Great idea, terribly developed.
25 January 2003
The story's idea is brilliant, and innovative. Too bad it has to be reduced to a level of base sexual human behavior(s). The whole tone for the picture was set in the opening scene with the puppeteer manipulating the puppets to perform sexual acts as a child looked on.

The whole idea of someone taking over someone else without regard for the other person is also a bit disturbing, and no one seemed to have any regrets about it, so long as they got to get what they wanted out of the deal. The last scene of the next person who was to be taken over was also depressing.

The movie does not project any sense of respect for human beings.

An interesting and atmospheric movie.
24 January 2003
The mysterious sounding music of the main title when the film starts sets the pace for the whole movie, which is laid-back yet enchanting (especially if watched at night).

It is not hardly a typical space battle type picture so this should not be expected. As a matter of fact this movie shows a much more realistic viewing of what space travel will be like when it finally becomes common place. For example the rockets are propelled by some type of gas, and permission has to be given from mission control before engines are started, and rocket courses and accelerations have to take into account things like planet gravity and possible g forces on the crew.

The main characters are interesting and even though it is overdubbed the dialog is good, with a few exceptions which are fun to laugh at. The acting by Claude Rains is very good, and you can actually feel sympathy for professor Benson, who has nothing to keep him going but science (and Eve though he finds it hard to admit it even to himself).

The story is interesting and has a few twists to it that keep things moving along. The movie also presents an interesting commentary on possible future government-military-industrial and international organization. This movie might not fit everyone's taste, yet people who sometimes enjoy laid-back atmospheric fantasies should enjoy it.

A wonderfully interesting sci-fi movie.

There story makes several surprising turns, so you are often un-sure of where you will be taken next. This guessing keeps the intrigue and suspense at a high level.

The acting and plot are terrific as well as the script. As a matter of fact you need think a little about what is being explained in the story as it unfolds, because the story's explanation says a few things about human (and non-human) nature, and superstition.

It honestly has quite a few chilling moments, and the moments are chilling not because of grotesque special effects makeup(which is what many modern Hollywood movies rely on for chills).

A very intelligent and entertaining movie.

Terrific sci-fi movie. Like wine, gets better with age.

This is a terrific older sci-fi movie. It has all the elements to make it a sold movie; a good variety of characters, an interesting plot, and a solid script. The great special effects are just icing on the cake. Much of the movie is told in documentary style with a voice-over of someone, which adds to the realism.

You can feel connected with the main characters and what goes on in the movie. Even most of the characters that don't have much of a role seem realistic, not two-dimensional (like some in Spider-man). The plot has many viable twists and the movie comes to a exciting and feasible conclusion (un-like Independence Day). Many/most people will find it more entertaining than the "classic" sci-fi invasion movie War of the Worlds.

This movie, even though it was a relatively mid-budget movie made in the 1950's, should serve as a message to modern day Hollywood. It shows how a movie if made with a lot of thought and heart, as opposed to just violence and/or sensualism, can produce a real winner.

Spider-Man (2002)

Very good movie, so-so writing
9 December 2002
Spider-man is a very entertaining movie. The special effect were great. Also, the major characters and acting for them was very good.

Their are a few points that would have made it an even better film. The story plot was good, but the writing was only so-so. My guess is it was written by many part-time or temporary writers, using the recently more often used Hollywood pass-the-script add-or-change-a-little-more writing method that is to blame. Most of the secondary characters and some scenes were very two dimentional. For example when Peter caught his lady love AND all of the things she dropped, none of the students even noticed. None of the students made any big deal of him doing a somersault from a stand-still and then punch a quy twice his size clear across the room (except: "Wow", or "Freak").

Also, when Osbone is given his walking papers at the board meeting, the whole scene and all ot the people there seemed artificially two dimensional and emotionless.

Only other comment is that Spider-man's girlfriend could have been dressed a bit more modestly.

Anyway, overall a very good, and fun movie. If the writing for spiderman II improves it will be an even bigger hit.

A great movie.

There is more to this movie than just the surprise ending. The acting in the movie was superb, I could really feel pity for the child and the mother. Also, there was also a subplot in the movie which also had a surprising twist that was terrific. And after I saw the movie's ending, I had to go back and re-think about all the various scenes I had seen in the movie, and the fact that what I though was happening in those scenes was not really the case, and how the movie script and director was able to pull it off. That fact alone made me want to see the movie again.

Very disappointing.
27 March 2001
This movie took up a very relevant theme, religion vs. science. Yet I felt it was biased towards science from the outset. For example if you look at who you have representing religion: an ex-holy man (who quit being a priest because he could not manage the chastity vow? Of course not all Christian religions require their priests to take a chastity vow.), and a religious fanatic. Also, the alien's own words support her viewpoint. So while this movie takes on a very serious and challenging topic, it does not seem to want to, or be able to, dealing with it with the amount of thought and insight that is required. Also,as a side note I found the portrayal of the presidential security advisor to be very one-dimensional and irritating. Ultimately a disappointing movie.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

A very entertaining movie.
24 March 2001
The movie struck a very good balance between satire, comedy, and adventure. The (good)aliens were very touching, and makes one rethink about the fact that what is taken for granted to be "normal" behavior for one group or society, might not be so for another.

Its also says a lot that you don't even have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this movie. This is one of the movies where it's content is so entertaining that it does not have to resort be overly violent, vulgar, etc... I put Galaxy Quest high on my list of favorite "easy to watch and enjoy" modern movies.
