Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road (2023)
Doctor Who is fun again!
I just wanted to preface this by saying: I actually like Jodie. I think she's a great actor, but was let down by terrible writing, boring stories and most of all awful direction.
From the first scene Ncuti commands the screen. He's charismatic, cool, funny and fun. The spotlight is on him, because he IS the Doctor. I never bought Jodie as the Doctor. Ncuti, it was instant.
Between the barmy story and the brilliant acting on show from Ncuti, Millie and the rest, this is honestly off to a fantastic start.
It's been so long since I've been genuinely excited for the next episode of Doctor Who to come out.
RTD is back and Doctor Who is campy and fun again!
The Black Phone (2021)
Good, but drastically overrated
The way people talked about this film when it first came out, to say the least, I was expected the 2nd coming of A Nightmare on Elm Street. With that said, it was good, quite unique, at least I've never seen a film with a similar story, but ultimately it was just an abduction thriller, with some friendly ghosts sprinkled on top to add a supernatural layer to it, not even a horror film like some people have been saying. Wonderfully acted by the whole cast, I swear kids are getting better every year at acting.
To summarise: overhyped, just a good thriller film, held up by some great performances and a unique premise.
Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils (2022)
Boring, terrible CGI
Firstly, the story itself was boring, full of endless exposition, most of which made no sense whatsoever in a desperate attempt to make 13 sound super smart. 2 of the main characters in this episode are pirates, you know, murderers, rapists, thieves? Giving awful people heroic stories is just sad, I assume because #stopasianhate is the new trend.
Don't get me started on the visual effects, I haven't seen CGI that bad since The Lazurus Experiment.
The forced romantic sub-plot needs to go. It sucked with 10 and Rose, 10 and Martha, 11 and Amy and 11 and Clara. Can we please just stop it? I'm begging you. They are over 1000 years old at this point. The Doctor/companion dynamic is fine with just being friends. That's why most people love 10 and Donna so much.
I think most of us are crossing our fingers that RTD and Bad Wolf can fix this mess. I guess time will tell.
Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks (2022)
Overused plotline
I'm honestly thinking people are rating this and Flux higher than they should because they're simply better than the absolute garbage that was Chibnall's first 2 series.
This story uses the overplayed groundhog day trope to boring effect. Not to mention a certified Chibnall countdown, can't forget one of those.
The plot, to me was boring, Heaven Sent did it much better, though they had good writers then so that makes sense. Once again, the side characters were the best part of this story. Nick and Sarah were great, I'd honestly prefer them as the Doctor and companion to be honest, cause let's be honest, Dan is only there to look stupid and confused while the girls do everything and Yaz has been reduced to sad love interest for the Doctor now.
The story involves the Daleks sending an execution squad to kill the Doctor for her part in the Sontarans slaughtering their troops. However, this makes little sense, seeing as for them to exist they would have willing chose to die to the Flux instead of going with the rest of the Daleks, because at that point all they'd have known is that the Flux was going to wipe them out.
Another gripe, for gods sake, please put the sonic screwdriver down. Sonic this, sonic that. So much sonic!
I can't describe how keen I am for this era to be over and hope that RTD can bring back some well written sci-fi.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Six - The Vanquishers (2021)
A classic Chibnall mess
Ah yes, I had low hopes for this ending and it did not disappoint.
The flux? Nah that's gone. The ravagers? Nah they're gone. They're motivation? Who cares right? The grand serpent? Gone. His motivation and end game? Who cares? The universe? Restored? Who the hell knows? Chibnall sure doesn't. The vinder and bel storyline? Just as pointlessly shoved in as we all expected.
The Daleks we just saw deleted from existence, back for the new years special.
Can't wait for none of this to be explained.
In conclusion, I feel so sorry for RTD for having to come back to this mess and fix it.
tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Andrew Garfield just...wow!
I'll cut to the chase, I don't really like musicals, I thoroughly enjoyed this musical. A bit of a slow start but it got interest quite quickly. Andrew was a revelation in this role, best of his career may be accurate. The music was great, the acting was perfect. Overall, the film was stellar and all involved should be proud.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Five - Survivors of the Flux (2021)
Just a mess
You can just tell next week is going to be a massive exposition dump because Chibnall has just put way too many plots into this last episode to explain without it.
So many issues with this episode though.
Where is claire? How did they escape the village displaced in time? How did they know where to go? How did it take 3 years to get from England to south America but then they managed to go to 3 other places in the span of a year? Why the hell did Karvanista's ship detect that message from 100 years ago? How did vinder and bel find that place? Vinder especially. He now just owns a bloody teleporting device? What is the point of this grand serpent character? Kate knew what he was doing but instead of stopping him all those years, she waits and then has a stern word with him? Why isn't this season called Division or Origin? The flux is basically nothing to the story.
This episode was terrible, just constant jumping around and exposition.
So many issues, but those are the ones off the top of my head.
