Mulholland Dr. (2001)
David Lynch Triumphs Again!
I saw "Mulholland Drive" for the first time last night, and I loved it. The only thing I didn't like about it was that once it ended, I wanted more! I really like the characters, shots, and music. This another example of David Lynch's beautiful filmwork. Betty & Rita work well together. As my wife said this morning, if you like David Lynch, you'll love this movie - if you don't like his previous work, don't see this. I'm a big fan of all things Lynch, and she isn't really. I'm going to see the film again on Friday. Starting Friday, it's running here for a week. I'm going to try to see it as many times as I can while it's here! This is definitely another Lynch film that's not spelled out for you. I don't believe you can fully understand everything that happened in one viewing, or the connections between all characters. Everyone was wonderful in this film, and I applaud David Lynch. I'd like to see more of this material on the eventual DVD. Since it was originally shot as a pilot, I hope that leaves room for more new footage to eventually see the light of day in a DVD or sequel film release. I felt the film flowed nicely and didn't necessarily reflect any indication of it's being shot as a pilot for television. Amazing. Where can I pre-order a DVD?!? : ) 5 Star Film. See it.
Soy Cuba (1964)
Stunning and beautiful - Amazing film!
Fantastic cinematography. For fans of brilliant filmmaking, black and white film, or just stunning visual imagery, this is a must-see! It's not often that a film can kick my ass, as I'm difficult to impress with film and music, but this one did! I must thank Francis Ford Coppola & Martin Scorsese for getting the rights and helping it see release. Great music...this film is nearly perfect! I've read reviews by people who were disappointed with the transfer, but with film this old (1964)what do you expect? I rented the videocassette for my first viewing a few years back, and when I saw it would be available on DVD I pre-ordered it immediately! Thanks must also be given to Image Entertainment for constantly bringing amazing film to the public. From the opening credits, you're staring into eye candy. One of the most beautiful films you will ever see. Do it now.
Waiting for Guffman (1996)
Makes the Top 10 Funniest List
Let me start by saying that I believe Christopher Guest is our funniest living comedic talent. I love everything I've ever heard or seen him in, which includes the cast of Saturday Night Live, as well as National Lampoon Radio Hour (Find "That's Not Funny...That's Sick!" on vinyl). I loved this film the first time I viewed it, and it remains new and funny each time I view it. I've probably seen it 35 times by now and can't wait for it's release on DVD, coming August 21st! Stellar cast, great story, charming community (Blaine). Another reason I love this film is that the majority of what you see is improvisational, a la "This is Spinal Tap" and "Best In Show". Christopher Guest & Eugene Levy are amazing on their own, but together they've struck gold! I am disappointed that it's taken this long for it to see a DVD release and that "Best In Show" made it to DVD first, but regardless, the wait will be worth it! The "mockumentary" style has been perfected with these films. I have a rough cut of the film, which looks awful but has lots of extras not in the theatrical release. The DVD should have the same amount of extras as "Best In Show", as well as audio commentary by Christopher and Eugene. I love this movie. If you don't like it I wonder what you could possibly find to be funny. This is among my Top 10 Funniest films of all time, which includes "This is Spinal Tap", "Best In Show", "Blazing Saddles"...ahh U get the idea. SEE THIS FILM if U have a sense of humor. If not, please don't. : )
Seul contre tous (1998)
Amazing French cinema from Gaspar Noe
I read before viewing this film that this would be a dark, heavy film that may be difficult to view. That's what I wanted, and that's what I got! I was taken by the shooting, acting, colour, and the anger inside of the main character, which I could relate to although that guy's way more messed up than I am! It's now on DVD and I need to get it. Brettnoth of Seattle WA wrote : "This movie is simply THE WORST FILM I've EVER seen, and openly glorifies, amongst other things, PEDOPHILIA, INCEST, and VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN." If this is the worst film they've ever seen I'm wondering how many movies they have seen! I did NOT feel that it glorified pedophilia, incest, or violence against women. It's a dark film, a glimpse into the unhappy life of one man in particular. So, my question is "Do things such as pedophilia, incest and violence against women exist in reality? If so, does their depiction automatically mean that they're viewed as good things or "normal"? I don't think so. If you read the warning on the box before renting, you'll probably end up not renting it. That's fine. More great cinematography for those of us willing to taste something new. If you're expecting "When Harry Met Sally", please rent something else instead of getting this, knowing it's going to be dark, then trashing it because you don't "get it". I'd be interested to see how much people who disliked this hated "Requiem For A Dream", "Dancer In The Dark", and anything by Alejandro Jodorowsky. For pure, dark, French cinema, check this out...if you think you can handle it.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Best Film of the year 2000
I can't wait for this DVD! Amazing. Ellen Burstyn should have taken the Best Actress award home instead of Julia. Great shots, great cast, great soundtrack by Clint Mansell. Thanks to Hubert Selby Jr. for writing this amazing story. Too bad the academy is soft and couldn't consider this for Best Picture. Darren Aronofsky's new Batman film is gonna be dark, and I can't wait!
