The Overcoat (II) (2018)
5/10
"Adaptation" means we rewrote the story
17 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a cute Christmas story with a touching plot and a beautiful animation, however it has (almost) nothing to do with Gogol's Overcoat.

First of all, the way XIX century Russia is depicted is all wrong. From the way people are living, to how Christmas is celebrated. The setting is very Americanized.

The story itself is butchered into something completely different, the main point of the story is replaced with a lesson about possessions and attachments to them.

I do not recommend to watch it to anyone who respects Gogol's story or want to know it. But this is a good animated short if you treat it like an original Christmas story.

Peninsula (2020)

Everything at once
24 July 2020
Peninsula is an extremely fun movie to watch. It packs virtually all genres possible, the movie is way too much but very entertaining. You have zombies (although they are not really threatening and felt more like a tool used to advance the plot), you have Mad Max-like car chases, you have wild insane people enjoying the Purge, you have a hint of a comedy and a whole lot of soap opera drama. At one point I was convinced the characters would start dancing Bollywood-style! While Train to Busan was character-driven and emotional film, Peninsula is a wild, action-packed movie which has almost nothing to do with the former. It would fit perfectly into Zombieland universe and the reviews here would be much better then. In other words, it is a bad movie if you expect Train to Busan continuation but a good Zombieland 3. Plot-wise, Peninsula leaves even more question unanswered, if you think about characters' background or some story details you'll notice a lot of inconsistencies, plot holes and unclarities. But this movie is not made to think, so don't take it seriously, don't expect much and just enjoy whatever nonsense is going on on-screen.

Decent add on to the Paranormal Activity series
19 July 2020
I enjoyed this sequel more than American Paranormal Activity 2. The pace is much faster and the characters are more likeable. The movie is nicely connected to the other Activities and doesn't feel out of place. Still not a thrilling movie, but, in my opinion, none of the PA movies are. I liked the ending - whenever you think everything is over, you get something more. The movie does mirror the first PA a lot (some scenes are very similar), but still felt different enough and wasn't boring to watch. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece of the horror genre, but comparing to the other Paranormal Activities this is one of the best.

Thrilling movie about dumb kids
19 July 2020
A good Taiwanese horror with quite an unexpected twist. Finally, a fresh idea in a horror genre. Even though the main theme has been explored by many others, this movie manages to stay unique, genuinely scary and dark. Just don't expect CGI demons or any special effects, the movie rely heavily on suspense, not on scary imagery. Overall, the film doesn't feel expensive. While the idea is interesting, the characters are too whiny and their actions are predictable and stupid. On the other hand, the storyline kind of relies on characters being so forgettable. Definitely not a waste of time and can be watched alone or with friends, however because of the tangled storyline, I would advise to really pay attention to the screen.
