewer engrossed from start to finish.
The Gift is most definitely a film to cherish, and a true gift to us all.
