Assassin's Creed (2016)
So much better than the reviews suggest.
Michael Fassbender is the hero this generation of action movies desperately needed. His character manages to be engaging without having much to work with. The action choreography, soundtrack and cinematography were also excellent. I just wish the Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard characters had moe depth but they were sacrificed for the sake of the action.
Burning Cane (2019)
So so boring
This movie manages to be poorly shot, gimmicky and beyond boring at the same time. None of its characters are in any way compelling - the alcoholic preacher character has been done (much better) before. In the end you end up not caring about any of the characters in any way.
Don't Breathe (2016)
Why didn't they just kill him
The Evil Dead remake by the same director was good, and while this movie has its strong points the stupidity of these kids made it way less enjoyable. The guy is blind, just find a weapon put the radio on and kill him. If the makers had made it more clear that he had supernatural powers It could have been excusable but overall it didn't make a lot of sense and didn't involve enough violence to make up for it.
Evil Dead (2013)
Decent Remake with own style
This movie is nothing like the originals which hilarious but I liked how it has its own style, the gore is far more satisfying and some of the possession reminded me of the Exorcist. They just could have given the demon a bigger role..
Blue Ruin (2013)
Good but lacking in back story
I enjoyed the film but would not recommend it with enthusiasm to anyone else. The acting is excellent and the main guy is kept in a constant state of paranoia and tension throughout the film. Not all questions need to be answered - we never find out why he is homeless but i think this adds nicely to the general sense of mysteriousness surrounding his character, who is clearly at least a medium smart guy even if he doesn't know how to fire a gun properly. I just wish the story would have addressed the backstory more as this drives the plot. We are left wondering why this guy feels the need to kill everyone, is he afraid of retribution or just angry about the prison release?
The Lighthouse (2019)
Entertaining but style over substance
Like a flamboyant dream punctuated by short but bizarre sequences, I wasn't sure by the end of the movie what had actually happened but enjoyed watching. Maybe I need to read more about ocean mythology. Robert Pattinson is improving all the time as an actor but his accent sounds strange although it matches the tone of the movie perfectly. Willem Dafoe clearly has a lot of fun in his role and is entertaining to watch. He always manages to successfully tread the fine line between comedy and slapstick and while the result here would best be described as comedy horror, it belongs to its own genre entirely. I enjoyed the director's last movie The Witch a lot more than this film but am happy to see that he and his brother seem to be interested in exploring surreal themes in their filmmaking which is not that common today. The way the movie was shot, as a series of vignettes didn't work as well here as for the Witch but I liked the square aspect ratio and the soundtrack was excellent. They could have included some colour (blue of the ocean, greens and yellows in the grass) to bring some of the scenes to life - the low grey sky bearing down on a baron island already conveys the bleakness and claustrophobia the directors are after. The accents are difficult to understand so watch this when you're ready to concentrate
Joker (2019)
Terrible let-down unworthy of comparison to better films.
Worst movie I've seen since Black Panther, completely lacking in understanding of the difference between homage and pastiche, but then what's to expect when the director's best films include the hangover and due date. While the cinematography is well done and reminiscent of the Christian Bale Batman films, unlike those films we never actually see what it's like to live in the world inhabited by the Joker, nor are we introduced to any other character in any meaningful way which makes the (minimal) violence and general cult-worship of the Joker appear contrived and his constant sufferings seem like melodrama. It's hard to see how this Joker could possibly evolve into a criminal mastermind but then maybe the franchise is aiming to break completely with the Heath Ledger legacy which is a shame because Joaquin Phoenix obviously has the potential to up the disturbing maniac factor considerably. They could have made this a better film by increasing the level of violence Korean style and/or by dedicating way more screen time to other characters to create a more meaningful image of the society which produced the Joker. For me one of the factors which actually made the Heath Ledger Joker so memorable and disturbing was that his screen time was limited. Worth watching for movie fans who may enjoy picking it apart, but completely pointless and forgettable for anyone just looking to be entertained.
