The Shepherd of the Hills (1941)
An interesting story, coincidentally given the same title as Harold Bell Wright's famous novel
I found this to be an interesting, compelling story. I'd be curious to know where the producers of the film came up with it. It was certainly not based on Harold Bell Wright's novel "The Shepherd of the Hills", despite their use of the book's cover in the opening sequence, and of like-named characters throughout the movie.
I didn't dislike the film, and I would recommend it to anyone as an enjoyable work. I would also recommend, after having watched it, to find a copy of Wright's book "The Shepherd of the Hills" and read it as well. It's quite a good story, too. Don't worry about the film giving away the ending of the book - there's no resemblance between the two.
Metropolis (1927)
Eagerly awaiting the real Director's Cut
Of course I'd seen Metropolis before. Parts of it certainly, but I'd actually seen the whole movie. But until I got my hands on the 2001 restoration from the Friedrich Murnau Stiftung, I had not seen enough. Having viewed that version, complete with outlines of the missing scenes, I got my hands on Von Harbou's novelization (it's public domain, and available at many different free e-book sites), and learned how much more there is to the story than could even be fit into the first version of the film.
Now a fully copy of the original 'Director's Cut' has been found in Argentina, and is in the hands of the Murnau Stiftung. I can't wait for the release of this truly restored masterpiece!
