Éger (2023)
Entirely too long for what it wants to deliver
This would have been a rather excellent short film. The monologues are needlessly long, unbroken, thus they devolve into a comedy of themselves. You know halfway where they're going to end up and from then on it's just words piled on words.
Having Kata tell the monologue of Zsolt was the biggest mistake. It breaks the consistency of the movie and the choice adds nothing of value or substance. Was the original actor of Zsolt unable to deliver the delusional monologue of an unloved loser? Or what was the aim here?
The movie should have ended with the fire. The last scenes were eyerolling and just one step too far down drama lane. The fire was an excellent choice. It would have served the movie better to leave the rest to the viewer's imagination.
Otherwise, good idea told poorly. I hope Nagy-Borús Levente builds from this experience and delivers something truly excellent next time. I believe he has the talent for it.
Lost in Space (2018)
Soap opera in space
I was expecting an adventure series, with some sci-fi elements. By episode 4 it's all about artificial drama. The series could have been superb if they dropped the entire Dr. Smith line. It would have been an interesting survival plot. Man vs. Alien planet with a robot quirk that could have driven the plot.
But no, we get human vs. human and once every 3 episodes, there's a 'look a shiny organism now let's go back to how we feel about it'. The series is 90% about a crazy psychopath's plan to outmanoeuvre every other human on the planet. Don't expect science, or fiction, this is a classic soap opera with the evil godmother and the poor trapped family trying to get by.
By episode 5 I was rolling my eyes so often I barely saw the screen. I went and skipped every soap opera scene in episode 7 and I found 5 minutes to watch. I gave up. I know a high-budget soap opera is a hard pitch to sell but that shouldn't mean you can advertise it as a space adventure.
The Witcher (2019)
Superb
Must watch for anyone loving fantasy, not just for the Witcher fans. The atmosphere is splendid, I felt like playing the games again. Or better. It has all the important boxes checked. I expected this to be a so-so adaptation with Cavill doing what he can to carry the show, but the show doesn't need to be carried, it's splendid.
