Castle Falls (2021)
Better than expected (I watched Apex before this one!)
Yes, I watched that Apex abomination from Bruce Willis and I wondered how bad can this low budget ($1.5m) be, from our friends Lundgren and Adkins.
I was ready for a disaster and it did start slow and emotional, kind of depressing, but then it changed gears up and up, it got action, humor, blood, tears, in a more rounded package than the usual action movies.
The fights were violent and dirty, the way a street fight should be.
The ending was cooler than a big truck doing donuts at the golf course (on Bruce Willis retirement home) and then rolling coal on Bruce Willis! :D
The lesson is that when underdogs get a windfall, it never comes in a silver plate, nope, it comes chained to two big raging bulldogs and it will take a lot of guts and blood to get it.
Apex (2021)
Neal McDonough's charity work
Neal McDonough is the reason why I watched this stinker and gave it 2 starts instead of 1.
Neal did his role, as a professional, trying to do something impossible which is to get a story with 0% originality, 90's SFX, poor script, poor everything (except for Neal's acting despite the constraints).
The only motivation for a professional actor (Neal McDonough) to join this mess is charity, he felt sorry for the has-beens and wannabes who still need to pay the bills and I can't blame him, I also feel sorry for them. That said, I hope that that Willis guy will retire soon before he hurts more people. And I'm not talking about the bad guys in the movies, I'm talking about the audience.
Bruce Willis get a job at Walmart! (I'll write you a great recommendation letter)
The Wolf Hour (2019)
It felt like a movie from the 70's and I mean it in a good way
The acting was good, not only from the main characters but from every supporting character and movie extra. The attention to detail is remarkable because it made it look and feel like a 70's movie. OK, some 70's movies are too simple, violent, with loud annoying musics, etc. While others are great. This movie, had it been filmed in the 70's, it would have been considered "great" because it kept a terrifying background of violence, social and political tension and even sexual tension, while always present and very strong, affecting the main character in so many ways. And yet, the focus was never on the turmoil "outside" but the one "inside" a woman's head. The addiction, frustration, neglect, self-destruction, phobias and seclusion are something that is part of mental problems.
Who hasn't struggled directly or not with mental problems? Depression is a serious cause of health and economic disruption. "Suicide the leading cause of death in 15-29 age group"
This story is about someone who had one traumatic event in her life and everything went downhill. The end was good because it had a hidden message about what the viewer wanted or expected to happen. It just showed that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Black terminator with soul
If you think that a non-Caucasian cyborg is original, wait till you see a cool and friendly cyborg, funny and witty, yet as implacable as it should be.
In most movies, one often hates the bad guy and totally agrees with the hero. It takes a good plot to make you like and dislike not only the hero and villain but also all the factions fighting in this movie.
The CGI does the job well and so do the actors. This is a cautionary tale about where we're getting into.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
What "The plague dogs" 1982 instead!
What a disappointment! CGI dog with human emotions, politically over-correct and over dramatized story...
Instead of wasting your time with this BS, watch "The plague dogs" 1982
