I, Robot (2004)
As corny and cheesy as Independence Day
Great story ruined by a delivery which left it as corny and clichéd as Independence Day. Great visuals and brilliant effects make it worth a watch (possibly on DVD rather than cinema) but the screenplay which is a hotch potch of everything from Demolition Man to Star Trek: Next Generation Episodes leaves you feeling empty and way less than satisfied. I had the constant feeling it could have done with a different, perhaps unknown cast, and much more subtle story telling rather than the 'fast food' style of plot. After a couple of hours the 'seen it all before' feel of the film wore me out...
A disappointment all in all.
3 Non-Blondes (2003)
Hilarious, original, harmless fun!
This is a brilliant series demonstrating the improvisational talents of three female, extremely talented UK comics, who wander the high streets of the UK making themselves look ridiculous in front of hidden cameras, all for our entertainment. The joke is always on the performers, never on the member or the public which is why this format works so brilliantly. The short sketches, with quick stings will leave your sides aching and belly laughing more than anything you have seen in a long time. A brilliant commission by the BBC - brave and original. Long may it run and run.
The Mayor of Casterbridge (2003)
Excellent production of perfect novel
The ITV1 Christmas 2003 showing of this production in the UK was sensitive and thoughtful, with two separate 2 hour long episodes meaning the production really had time to show its colours and the story time to develop. Performances, staging and screenplay were all excellent getting as close to doing a Hardy story justice as I have ever seen. Truly brilliant. 4 million well spent in bringing Hardy to a new audience. Only question is, with the production complete at the beginning of 2001, why did it take so long to reach us....
