Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Mission Impossible 3
I continue to get surprised more and more by this series. Normally in a series of films by the time you get to number 3 it's time to end it. But not with this Mission Impossible series. It just continues to go on strong. Ethan is in yet another predicament because the women he loves is in danger. This time the villain is played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who, RIP, is a absolute genius with his acting work. He quite honestly goes after Tom Cruise character because be went after him. Typical revenge plot. No more to it then that. Ving Rhames is great in this as well. I would recommend this for the great storyline and the non stop action.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
The Hateful Eight
Tarantino is insane and I love it! Yet another instant classic! The film takes places during the 1800s in Wyoming in what turns out to be a awful winter store. A bounty hunter ends up giving a African American US soldier a ride with him and a prisoner to a close by cabin, where more people, who are strangers, are waiting. They offer food, shelter, coffee, alcohol, and good conversation. But it is not what it appears to be. It is much more sinister. This film is wonderful, but very glory at times so if you have a weak stomach you may not enjoy. I love the civil war twist in the film. Would definitely recommend.
Instant Family (2018)
Instant Family
I had never even heard of this movie until I watched it a few days ago. I must say I was impressed. Naturally I knew I would enjoy it because Mark Walberg was in the film and I know how great his acting is. The movie is centered around a young couple that all of a sudden want to start a family, so they decide to adopt a young family throw the social services system. The kids are kind hearted at their core, but they are very troubled. This is life changing for all the parties involved. This story is very good. It's heart warming to watch and to see the kids go through the different changes in their life and to show low loved they are. Great film.
Top Gun (1986)
Top Gun
I have seen Top Gun a few times over the years and I didnt really care for it to be honest. But this last time I really enjoyed it. Tony Scott as the director really pulled this off. So much creativity in this film. I think the biggest gift that Tony Scott had when directing this film was that he understood when to make the music help tell the story or set the mood in the scenes throughout the film. That really helps drive the story home. At first I struggled with this film because, well I didn't service in US Army and I'm not interested in airplanes, so naturally this film didn't originally appeal to me. But it's so much more then that. It's a story of friendship, love, and duty to our country. Nicely done. I would definitely recommend.
Django Unchained (2012)
Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino is insane. And I say that with a complete smile on my face. This is yet another one of his great pieces of work that has his style written all over it. The film takes place in the south during the 1850s, which is when slavery was still legal, and man buys a slaves freedom and he then helps him as he is a bounty hunter chasing down fugitives. But during this process he then discovers that Django has been separated from his wife due to slavery so he helps him locate her on a absolutely evil plantation with a evil plantation owner. This is classic Tarantino and just a great film. Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Foxx are fantastic in this film.
Meet the Parents (2000)
Meet the Parents
When i first viewed this film in the early 2000s I had no idea that this comedy was going to end up being such a classic film that it has become. I viewed this film a few days ago after a friend of mine pointed out some great things about the film that I had not yet even realized. Just had solid some of the scenes are with Robert DeNiro and the jokes that are made throughout the film really show great comedy. The film is centered around a man that is a nurse who wants to marry his girlfriend but as he proposing to her he realizes her father is very old school and wants to meet him first and then give his blessing. So they fly in town and Meet the Parents...
Point Break (1991)
Point Break
I must admit there is not much bad to say about this film of you enjoy a good action film. The story line is good, the action is great, and the film is overall just fun and interesting. The storyline takes place around bank robbers who wear masks of the last four presidents when they rob banks. Nothing is known about these bank robbers- except they only appear during the summer time during some type of major surf season. That's it. A young new detective is peared with a seasoned old school detective and they set out to find these bank robbers. However, when the young detective meets new friends and goes undercover he gets caught up in the web of good and evil. Wrong and lawful. I would recommend this film of you enjoy a good action thriller because this one certainly is and does not fall short of great.
Virtuosity (1995)
Virtuosity
This is a fun Sci fi film. The film is a older film about staring a young Russell Crowe as a computer made villian that has gotten out of the computer system and is out in the world ruining the life of several citizens and a man that is in prison but has been released in order to stop him. There is absolutely nothing a person can take seriously about this film. It is so insane and over the top but it'd very fun to watch Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe go toe to toe. This is a good Sci fi and action film to just watch once if you have not already seen it. With the technology we have available in 2024 if this would be made into a remake this could be great!
Scarface (1983)
Scarface
I really enjoyed this film with AL Pacino as Tony Montana. I view Scarface as a historical film. This is a film based primarily on what was going on with the United States and Cuba Government throughout the 1980s. This is a reflection on corruption and what was allowed by thr government, particularly in Florida. The film is about two immigrants that come over from Cuba and they assassinated a political refugee for the Cuban government and exchange they get papers to come to the United States legally. They then start working for a drug kingpin, but he betrays them so they assassinate him and then take over his empire. However, the drug world is much different then what they thought it would be especially after the main character starts using his own supply. This film is a great classic movie.
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
Mission Impossible 2
The action and story was definitely here in this film. But what else can you expect from Director John Woo?? The story picks up where the original film left off. Back with the world's slickest spy, this time his girl that he is dating is caught in the web of the game and is forced to commit acts she does not want to in order to not get herself killed. This film has so many great action scenes and honestly a pretty good cast which makes it very complimentary of the original. I did catch myself not glued the entire time, but i thought the film was still great. I would recommend this if you like the series and a good action film.
Face/Off (1997)
Face/Off
This is a wonderful movie. I really enjoyed the film. The story is centered around a dedicated, old fashioned FBI agent that's out to get a terrorist iff the streets. However, during a attempt on his life, the terrorist accidentally shoot and kills the FBI agents youngest son. This results in an absolute obsession with finding his sons killer. A few years later, he finally catches up to him, but there's a catch. There is a bomb in the city and he must now figure out how to stop it and locate the bomb. So there is a new procedure where he can switch with him if they remove his face and put it on the terrorist and vice versa. If what I just said sounds crazy its because it is! But still a fun film.
The Rainmaker (1997)
The Rainmaker
This is a good one. Francis Ford Coppola directing and the cast is Matt Damon, Jon Voight, and Danny Glover ad well as Danny Devito. The film will touch your heart. It is about a new rookie lawyer going up against a evil corporate lawyer and insurance company that is downright evil to their customers. The insurance company denied the benefits and treatment of a young man with leukemia that could have been saved if the insurance company had just accepted the claim. In the middle of all of that, Matt Damon's character falls in love with a young lady played by Claire Danes that is in a abusive relationship and he wants to save her. Also, to add to the great cast you have Mickey Rouke as well as a sleepy lawyer, but honestly his character can be done without for the plot of the story. I would recommend this the story is very good, the acting is great, and there is not a dull moment in the story it will keep the viewer interested.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Vanilla Sky
I am not sure why everyone was so confused with this film when it originally came out. All you have to do is simply pay attention to the explanation that is being given at the end of the movie. There is no more to it then what's told. The film is actually very interesting. Tom Cruise character is great, but he is a complete mess. Dealing with a large corporation and the evil they did to him made his character worse then what it had to be. I thought this one was good and it forces the viewer to have to think. I would recommend this if you have not seen it and want to see a great Tom Cruise movie.
Harlem Nights (1989)
Harlem Nights
This film is a perfect comedy! I have loved this film for I dont know how long. It takes place in the 1920s in Harlem. A man who owns a after hour gambling spot, ends up raising a young man as his own son, which he then turns into his business partner. As time goes on, the gambling spot ends up becoming very successful. This attracts the attention of a dirty cop and a local mafia gangster. They now want a piece of the action, but they aren't going to turn their hard earned work and business over to the mafia that simply. This film is classic. So many good names in this film to mention. Can't go wrong with this one.
Collateral (2004)
Collateral
I thought this was a fantastic film. Where could this have gone wrong? With Michael Manns directing, Tom Cruise just at the top of his game giving a absolutely fantastic performance, and you mix in Jamie Foxxx and you have a fantastic top notch film. The film takes place in L. A. when the mafia brings in a hitman to commit several murders all in the course of one night. A good, kind hearted, honest man, that is a cab driver, unknowingly, is his driver for the night. He takes him around town and once he catches on he is not happy that he is brought into this. This is a wonderful film that I definitely would recommend if you haven't seen yet.
Magnolia (1999)
Magnolia
I was very surprised by this film. I was very unsure what to think seeing as I had never seen the film and it. First off, the cast of the film os top notch. What a good assembled cast with this story, which is what I think is what helps drive this one home. The story is centered around common, good people that are all kind of sad, depressed people that are looking for acceptance and love. The characters don't really have anything in common other the that. This film is beautifully written and directed. I cannot believe that I had not seen this film, seeing as I am a huge movie fan. Definitely gets my recommendation.
Nick of Time (1995)
Nick of Time
Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken are great in this film. I thought the film was well put together. Nothing like a good political thriller. A man is traveling with his daughter through a train station when he is singled out by a insane government official that blackmail him killing the governor in order for his kidnapped daughter to not be killed. The reality is the plot is kind of ridiculous I mean in modern times to murder a politician in public at a hotel would be impossible to do unless it is a inside job. Which this was. But the film is still a good thriller. I would recommend this if you want to see a thriller.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Requiem for a Dream
What a crazy insane film, but yet so good. The film is centered around 4 people in New York and quite honestly drug's tears them apart. They are all actually good people at heart they just all have very weak personalities which has caused them to fall into the trap of doing drugs. The film takes you through about half a years life cycle, which shows the characters getting worse and worse and more and more dependent on drugs which ultimately results in them doing very bad things like robbing people or prostitution for the money. This film is one of the best films on why drugs are bad but it shows what drugs truly does to people and their relationships. I really enjoyed this film and would recommend this but I will caution that this film is gritty and very rough.
God's Pocket (2014)
God's Pocket
What an outstanding piece of work. Philip Seymour Hoffman was a flat out talented actor. May he R. I. P. This film is centered around hard working people in a small blue collar community in Philadelphia. After a tragic situation on a job site, the main characters brother passes away. But nobody in the family believe that the accident was a accident and that it happened the way they said it did. The main characters have friends that aren't quite mob guys but tough guys, which causes them to dig deeper into what really happened. All the while the main characters wife is becoming interested in a local writer and his alcohol and gambling problem is costing him everything.
Another 48 Hrs. (1990)
Another 48 Hours
I thought this film was a good sequel, but I understand why the series stopped at two. The film opens up 8 years after the original. The movie starts out with a promise being broken. Jack has to again reach out to Reggie who is still in prison to help him solve a murder case. This time someone is trying to kill Reggie. As the movie goes on its revealed that he stole the money from him and he has actually brought Jack's car and house. It's a messed up complicated story, but it's still fun. I would recommend if you enjoyed the first film. This film is not bad, but overall it's still interesting to watch once.
48 Hrs. (1982)
48 Hours
Eddie Murphey and Nick Nolte have it going on in this film. This film is just plain good, no other way of putting it. Story is centered around a angry man that is broken out of prison to get back some money he felt he was entitled too due to helping steal it. Along the way a rough and I mean rough Detective is hot on their trail but needs a man that is locked up to help him solve the case in 48 hours. With this duo a convict and a rough detective we see many memorable scenes and many memorable lines along the way in this film. Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte are great together in this film. I would recommend this if you have never seen this.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Ferris Buellers Day Off
What a great film. Yes I know this is a big one of the 80s but even today it's relevant. This film is centered around a bunch of spoiled rich entitled kids in Chicago that quite honestly are schemers. But, I think overall they are good people although Ferris makes some comments that I wonder if he is a good person or a spoiled entitled brat. But I live what happens in regard to that hateful dean of students that went entirely to far with his comments and his actions towards these kids that were just that kids. I loved the growth that the character Cameron experienced as well. I would recommend this film its so fun and still relevant.
Switchback (1997)
Switchback
This was a absolutely great film. I have seen it once many years ago but just seen it this past week in 2024 and I really enjoyed it. The topic is about a serial killer that is on the lose and has been for several a long time. The serial killer actually kidnaps the lead detective minor son and he is toying with him as he is trying to locate his son through several games he is trying to play. I personally thought all the main actors in this film were great on this film. Danny Glover and Dennis Quaid just make this movie excellent. It's a deep and honestly tragic story but very well directed and acted. I would recommend.
Witness (1985)
Witness
This one surprised me with how good it truly was. What a breath of fresh air from what we see in modern day films. Harrison Ford and Danny Glover do a remarkable job with this film. Let me pause on Danny Glover. He has a very dark role in which we are not used to seeing and he absolutely excells at it. The story is very complicated. A young Amish man witnesses a murder and it turns out that it is a cop that does the murder. The young man goes into hiding with a cop that tries to kill him after he discovers that he is the murderer. The cop finds acceptance amongst the Amish group that is hiding him out but the dirty cops are hot on his trail. I found this film to be very dark and very interesting. I would recommend this if you love a good thriller.
The Untouchables (1987)
The Untouchables
This film is very Hollywood. It's not historically accurate or anything of that sort. So if you are expecting that then don't view it. But if you are expecting to view a great action film that in modern day standards is cheesy then you will definitely love viewing this one. The film is about Elliot Ness and AL Capone. Played by Kevin Costner and Robert DeNiro. Both of these actors give out fine performances in this film, as well as Sean Connery and Andy Garcia, who was very new to the acting business at the time of the film. The film tells the story of how Elliot Ness did whatever was necessary to take down Capone and his underworld mafia. Great film to watch and enjoy but not one for the history books.
