Clerks III (2022)
Kevin's Best Work
This movie was perfect. It's normally pretty difficult for a filmmaker to make mostly comedic movies then release an all out drama. This movie, unlike most of Kevin Smith's films, was 70% drama and 30% comedy. The movie really centralizes on Randall, but Brian O' Halloran steals the show! This movie shows the true pain of loss and what it's like to look death right in the eyes. I felt for the dynamic duo in this one. It's been years since I've cried in a theater, or even cried for a movie period for that matter. The third act of this movie will blow you away. Incredible performances across the board and an awesome soundtrack. I'm at a loss for words. Truly, it's Kevin's best work. Regardless of whether or not you're a fan of his previous films, this movie will hit you, and you'll feel it.
Barbarian (2022)
Too Many Loose Ends
Before I dig into what I didn't like here, I'll discuss what I thought was good. Cinematography as a whole was excellent, some of the best in a long time. Soundtrack was also great. The first act of this movie was incredible. If the goal was for us not to know whether or not Keith was good or bad, they succeeded. The suspense and tension was certainly there. But then, we get into Act 2. This is essentially where this whole thing fell off. Below are a series of questions that never got answer.
- Why did the double booking happen? Was it just a happenstance plot device that was the only way the story could occur?
- Why did the rental company deny that Keith and Tess were there once AJ showed up?
- Why did the person conducting Tess' job interview say that the area Tess was staying in is one she should not be in? It had a very sinister tone without a real purpose. Maybe she just thought a girl shouldn't be alone by herself in a rough area.
- What about the guy who originally lived in the house? Was all that just to give context to the camera room and such? Why'd he have 10 minutes of screen time to himself if he was gonna go out the way he did?
- Was the house haunted by ghosts or just the energy of this monstrous lady living in the underground below the home?
These are just a series of loose ends.
Ultimately, the movie had SO much potential and had a perfect setup. The tension was right, the suspense was perfect. The acting was great across the board. They knew when to blend comedy into it. I just didn't like the fact that they had so many good potential plot devices that the writers just forgot about.
The Batman (2022)
Absolutely Incredible
Robert Pattinson is THE Batman. I really like how they approached this movie. They did it "dark" like it was intended to be. The score was immaculate, Riddler, Catwoman and Penguin were great. The cinematography was also awesome. They not only made Batman exist the shadows, but Bruce Wayne too, which is something the other movies didn't really do. The opening 10 minutes is some of the best cinema I've ever seen. This movie also has some of the best Batman moments ever. Awesome addition.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Halloween Kills (Itself)
Truthfully and to be blunt, this movie just wasn't good. The acting was awful in 90% of scenes. The kills were cool, but you could see the same thing in a Dead By Daylight Kill Compilation on YouTube. It added next to nothing to the plot and was entirely too reliant on overly gratuitous kills. Granted, the flashback scenes were excellent, as well as adding a near identical Dr. Loomis lookalike. Even though these scenes were good, they were overshadowed by the awful acting in them. This movie might be worth the watch if you've invested time into all 49 other unnecessary Halloween sequels. Other than that, pass.
The Hangover (2009)
Incredibly funny.
The film almost seems like non-stop laughter, and unlike most modern comedy, it has an actual standing plot and isn't filled with forced comedic attempts to make you laugh.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Be excellent to each other!
Solid movie. It wasn't AS funny as the originals but very good-hearted. The best part of the film is its message to "Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!" It's a message that stands the test of time. Enjoyable for sure.
The Deadbeats (2019)
Grindhouse Vibes
This movie was really good, especially for 2019 when not many movies are up to par. It has an immense Grindhouse feel to it, almost Tarantino like. Mr. Patch's actor delivers a great performance along with the "Deadbeats". The ending is of the top ten strangest endings I've ever seen, very abstract. The Deadbeats was a solid movie, go check it out.
