Chasing Papi (2003)
Really cute movie!!
I have to give it an 8 because I absolutely love Eduardo & Sophia!! It's the first time I was introduced to them!!! The scene with Cici dancing with Tomas is breath taking!! I agree that Eduardo comes across as stiff but to me that makes him even hotter. It's like he doesn't realize how hot he is. He's one of those men who looks better NOT smiling.
To me, Tomas came off as a guy who really did like all three women. He was genuinely interested in them!! He wasn't just looking for a piece of A... That's what made the film so sweet. Even the dog had a crush on him!! Some of the jokes that I really enjoyed were when Fala & Cici were talking about Cici going to LA & Fala says "Get your toes done!!" When Cici sees the woman detective & says with her nose crinkled up "She's not that hot!!" It was so sincere & sweet.
My favorite scene I think aside from the dancing is when Tomas is walking in the airport & the old black woman drops her suit case handle. Tomas leans down & hands it to her in one swoop & she says "where were you in 32!!" OMG I love that scene!!! He's one of those men you can just stop & stare at forever............
I lived in Miami for a bit so I think it takes an appreciation of Latino culture to be able to enjoy the movie!!! Whenever I answered the telephone in Miami with my mid western accent, people would exclaim!! You speak English!!!!!!!!!! ' The movie is very G rated with tons of T & A & blonde extensions!!!
The Secret World of Haute Couture (2007)
Engaging if you're into frocks!
As a previous poster said one would think by the show's description that one could be envious of the women who spend tens of thousands on a dress that they'll wear only a couple of times.
Margy Kinmonth's delivery was wonderful! I loved that we got to experience her first haute couture moment ie. when she got to actually try something on.
I didn't know that if a woman can get into the same size that the model wore she gets a %30 discount!!! I guess that's worth dieting for. Unfortunately, even if I could fit width wise I'd still be 2 feet too short.
If you really enjoy flipping through Vogue you'll like this show. It's like Vogue come to life!! I showed the beginning of this show to my husband and he said he wished he could spend that much on clothing for me....ahhhhhhh a gal can dream!! I can not remember the name of the woman who's from Texas. The glee in her face as she spoke about her love of couture was just infectious!!! I was really impressed by the look of the women. Sure these women aren't 22 or 32 but they are impeccably glamorous.
I come away from watching this show with a mind to do better, to dress better. Haute couture is not in the cards for me as such but I can strive to dress in something that actually fits and not just something that I've managed to struggle into.
Misunderstood (1984)
Spoiler
I take exception to the person who posted the snarky review that the Mom dies, the dad can't fill her shoes & nothing much else happens. I feel that the pivotal moment of the film is after the boy falls & his dad actually requests his schoolbooks to help him with his essay. The essay goes something like this "My dad is my favorite person he always understands when I'm sad..." The dad reads the essay & the boy explains he can't finish it. The young boy says "You never listen, you never understand." The courage it took for him to actually tell his father that and the courage for the father to actually listen & cry and say he was sorry that's monumental. Any child/adult who's had problems with their parents just melts at that moment. All of the little wounds that this boy must endure build up. This is what makes a childhood. If you're told all of the time you're not important. It really kills your soul.
My husband & I watched this & he cried because he misses his own family. I cried because I never really had a family to miss. I don't know which is worse. Being a million miles away from the loving family that you know or growing up never being connected or understood by those in your household? This movie is powerful. If you prefer not to watch movies that make you cry then I don't recommend it. I don't understand why this doesn't come on cable? I had to buy a copy of the VHS tape.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
I was waiting for this
I happened to see the previews for this movie at the movie theater. The previews came later to my cable box. I was delighted. I actually missed the movie in theaters and cursed myself. I was delighted again when this movie came to the town where I live. I thought I'd like the film based on the punk rock music angle used and the costumes. I wasn't disappointed in that respect. I love the scene where whatever his name is seduces Marie to the music of Adam Ant!!!! Hilirious!!! I can see why people say the movie lacked. I suppose it did but I didn't go to the film with the thought that I were going to view a PBS recreation drama. I'd leave that up to PBS. I go to movies to escape my hum drum life and this film succeeded in that regard. If you want to know the "facts" pick up an encyclopedia or look on Wipekedia they'll fill you in.
The only negative thing I can say about the movie is that the dialogue was sketchy in that it was spoken in such a hush that most average people couldn't hear it. I know that was done for effect but I found it annoying that I KNEW most people couldn't hear what was being said during the eating scenes.
The Sensible Thing (1996)
I really enjoyed it
I don't really know why this story touched me but it did. I suppose it has something to do with how the story was described. It's about that one great love that you have. Things may or may not work out. If they do work out you know that the love you feel at first will never last so even though you two may be together there's a sadness.
If you like British or costume drama you'll love this story. I found the characters very compelling. There is a good article about how the story was made on the PBS website. I found it all very interesting. If you long for the days when women were courted in their living rooms then this movie/story is for you.
Sweet 15 (1990)
Really Sweet Poignant Story Very Timely
For anyone who's ever had to deal with immigration this story will tug at your heart strings. A young girl is preparing for her 15th birthday. Her father she finds out is an illegal so she works to help him out. Boy, they don't make television like they used to. This was a really good story that was clean. Why won't Hollywood make decent film like these anymore?
There are a lot of good life lessons in this show. I recommend this to anyone especially parents with children who want to show them wholesome shows without all of the sex & violence in today's movies and television.
ABC Weekend Specials: Cougar! (1984)
Sweet Old Fashioned Yet Exciting Story
I remember this being on television from the time before we had VCR's. This show came on several times I think on Saturdays. I had such a crush on the lead male character, Albie, Matthew Vipond. This story is even more poignant because like most of us children of the 80s my parents were divorced. What gal wouldn't love to have a big brother like Albie who'd even fight off a wild cougar for us.
Basically this young girl and her older brother have to make it down river. Somehow their house becomes afloat and a cougar is trapped in the next room with them. What will they do? Feed the cougar, let it die or kill it?
