The Martian (2015)
Entertaining but too dissimilar from the book
I enjoyed it but Matt Damon's portrayal of Mark Watney was emotional without the counterbalance of his great positive attitude. I just enjoyed the scientific approach of the book a lot and was disappointed that so many things were taken out or changed. The book focused on Mark being able to break problems down into steps and solve each step one by one until he could do something that the average person would find impossible. He has to be clever and quick and determined. He does so not begrudgingly but almost resignedly. He just goes and goes and goes, like the problem itself is the reason to solve it, not just that he's trying to survive. He trusts his mind and abilities. In the movie it's just disaster disaster slap some duct tape on it and luckily that works.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
THE Horror Movie
First time watching this film and I'm pleasantly surprised. I've grown up hearing about it and I always thought it couldn't really be as creepy or impactful. Surely it was actually obviously fake. But I was wrong. The acting is so good and everything that happens and their reactions are realistic. It's not over the top but just right.
I would watch this once a year. I wanted a behind the scenes video after to get less scared but they don't exist because they were so dedicated to it being real.
If I was a movie seeing person at the time it came out I would have never left my house again. But alas. I have to leave my house.
Nine to Five (1980)
Still making Dolly fans in 2020
I just watched this movie for the first time in 2020. I haven't laughed so hard from a movie in some time. I loved all of the performances. It's depressing that a lot of what they had to fight against is still happening in 2020 but it's a great reminder that there are smart, talented, ambitious people whose legacy we carry on by fighting for equality.
As a casual fan of Grace & Frankie it was really fun to watch Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin working together back in 1980.
Honestly, this movie has it all. Dolly's amazing songs, the comedic timing of Lily Tomlin, the Justice of Jane Fonda, friendship between women, getting revenge on a horrible tyrant of a man. If you think you are too good for this movie, think again, this movie is too good for you. I am on the Dolly train to Dollywood.
