Lightyear (2022)
This doesn't make any sense
Please do not read if you haven't watched the movie.
Agreeing with a lot of reviews, this movie lacks pretty much any emotional depth, which Pixar has shown in past movies. So yes, they should be capable of delivering this, especially with an as much anticipated origin story as this one. I still gave it a five star rating, as its ok to watch if you exclude it from the Toy Story franchise.
Here comes the spoiler (you've bern warned):
But what I don't get and what I'm a bit surprised that I didn't read about this in other reviews: The twist that it's Buzz himself from the future doesn't only not makes sense, it's a huge storyline error. At which point did the new Buzz start to exist? If he jumped into Hyperspace and came back, isnt this the story of the original Buzz? How can this storyline happen, while the other storyline happens as well? Are there two Buzz' at the same time? Did the Hyperjump clone him? Did Disney pick up some Marvel pieces from the latest Dr Strange movie and mix in some multiverse?
Unfortunately, this unexplained twist ruined the second part of the movie for me, as it is plain and simply not possible (or explained) that there are two separate Buzz Lightyears with their own storyline That's just really bad writing.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Haunting
This is one of these rear gems that stands so far out of the competition that comparing it to any other movie is quite difficult (which is awesome). I don't even know where to start, which is why I can only recommend to watch this 'experience' rather than reading stuff about it beforehand. Take your time and let yourself descend into madness. It's worth it.
What I would like to share is that the cinematography is flawless (I wanted to take screenshots constantly throughout the movie, just to be able to look at them again) , the acting (especially by Defoe) is haunting, and the overall production/presentation is paramount.
Piranha 3DD (2012)
One of the worst sequels ever
Sorry, but this movie is really one of the worst I have seen in a long, long time. Everything I appreciated about the first part seems to be gone in the sequel. Don't get me wrong, I really do appreciate trash, but this movie is not even that, it's just a ridiculous waste of time. Of course I didn't expect anything deep in this movie but plain and simple even more over the top gore as could be seen in the first part. Unfortunately, Piranha 3DD did not deliver as expected. Instead, you get lots and lots of completely stupid scenes, that don't even ad up in any way (and I don't mean in really making sense, cause a movie like this doesn't really make sense at all, but they should at least "work") but that are plain and simply not thought through at all. As an example: Why does the fish in the water tank doesn't just jump out? They can jump out of lakes as well, can't they? Or how does the bus land somehow in the midst of the lake, why cant that guy rip the tiny chain from the toy-handcuffs open and so on). All in all, it feels like I just wasted 1 1/2 hours that I could have spent watching the rain outside. Even the outtakes in the end are not funny at all. I can only speak for myself but I must say after enjoying the first part this sequel is a sheer disappointment.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)
Why, oh why?
I really did try. I stayed awake, the whole time, lasted through this thing that has the guts to call itself a "movie". I love horror, I love sick stuff (what a weird thing to say) and I love trash, but this movie is in my opinion just plain stupid and doesn't manage to be good in any of the three mentioned sections. Its not scary enough, not gory enough (although the idea is twisted, but in a really dumb way) and its just not good trash either. As the idea for the movie seems to have arisen from a joke, unfortunately so is the implementing of this joke a joke. Tom Six should've saved about 80% of the money and shortened the movie by 80% and we would all have a funny and fairly interesting short movie that would say everything this movie says in a lot less shorter time. This whole never-seeming-to-end movie with a constantly yelling Japanese guy, two really bad acting American "oh my god oh my god oh my god" chicks and a doctor that is so stereotype nazilike is just retarded, and I don't mean that in a funny way. Its not that it made me mad or something like that, but its more annoying and a waste of time. It does still get 2 stars for some nice pictures in between and the funny fat dude in the beginning. Andwatch out, cause Germans are exactly like that.
Tôkyô zankoku keisatsu (2008)
The title says it all
Wow. Just finished watching this movie, and I must say, it did not disappoint me. Of course I believe first of all it is necessary to say, that you have to be into these kind of movies, cause if your not, you'll just hate it. This is one of these movies, that in my belief can only be rated as "love it or hate it", there is not an in between.
There is plenty of gore, lots of sick stuff and violence but also you can find some very nice cinematography and funny criticism on society.
I don't want to call this movie "deep" in any way, but it has its very satirical points and the violence shows some very unique fantasy.
If you are into over-the-top gore, comicesque trash movies, Asian shockers like "Itchie" or "The story of Ricky", this is definitely a must watch, that'll keep you entertained and will stay in your head for a while.
I Am Legend (2007)
weird...
OK, well, I give this 5 points because it has some good basic ideas. But the tendency is giving less points. In the beginning of this movie I was really excited and happy of seeing something kind of "new" in this Post-Apocalyptic scenario. I didn't know anything about the movie so I was really looking forward to where it all would lead. Unfortunately I was a little disappointed. The devastation that hit New York is impressive. But throughout the movie it looses the rather good plot and thought behind it and looks like a lame remake of "28 days later" meets "The Descent". I do not like patriotic heroism in movies and there is certainly a lot of other really stupid things in the story, which I really dislike but wont mention to not spoil the movie for people who might enjoy this flick. I like Will Smith, I think he plays his character pretty good in a couple of scenes, but after half the movie I just couldn't help but loosing interest. Its obvious where the movie ends and dialogs about the greatness of good really suck bad, although one conversation -as can be found in the information to the movie (fun stuff)- would be worth sampling. All in all watchable but yet not more impressing then the first 15 minutes.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)
intense and excellent drama...
wow.. what can I say? i stumbled upon this movie accidentally and I must say, I am so glad I did. This movie has everything what a great Drama needs to have. The story is packed with suspension throughout the whole movie, each character gains more and more depth the longer you watch and the tension seems to get unbearable the closer you get to the end. Philip Seymore Hoffman plays the role of his life, he is always more then good, but here he just seems to have found a perfect character for him. The entire cast is amazing, every role is so well written, but Hoffman really points out as a very, very special and fitting impersonation. and played, I am more then happy that I had the chance to see this movie, I haven't even heard of before...
The Deaths of Ian Stone (2007)
oh no, I did not just sit through this...
In the beginning I really thought the idea behind the film was a really something different in its whole plot..,. Unfortunately, that and some of the special effects where the only good things about it. Lets put it like this: the matrix meets the predator meets Alien meets T-1000 meets your average everyday love movie meets hostel meets the saw meets lots of crap.. i don't know why I watched the whole movie, it started off quite interesting but turned pretty boring after about ten minutes which didn't change anymore throughout the movie. I like horror movies, I also like the senseless ones and the gory ones but this one just tries way to hard to be serious or special that it becomes wack... don't waste your time on this, its really not worth it at all.. Gave it 3 stars for the rather "uncommon" idea and some of the effects, as I wrote before...
Botched (2007)
My low expectations weren't satisfied
I really expected more of this movie after reading a couple of reviews, but I must say that I was really disappointed. What a waste of time.. yeah, there is gore, blood, intestines and so on (which I like) but this movie is all in all more or less pretty crappy... Not that I expected it to be "deep" in any way, but this movie, as a low level entertainment, bored me quite fast. I started skipping to the gory parts after I've seen half of the movie, and even these couldn't make up for waiting.
3 stars for the gore, everything else more or less sucks... Thought at least Stephen Dorff would be good, cause I like him (sometimes) but nothing positive to say here neither...
Its not funny enough for a stupid movie and its not violent enough for a gore movie.
