The Me You Can't See (2021)
Much needed
Different types of suffering coexist. Wealth and social status do not make you immune to suffering. The show had been powerful and groundbreaking. There's a lot of cruelty out there. The mainstream media's treatment towards Meghan and Harry has been sickening. The insistent bullying towards a pregnant woman who has experienced feeling suicidal sends an awful message towards other people struggling. I admire Harry for being courageous enough to use his platform and share his truth. He has revealed the ugly side of the establishment and mainstream media. I hope that the series will be on an easily accessible channel in the future. I really think it needs to reach the masses!
Moxie (2021)
Much needed for young people
The movie pulled me in from the start. Lucy's character is fearless and refuses to shrink and mould herself to other notions of who she should be. I would have loved to have seen Lucy as the main protagonist. Her character is intriguing and deserves a more significant story arch. The film has a refreshing approach to the high school movie genre. It captures some of the changes that are happening right now amongst young people who are far more socially aware than their predecessors.
The Bold Type (2017)
Awful show avoid unless you want to loose brain cells
Awful, formulaic and poorly acted. You will feel dumber and less insightful after watching this nonsense. Save your valuable time and energy! I'm sure that the positive reviews have been bought or were written by the filmmaker.
Us (2019)
Boring
I had high hopes for this film, but felt extremely frustrated and drained 10 minutes in. I gave it another 20 minutes and had to switch it off. I was expecting a lot more from Jordan Peele.
Death to 2020 (2020)
Lacking
When I heard about this show I was excited. I'm a fan of black mirror and also Charlie Brookers Screen and Newswipe, I was hoping for something along these lines. This show was however a huge let-down. The humour felt very simplistic and forced. It seems as though Samuel L Jackson hadn't got the memo that this was a comedy and just seemed to be himself. This was contrasted with other actors playing over the top not very funny characters. There wasn't the depth, or as another commenter mentioned cerebral style that I would've expected. The show feels like a reminder of why this type of satire is dying. There's so much content online that does satire much better.
Bridgerton (2020)
Cringeworthy and embarrassing
What is the point of this show in 2020/21? It has nothing to offer except for being a awful version of a Jane Austin novel. The writing is poor, the script awful and acting stunted. I'm black British and found it too cringey to watch.
Social Distance (2020)
A brilliant a realistic portrayal of lives during lockdown
I enjoyed this series and resonated with how the characters deal with lockdown and current social events. The show captures the subtle differences that exist among generations and how age influences how we relate to technology. The acting was great and the script well written. Its strange seeing the awful views left on here, it seems that some people cant tolerate a diverse cast and stories from diverse perspectives.
Lovecraft Country (2020)
A brilliant show
A brilliant and intriguing show which is full of unpredictable twists and turns. You may need to hang in there for 3-4 episodes to really understand the depth and meaning behind the story telling. It's not just a sci-fi and horror series. This show will give you a glimpse into some of the horrors of racism in the segregation era. Sci-fi and history are intricately woven together. Each character is on a journey of finding themselves in this bleak world. The episodes which showed histories cruelty bought tears to my eyes. The journeys of each character felt spiritual and insightful. People who are downrating this show seem to have a problem with acknowledging the racism and prejudice shown in this show. Given the current climate in the world right now, they could do with opening their eyes... but most likely never will.
Pose (2018)
A show that is much needed at this time.
Thank so much to the makers of this show and it's brilliant cast. It's so rare for us to see the lives of queer and trans people of colour on our screens. Pose shows us the creativity, strength and ingenuity of the ballroom scene. I love Blanca character, her strength and compassion are heartwarming. The show models what family means. I've cried so much throughout season 2.
Sex, Explained (2020)
An informative series that brings awareness to rarely openly discussed topics related to sex and sexuality.
A refreshing series which approached topics that are rarely discussed in mainstream media. Information is condensed into 15-25 minute episodes. It provides understanding around what influences our fantasies and where attraction comes from. Sexualities that go beyond heterosexual are included. I found the episode on birth control informative and hadn't realised how exploitative and murky the history is. I hope the makers will include more episodes on love, relationships, sexual health. It was disappointing to only hear about consent within the context of BDSM as it applies to vanilla sex as well.
