Leave the World Behind (2023)
Why the bad reviews?????
I do not understand the bad reviews At All! I'm so glad that didn't stop me watching this film. Yes it is long, but I just watched it in two sittings. What's the fuss?! I thought the direction was Tarantino-esque; Interesting/quirky camera angles and similar dialogue style in parts. The music is well done, it helped to build the suspense. I didn't find the story slow, it is suspenseful and had me glued from the start. (Although I had to stop watching to go to a class and I watched the second half later. ) There are a couple of annoying parts where you think, ok they wouldn't do that, or they would have done this by now (being vague to avoid spoilers!) but I can see why those things needed to happen that way to allow the story to play out. I was glad I had read reviews saying that the ending was awful as that prepared me for it. But actually, I really liked the ending. It's kind of perfect. It implies quite well what happens but leaves it to us to decide the detail.
Don't let the bad reviews put you off!
Great Expectations (2023)
Why the bad reviews?!
I do not understand the low rating for this series. It's excellent. It's a reimagining, so if you're a Dickens purist you probably shouldn't watch a 'reimagining'. Or at least don't leave a bad review based on what you think a Dickens tv adaptation should be. Ok rant over. Six hour-long episodes of atmospheric drama. The main characters are brilliantly cast. Script and acting are strong. Yes, Olivia Coleman does her usual style, but it fits Mrs Haversham perfectly. Mr Jaggers brings a great new angle to the character. Don't let the bad reviews put you off (unless you prefer traditionally adapted Dickens of course, in which case there are plenty of other versions to choose from).
You People (2023)
It's very good and very bad all at once
This film has soo much potential. Some great actors, some great script and in parts it is genuinely very funny. However... It goes too far and tries too hard. The extreme of the would-be in-laws is too much. There are too many very cringey parts that means too many uncomfortable moments for the film to be properly enjoyable. And there some tired (kinda offensive) 'jokes' - for example when a woman's wig is accidentally pulled off. That said, the main couple are believable and likeable, the podcast side-kick is brilliant, some (some!) of the topics and discussions raised are interesting and topical (others a bit tired and cringe). I thought this was a series, and was just going to watch the first episode to see whether to bother, ended up watching the whole film on a Saturday morning. I enjoyed the start and the end. The middle was too cringe and if it had been a series, I probably wouldn't have made it past episode 2. Worth a watch on a lazy Saturday morning, not soo much a fun Saturday night.
The Cupcake Guys (2023)
It may get better
I wanted to like this; three guys, ex footballers, baking cupcakes.... but the acting is soo bad! The 'real life' situations are clearly set up (as is normal with these types of reality shows) but because the acting is bad, it's painful to watch. I hope it gets better as they relax into it, as it could be good fun.
The show is out for free on Roku and I think all episodes are available. Will I carry on watching to see if it improves? I doubt it! There are soo many other better things to watch. The cakes did look good though! If anyone watches, it will be good publicity for their business. Maybe I'll go bake cupcakes instead...
