Hall (2020)
Escaping an abusive relationship
It's very hard escaping an abusive relationship. I unfortunately know from experience. You imagine horrible scenarios and awful things that could happen should you try to leave. The route to your escape (hallway, car, stairs, elevator) seems cluttered, dangerous and long. If you screw up, both you and your child may die (Naomi and unborn child) but you still must try. If you have a still and small voice encouraging you to still leave and "that your daughter needs you" (woman with daughter locked in random hotel room) then you're lucky. Downstairs, it was shown that there was no state emergency. This woman and daughter (albeit fictional) got away. Love this film.
Saint Maud (2019)
Anther Winner for A24
Maud is a troubled soul who has an occupation of nursing. According to character Joy and flashbacks during the movie, something tragic happened at Maud/Katie's prior employment which resulted in a newfound faith in God (albeit a well-intentioned faith, but mixed with hallucinations-voices and images). Maud seeks more independent employment through a placement agency who provides individual care to those in need-in this case, she is privileged to care for a sought after and wild spirit Amanda whose leukemia is terminal. While caring for Amanda, Maud experiences several visits from her God which include energy changes (lights flickering and almost seizure-type experiences) and even verbal commands.
Long story short-Maud/Katie is an extremely lonely soul who will stop at nothing to achieve acceptance and approval-even with an unknown entity (or mere voice in her mind) who drives her further into depravity.
The ending of this movie was amazing. Reminded me slightly of another A24 religious film-First Reformed.
In these two movies, both main characters try their best to follow their God-directed paths. The endings of these films are very similar-both are drowned in delusion but Maud's finale reveals a much more graphic depiction.
An 100% must watch. I only rated it a 9 due to my desire for more character development.
