American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally (2021)
Revisionist History
Yeah, this review contains "spoilers" if by "spoilers" you mean attention to history. The woman known as Axis Sally stayed in Germany willingly during the Nazi era, collaborated with Germany's propaganda machine, and did her best to spur on Hitler's horrific policies.
In this movie, she is portrayed quite sympathetically -- as a brash but somewhat dim young woman who did what she did mostly out of ignorance and fear. In reality, she was in her 40s during the war and nearing fifty by the time she was tried. She was, in other words, an adult. An adult who'd tried and failed at an acting career in the States and overseas, finally becoming a "star" in Nazi Germany.
I do not believe in capital punishment for anyone, even serial killers and traitors. But this woman, who was charged on multiple counts of treason and was convicted on only one, served only twelve years in prison and lived a pretty comfortable life for the next 25+ years, even earning a BA -- majoring in speech of all things.
The Bloodhound (2020)
Interesting version of Poe tale
The original story came out in 1839. In this version the house itself is mid-century modern, the characters are 21st century, and the mood is strictly fin de siecle decadence, wavering between ennui and angst.
It's a little self-indulgent, but overall a pretty nifty little film.
