Columbo: Columbo and the Murder of a Rock Star (1991)
A Colombo for the ages
We all know how Peter Falk, as the Chinese water-torture of Detectives, can wear down the most erudite and cunning adversary. In this episode he almost meets his match in Dabney Coleman. Coleman is one of the best actors to portray villains as he has that arrogant sneer we love to hate. The close ups of Coleman's sneer and Falk's deadly smile is a viewer's delight to behold. He and Falk playing cat and mouse is riveting drama and not to be missed.
Allied (2016)
Casablanca redux?
I have always felt that any movie with a love story set in Casablanca has an uphill battle to avoid being compared to Bogart and Bergman's all time classic. I have to admit that was my first take, but kudos to Pitt and Cotillard for drawing me in with compelling performances and when the plot turned to the the spy vs spy intrigue in London I was totally into this flick. To say more is to give away a poignant plot twist that makes ALLIED a must see.
Passengers (2016)
A new genre?
I gave this flick a 9 because nothing is perfect, but PASSENGERS comes close to perfecting a nice blend of character studies with fantastic visual effects and a subtext of classic Si/Fi. The characters are well drawn and this would make a wonderful love story in any other setting. Pratt and Lawrence are dynamite in and out of the sack and it's one of Lawrence's best performances. Kudos to the production team for using real future gadgets instead of CGI. A nice look into the electronic future.
Von Richthofen and Brown (1971)
Missing History
This film was surprisingly well done with very believable flying sequences. My only criticism is that the history was not quite what I wanted as there is a lot of dispute as to whether Arthur Ray Brown shot down the Red baron or it was ground fire. Might of made for some good drama with a post shoot down take on that.
The Magic Sword (1962)
Just enjoy
I agree with other reviewers the acting is stiff and the effects dated, but for the early 60's and for me when I was younger it was a fun movie! Your kids will love it. Gary Lockwood did his best but he was playing against some actors who did not emote well. So take it for what it is and just enjoy it.
