The Man from Earth (2007)
Landmark Science Fiction - Not To Be Missed
Just finished watching The Man from Earth a few minutes ago. My first impression was just WOW. Early on in this film though, the acting felt a bit poor, as in not very convincing. However, that soon changed as the film progressed, and I started to realise what a clever movie this really is. Only after a few minutes the excitement started to build up. At this point TMFE really "owns" you, and just won't let go until the end. It's clever because it never really lets you in on all the secrets, there's always a little shadow of doubt.
I believe the movie could be put into comparison with a magic night which you never want to end. Exactly that is how I felt towards this movie. It was captivating, from beginning to end.
Moreover, this motion picture felt a bit short. Maybe John could have been developed further, maybe it could have gone deeper. I also thought it ended a little bit too soon and I was not entirely satisfied, despite the ending being plausible. Although I guess it had to follow Jerome Bixby's screenplay? That said, I must underline that the excitement that engulfed 99% of this movie outweighs the limited runtime. Overall this is an excellent movie that discusses important topics and really gets your mind working. I will certainly watch it again many times to come.
Kudos to the makers of this film. It was about time a science fiction movie of this type was made! I'm also thankful that you demonstrated that science fiction can be so much more than space ships and ray guns to the general public. I might even get some of my friends who are die hard non-SF fans to watch this. It is probably the best science fiction story since The Matrix. Very well done. 8/10
The Gauntlet (1977)
One of Eastwood's better action films
My opinion is that this is one of Clint Eastwood's better action
movies. The action sequences are straight-forward, but
sometimes they are somewhat overdone and it feels like if this is
one of the action movies with the most bullets fired.
Sometimes the action sequences are pretty dumb and you are of
the opinion of that they could have been made better. Despite that,
it is very forward-moving and never really pauses. Eastwood himself is very good (he usually is), as the quite slow
cop Ben Shockley, who is sent out to do what seams to be a minor
assignment. The casting of Sondra Locke as Gus Malley was not
the best choice though. She does not do a very good job in the
movie, at least not in the beginning, but there is nothing wrong with
her looks. Pat Hingle as Josephson, Shockley's friend and partner
in the movie, was rather good. It's a rather OK film to watch even
for those who are not Eastwood-fans.
Almost an Angel (1990)
Enjoyable and warm
Just like Crocodile Dundee this is a humor-packed film from beginning to end. Paul Hogan is as charming and charismatic as ever and the jokes are at five minute-intervals, enough to make it a somewhat serious (and sad) film.I am glad I stumbled across this film, as I think you will be.
Showtime (2002)
Comedy with no real laughs at all
Showtime is supposed to be a comedy but there is really no funny material in it. Even great actors like Robert De Niro, Eddie Murphy and Rene Russo fail to deliver in this so-called comedy. It is just plain dull. Only for the really bored.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Surprisingly good
Basically about four teenagers who all have the same dream of being murdered which is caused by something their parents did in the past.
When I saw the very beginning of A Nightmare on Elm Street yesterday I thought: "Great..., yet another slasher-movie." But I was soon to change my mind as the film ran. The very idea of the murderer existing in the teenagers dreams and that injuries/wounds which are obtained in the dreams transfer to the real world is brilliant.
I must say that I am impressed with Heather Langenkamp's performance as Nancy. Also Johnny Depp was good in this very early role of his. It was fun to see him here before he became an established actor. Robert Englund was superb as Freddy Kreuger and he really did look evil! The film itself was only partly scary but the excitement lasted throughout. The gore was at a reasonable level, because in my opinion even slasher-movies can be too gory. I feel that the music was good but not great which prevents me from giving this a higher grade as music is a crucial part of horror-movies. Having said this, I have to give A Nightmare on Elm Street a well-deserved 7/10.
Ying xiong (2002)
A work of art
I found this film very beautiful and fascinating. The fight scenes were a lot better than in most films these days. I also think the landscape was impressing. I am beyond words really. My eyes were glued to the screen for almost the entire film. See for yourselves.
You've Got Mail (1998)
Strongly recommended film
This is a film which I have seen numerous times. It is just as good every time. The story is of course unrealistic but the film gives off warmth and happiness. It is both funny and romantic. Hanks and Ryan are as good as ever in this modern adaption of the 40s original The Shop Around the Corner. I strongly recommend this one.
Dances with Wolves (1990)
Beautiful and unforgettable film for anyone to see
Dances with Wolves is an amazing movie. It is mainly about the American soldier Lt. John Dunbar who is tired of the Civil war and wants to die and tries doing just that...but he fails with that and instead he becomes a hero. He is, at his own request, transferred to a deserted fort and his stays there while waiting for reinforcements. After a while he makes friends with some Sioux Indians...
This is a very beautiful film, which despite the violence and bloodshed shows an amazing landscape and gives a true picture of the Indians and the white! Even though the films is long it is never boring and you wish it would never end. Graham Greene, Kevin Costner and Rodney A. Grant are all outstanding in their respective roles, especially Greene who you really "was" his role as Kicking Bird, instead of acting it.
I urge anyone to see it. Young or old. Boy or girl. A totally unforgettable film! 10/10
Multiplicity (1996)
Very entertaining and funny!
Michael Keaton's character Doug is so busy with his work that the neglects his family. Then he meets a man who says he can help him with time. Doug is unsure at first but later on contacts the man again, whereupon he learns that the above mentioned is into cloning people! This is when all the fun starts... :)
This film started out a bit slow but got funnier and funnier as it went by. I never thought it would be this funny. It's also a very entertaining film where there is not too much time between each laugh. And the ending is absolutely hilarious!!
Andie MacDowell was stunning as usually. Keaton was good in all of his multiple roles! Need I say more? 7/10
Taxi 2 (2000)
Almost funnier that the first film
Almost as funny as the first film
I laughed almost through the entire movie. In fact, this movie is just as funny as the first one, if not funnier! It's good to see some really good European films for a change. I strongly recommend this film for obvious reasons.
A must. 7/10
Tuff Turf (1985)
Okay low budget movie but too long
Morgan (Spader) makes enemies with a gang the night before his first day in his new school. It appears that 'the gang' goes to his school. The day after they want revenge for the night before and get it by driving over Morgan's bike. And quite soon there is some magnetism between the gang leader's girl and Morgan...
Can't say I was bored watching this movie but I thought it was a little bit too long. I got to say it started out as a promising movie but it showed towards the end that the budget was pretty low. 5/5
Can't Buy Me Love (1987)
Film that can handle repetitive viewing and makes you happy!
The movie is about a guy called Ronald who is something of a nerd.
Ronald has a crush on the most popular girl in school. When she goes to a party a guy accidentally splashes some wine on her clothes, which are her mum's, and which she strictly is not allowed to borrow. The wine cannot be washed out...so she has to buy a new set of the same clothes. But it's way to expensive so she becomes desperate. Then Ronald sees her and pays for the clothes. In return she has to pretend to be his girlfriend...
I got to say that this is a film I never get bored of despite having watched it over and over again. Amanda Peterson who plays Cindy does a pretty good job as does Patrick Dempsey as Ronald. Sure, this movie is not exactly unpredictable but it makes you happy which I think is very important in movies. 8/10
Friday the 13th (1980)
Was scared through most of the movie the first time I saw it
Spoilers herein.
I found this film pretty scary the first time I saw it. Me and my friend had turned off all the lights and everyone had gone to bed. So it was pretty dark except for the TV. And it had its effect.
I was REALLY scared through most of the movie. What more to say..yeah I liked the ending when Adrienne King killed Mrs Voorhees. It was really satisfying to say the least. It's almost interesting to see characters that seem to be pretty week in the beginning of the film toughen up as the movie goes along. Scary first time but no good for repetetive viewing. My grade will have to be 6/10.
Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)
Fun, interesting and cool!
I was totally surprised when I saw this movie. Because I had expected it to be no good. I couldn't be more wrong. It's a fun, interesting and cool movie. Sure the acting isn't superb, but it doesn't have to be. All the other atmosphere more man make up for that. Cage's best performance since The Rock..that's for sure.
Spider-Man (2002)
Doesnt leave much more to wish!
When I rented this film yesterday I saw it twice because I thought it was so good. The film is forward-moving and you are never bored. It also doesn't leave much more to wish. Both Dafoe and Maguire were great in their respective roles as was Dunst. Willem Dafoe did a great job as Green Goblin!! He didn't act GG. He was GG!! And the ending. Perfect.
I highly recommend this movie. But one gotta admit that it's always fun seeing people in their mid 20s playing teens :P
Men in Black II (2002)
A few laughs but that's it!
Wish they hadn't made this one. Many things felt like you had already seen them in the first film. I was not entirely bored when watching this..but one could wish for a great deal more really. OK, it had a few laughs, but that's all there is. I don't recommend this film.
Unbreakable (2000)
Gets better and better every time you see it
I didn't like this film much when I saw it the first time, but I have started to like it more and more after every viewing. It's not perhaps a very fast-moving movie, it gives you more time to think more about things. Another thing that makes this film so good is that the the colour and the lighting in different scenes...and of course Willis and Jackson really succeed in doing believable acting. An underrated movie!
The Warriors (1979)
One of my all time favorite movies
The film is mainly about a gang called "The Warriors" who are trying to get back to their territory, while fighting off cops and other gangs.
When I first saw this movie yesterday I had very low expectations. Perhaps that was good, because I was thoroughly impressed by it! I was totally caught by "The Warriors" because the plot of this film is so original. The cinematography combined with the excellent music and that most of the film takes place during the night creates a perfect combination.
The action is almost non-stop and you just can't stop watching it. I also think the costumes that the different gangs wear adds to the story. The soundtrack is really good, especially the song "In The City" that is played in the end! And the ending itself is absolutely perfect.
This cult film is an absolute must and can't be missed. It's also one of my all time favorite movies.
This is one of the few movies I will be able to watch over and over again. It deserves no less than 10/10.
Bedazzled (2000)
Only worth seeing because sexy Liz Hurley is in it!
I was told that this film would be both funny and good. But its a really bad movie. It's boring, Brendan Fraser's acting isn't that bad but the plot is so bad that you want it to end a.s.a.p! I didn't laugh on single time during the entire movie..that gives you a general idea how funny this film can be. This film is only worth seeing because sexy Liz Hurley is in it. But if you are looking for a good laugh, rent another movie.
Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (2001)
A lot better than I thought...
I saw this film today in the Cinema. The film critics gave it the bottom grade. But I didn't listen to them. Do I ever? This third entry is not really as good as the two other films, but well worth seeing. I was really a lot better than I thought. Paul Hogan is as funny and charming as ever. If you're a fan like me. Four words: GO AND SEE IT! For everyone else. I recomend it. I give it 7/10.
