Enjoyable but slightly disjointed
1 January 2024
I enjoyed this but it didn't flow. It's hard to say why. In parts it felt like a BBC kids tv show - the sort where they have a ripping adventure. Things happened with little preamble and a lot of jaunty music, then we were off to the next thing. The conversations often seemed brief and slightly stilted, as if the actors were simply conveying information. I think that was down to the script rather than the acting. "I hate you, mother. You don't know what it's like to be me." "When you were six, you had meningitis and I would have done anything to change places with you." "Righty-ho, mother. I don't hate you so much now. Cheerio." I'm exaggerating, of course, although it's not too far off the mark. However, the premise was good and there were some genuinely funny moments. I'd sum it up as entertaining but a little awkward.

Fabulously cheesy
2 December 2021
The Scottish accents were dire, the plot predictable, some of the acting wooden and Hamish the dog could have written a better script. Yet the old eyes filled at one bit and I laughed a few times. Total cheese, wonderful nonsense and perfect for Christmas.

Quirky and different

This is Victorian London with a modern twist and I like it. Plays on all the supernatural guff that so obsessed the Victorians and gives a nod to Sherlock-style mysteries. Don't expect a period drama and don't expect a detective story. It's a bunch of people investigating supernatural shenanigans. Suspend disbelief and just enjoy it for what it is.

Charming

This warm, charming story of the changing lives and coming together of people from different walks of life meanders along beautifully. No big drama, no action. Just a wonderfully written patchwork of a tale.

Formulaic

Tough good guy. Precocious kid. Baddies after the nuclear stuff. Kid's mum doesn't like tough good guy then she likes tough good guy then she doesn't like tough good guy but needs him to rescue precocious kid from baddies. Formulaic and not funny. This is what happens if you give enough monkeys enough typewriters.
