Light of Day (1987)

The best is the credits
13 April 2023
Gotchya

The "Light of Day" rendition of the Bruce Springsteen song during the credits for this movie is perhaps the jewel in the crown of Joan Jett's career. And guess who's there. If I had a copy of the original paper on Relativity I would horse trade it for a registered copy of this video footage. Strictly for financial gain. I would put that hard drive on my shelf and display it next to the Amy Winehouse video of Back to Black at Dingle Ireland and Dire Straits UTube rendition of Sultams of Swimg.

I don't want to talk aboutTom Waits.

YadaYadaYadaYda ! Yad da da yada ya ya da da ya ya !!!

There I have enough words.

Huh....?
6 December 2022
Everything you bad can say about this show is true. Yet it persists. I don't know why. When I first got hooked on it I felt like George Castanza getting caught at a party eating a chocolate eclair from the trash can. Attorney Woo is sooo cute. Her friends are cool, but mostly I get a kick out of confusing my wife with the sounds emanating from the TV , She doesn't understand what is going on from the kitchen because she doesn't know there are subtitles on the screen. This embellishes my creds as a mystery man. But really the best part in each episode is waiting for the lights to go on in Woo's head when she solves the case at the end. Pure bubble gum, pure joy. More please.

Chops

I fell in love with Aubrey Plaza in Safety Not Guaranteed. More so with Ingred Goes West. In spite of her goofy talk show persona aka Andy Kaufman's Latka, or Werstlemania, her ability to act, and choose (produce) good scripts is solid. All of the people who made this film are here to stay. Turbulence in the reviews ? I love it. That's why I go to the movies. More please.

Nope
3 August 2022
Nope is a low budget Eat em Up film that has substituted a flying saucer for T. Rex. Watching it is like experiencing a Knotts Berry Farm fun house ride three times in a row . The fatigue sets in after the first loop.

Pieces of corn
11 June 2022
Gilda Radner said the first write is the barf , the rewrite is when you pick out the pieces of corn. A rewrite would make this movie more lethal but I don't know if the overall impact on the audience and therefore box office receipts would be that much different. This movie is a significant event in the world of indie movie production as it demonstrates the importance of balls in making films happen. There's a lot of talent and texture here if not cohesion. That's Hollywood, thank god.

Season 1, Episode 1: "Not believing you are going to die is what gets you killed."
23 May 2022
Will the Star Trek franchise dissipate into homogenous background noise ? Who would have believed that the awesome power of commanding a starship could transform and individual from bearded reclusive mountain man into Joe Hairdo at the snap of your fingers ? I'm pleased to see that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has reverted to the old one story one episode season format. Trust the writers, troll for scripts, make mistakes, stay alive. Let god and the fans sort em out..... or die. Onward to episode 4.

Do I get a grade on this review ?
1 May 2022
After having to suffer thru some required literature classes in college Its a breath of fresh air watching a movie like this. The King is compelling and done extremely well. Just the way the producers of the film intended , as an end in itself.

This is a rare Utube team of quality nerds who get off on deep diving into available information and analysis. Follow Binkov, follow the war in UKRAINE. Binkovs take on the coming battle in eastern Ukraine was out weeks ago. The information you suck up from Binkov will enable you to school your friends during any dinner conversation about the war. To be sure, do not confuse this site with the other fly by night Tube sites presenting images of blown up tanks .. If Ukraine isn't enough for you check out episodes about whats brewing in Taiwan. Stay tuned.

Two pinballs, two cherries, 10 stars.
19 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Let me explain. Actually, let me simplify.

My wife proposed that viewers of this movie , not from the valley, or the era, may not like this movie. Good point. Another issue seems to be the underage boyfriend thing. For us Licorice Pizza quickly dispensed with these issues . I have to say, the arcade pervert is a nice touch ( Was I dreaming ? Watch the background scenes. ).

Don't try to force Licorice Pizza into the usual coming of age narrative, rather see it as an adventure spanning a community of grade school kids, siblings, family, sweaty teens, and the Hollywood food chain. Gary is a mover and talker who gets the girl. Pinball one. Alana, the star, is a lovable smart gamer (who can drive a truck backwards downhill without gas). Not enough sex ? Gee..... Pinball two. Its a treat watching these two pinballs bounce around.

Tom Waits ? Huh ? Cherry one. Alana Haim's debut film appearance. Cherry two .

Licorice Pizza is full of lumps, left turns , character snapshots, and momentum. My kind of movie. 10 stars.

Ok............. With constraints
27 December 2021
I stopped watching this film after 30 minutes. Made me fell itchy all over, as if I was back at college in a literature class being forced to write a paper on a book I didn't want to read and then being graded on the paper. But I figured hey, since I paid to watch the film , I don't have to watch it anymore.

You lost me on the first date
18 October 2021
There is no story here just an apparent character study that never reaches ignition. I found myself thinking more about the dialog being batted back and fourth between the actors than buying into the ride. Looks like I'm not a part of the demographic this movie was aimed at. I'm acutely aware that the only qualification needed to be a movie critic is the ability to punch keys on a keyboard.

Script writing balls
3 September 2021
I've always imagined that I could be a writer. I know I can't write. But if I could be a writer I would write a short story that starts with a word and by the end of the story the definition of the word has been changed. Better yet I'd be a poet writing a poem accomplishing a similar transformation.

Frances Ferguson accomplishes this transformation. This is not a comedy it is a heavy lift by people who can do comedy but choose to lift something that otherwise stinks. Sex offense. For the film epicurean this is no problem. ( As long as it want't written by a priest or a convicted sex offender seeking vindication.)

Don't let your spouse (or friends) catch you watching Frances Ferguson or you're gonna have a look on your face like George Costanza being caught eating a chocolate eclair out of the kitchen trash can at your friends party. 5 stars for script writing balls. A movie gem that makes the continuing hunt worthwhile. If I didn't do my homework and I'm wrong about the intent of the writer, I've been had. After all the only skill needed to write a movie review is the ability to hit keys on a keyboard.

Lost its bite
16 July 2021
Was real good in the beginning, first season that is. Now trending to mediocre with watered down script. You can find your favorite issue this season but give up hope of finding complexity if you enter here. Too much for everyone. Being vexed by being left handed is over.

Being smart is not the same as being right
16 July 2021
I think the simple display of History is enough. No need to Mansplain , no need for a word warrior here. Look Rumsfield in the eye and accept what you see. The lingering thought I have , as a result of this documentary, is why do people who are unqualified for the job delight in their mere presence instead of what they have done. Now if you don't mind, I'm off to get a Covid vaccine.

The storyline evolves as it goes, just like Harry Potter. I keep falling asleep while my wife and I have a date on Netflix. Try Rake, much much better.

Milk toast for geriatric virgin minds ?
16 July 2021
My wife really likes this series. I don't. Most of the cast members are in their forties-sixties, the sexy young ones are in their thirties. Watery at best. Hey doesn't mean the story doesn't count. This one doesn't. Im trying Manifest but that looks bleak too. Baby Ballroom looks good . It s original.

Kick ass characters , acting , storyline, visuals , and impact. Beats the Brits by a mile when it comes to a killer cop series.. Did I mention the glass ceiling has been turned to dust ? A hard act to follow, take your time and make it good , if only just one more time. Do it.

Something for everybody.
6 April 2021
A good story can be one sentence long or it can fill three novels. The best way to kill a good story is to ensure that the story contains something for everybody. Short Treks dials back the overproduced feel good momentum of Star Trek Discovery to manageable hit or miss events. Now lets get on with it. Thank you.

Ok I'm Jaded
22 March 2021
I've gotten over Star Wars. And now I think Im over Star Trek. I liked the idea of single episodes rather than a continuing saga with all its drudgery. (Stories by committee downgraded to a long story by a committee.) I miss ensign Roe, I miss Tasha Yar, and yes , I miss the first dingy episode of Commander Pike and an halicuinatory prison. Take some chances people my god , take some chances. No fair taking chances by committee The story is everything people, even if its cheap, dirty , and wrong. I don't care what you budget is .

Sentinelle isn't Close
12 March 2021
To see what might have been watch Close with Noomie Rapace. Sentinelle simply doest have enough depth or detail in either script or storyline development to make a good movie watching experience. This Lego like movie just isn't interesting ,however much we root for the gore and acid perpetrated by our pissed off commando heroine.

One of my favorite actresses Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma, Thoroghbreds) is captivating in this abstract, unique, compelling journey through the world of chess. The storyline tension between disaster and vindication haunts the viewer until the very end.
